Chapter 3: Chapter 3: It will be over before you know it

The three summons struck in unison without a second of hesitation but the corrosive black fog immediately spread out to consume them.

They dispersed into harmless black particles and retreated safely into Night’s soul before the fog could even touch them.

Night was deeply touched that his new friends would attack the terrifying man without any regard for their own safety but his instincts screamed that the black fog would permanently kill them.

He would rather die than let someone hurt his friends.

Plus his knowledge from the web novels he read in his past life warned him that destiny usually used situations exactly like this for stupid tragic character development that neither the hero nor the readers actually asked for.

"Cunning little thing, are you not?" the man declared with a cruel grin. "My Wind of Desolation would have permanently killed your summons."

I knew it, Night thought with profound annoyance. Someone or something was clearly trying to force a tragic backstory on him and he absolutely refused to participate.

"Well you don’t seem fazed in the slightest," the man continued. "I am guessing it has to do with the experiments since they have clearly broken your mind but also made you more formidable."

"It doesn’t matter because the real mystery is how they managed to stop you from being integrated into the System for seven years."

Night of course just stared at him politely while dangling in the air.

Though he was internally going absolutely nuts over this massive revelation.

There is a System in this world too? How in the world did those weak lab coat guys manage to block something like a System?

Or maybe they weren’t weak at all..

It seems i am the weak only one here.

Night thought in frustration

The porcelain man laughed with a dry rattling sound. "Well, good for me. This vessel is done for anyway. Since the System came seven years ago it’s become impossible to simply steal a new body. The only way left for me is to make one from scratch but unfortunately I don’t have the time to gather the materials to create a new construct yet."

Night couldn’t help the panicked rhythm drumming against his ribs even though he knew a classic villain monologue like this was coming.

"I wasn’t expecting much from the Witch when I contacted her," the man continued as his voice echoed through the ruined hall. "After receiving a tip from her at a ridiculous price I decided to look into the Leader’s organization."

"And lo and behold what the Leader has been doing in hiding! I don’t think just a blessing from a god can allow a mortal to block the System. It is truly intriguing but I am afraid I will have to curb my curiosity. As they say, curiosity killed the cat, didn’t it?"

Night started struggling because he absolutely refused to go down without a fight.

His own abyssal black fog started flowing out of his small body like a rising tide while his bright blue eyes shifted to glow with a piercing purple light.

All of that terrifying energy instantly dispersed as the Ghost tightened the grip on his neck and almost snapped it.

"argh"

he almost died

"Now, now, don’t be scared because I will be quick and you will have a good sleepy time soon," the Ghost cooed mockingly. "You haven’t awakened your Aspect yet, have you? I can feel it... this dark energy is like an Aspect but it comes directly from your soul."

"You are just an ordinary mortal just like we were before the Dark Age before everything went to shit and the idiots started tossing bombs at each other like they were playing catch..."

The man actually cringed as if the memory of humanity playing catch with nuclear bombs was physically painful. He stepped fully out into the hallway while looming over the dangling boy.

"Let’s first clear the space, shall we?"

The Ghost released his corrosive black fog but it didn’t just drift this time. It exploded. The fog covered the boy in a cold suffocating blanket before surging outward in a powerful violent wave.

BOOM.

The massive shockwave completely obliterated the underground facility and turned the reinforced steel walls to absolute ruin in a single instant.

Night was genuinely shocked by the sheer scale of the display.

The man looked down at Night and smiled with a stretched cracked face that was the scariest thing the boy had ever seen. "It will be over before you know it."

The boy was completely paralyzed and couldn’t even scream as he watched the man raise his right hand. The cracked hand was coated in a dense layer of black fog and Night’s vision instantly went completely dark as it descended toward his face.

Night suddenly found himself floating inside his own Soul Space. He looked around and saw his terrifying Nightmare Domain but for some strange reason it looked incredibly small like a tiny dark egg floating in the void.

The middle-aged man suddenly manifested inside the space. He didn’t look broken here in the spiritual realm since the cracks in his skin were now glowing with a sick pulsing purple light. He noticed Night floating nearby and then glanced at the egg-sized Domain but he was clearly unimpressed.

He looked at the boy who currently appeared as nothing more than a glowing jade-white smudge of a soul in the darkness and began to pace around him. The Ghost looked exactly like an arrogant teacher who was really proud of a very evil lesson plan. freeweɓnøvel.com

"You see, little Project," the man said as his purple eyes gleamed in the dark. "In my most recent adventure to Antarctica...in the deepest and coldest part of the Death Zone I happened upon an absolute miracle. A divine skill."

He looked so excited that he appeared ready to pop like a balloon.

"According to the norm it is entirely impossible to acquire a divine technique or skill before transcending the mortal stages. A normal human soul is like a tiny teacup so if you try to pour the raw power of the world’s laws into it the teacup simply shatters into a billion pieces because the burden is too heavy. But this opportunity? This completely disregarded the norm."

He lifted his hand and opened his palm to reveal a small dusty ancient grey rune floating there like the color of a rainy sky.
