Chapter 27: Chapter 27: lucy is hungry

Lucy’s shadows quickly swallowed the second wolf whole. Without missing a beat she and Night coordinated to attack the third wolf, the one still desperately howling while being grappled by Death.

Lucy’s shadows shot across the ground wrapping tightly around the beast’s legs and binding it completely. Immobilized, the wolf could only watch in terror as Night’s sharp blade arced downward, finishing it off with a clean lethal slash.

Quickly letting the shadows devour the fresh corpse, Night dashed forward to escape being swarmed by the rapidly approaching pack.

His [Beast Instinct] was blaring, screaming at him to get the hell away from the area.

Night quickly did the mental math.

We have already sent six wolves to reincarnation from this pack.

That means there should be at least eleven more left and that’s not counting any other wolves joining them from deeper in the dungeon.

We can’t handle that many at once without using Sara’s red talisman.

Furthermore who knows how many more are actually lurking in here?

Night ran as fast as his little legs could carry him but his physical speed was truly pathetic. If this went on, he would surely become food for the wolves and fertilizer for the soil of this nameless dungeon.

Seeing him struggle Death was about to summon herself and scoop him up into a princess carry like before. But before her skeletal hands could reach him, the shadow beneath Night surged.

Lucy erupted from the darkness having enlarged herself to the size of a heavy motorcycle. She smoothly caught Night on her back and bolted down the tunnel. freewebnovel.cσ๓

Gritting her teethor rather, grinding her jawbone; Death had to bitterly admit that the gluttonous wolf’s speed was far superior to hers.

Besides Night was in real danger, the priority was to keep him whatever means necessary.

Lucy bounded gracefully across the jagged rocks. Whenever she darted through the cavern’s shadows her speed magically increased, blurring her silhouette.

Night glanced over his shoulder and his soul almost left his body. There weren’t just eleven wolves behind them. There were ten... no, twenty... twenty-five wolves furiously chasing them down the cavern.

And leading the pack was a massive heavily scarred beast, significantly larger than all the others at the front.

"That is most likely a Level 5 Alpha," Lucy’s teenage voice echoed urgently in his mind. "It should be a level higher than us."

Night still didn’t know how to communicate telepathically like her so he shouted over the rushing wind, "Didn’t you easily kill that Level 10 human yesterday?!"

"Humans mostly have much weaker physical bodies!" Lucy replied mentally. "This wolf is Level 5! In a head-on clash, its sheer physical stats make it a much more difficult opponent!"

Night’s mind raced. Then, an idea sparked. "Let’s go back to the starting cave where we entered the dungeon!"

Lucy sounded puzzled. "Won’t we just be dooming ourselves by backing into a dead end with nowhere to run?"

"Yes, but the biggest threat they have against us right now is their sheer numbers!" Night yelled back. "Inside that small starting cave, they can’t surround us. It will force a tight, frontal clash! Plus, if it gets too dangerous, we will use our trump card Sara gave us to wipe them all out!"

"But—"

"We don’t know exactly how the talisman works!" Night explained frantically. "What if it’s an explosive AoE spell and we fail to hit the main targets in an open field? In an enclosed cave, they have nowhere to dodge!"

Convinced by his logic, Lucy abruptly banked hard changing their trajectory back toward their entrance point.

As the seconds ticked by as the ravenous pack slowly closed the distance. The Alpha, in particular was fueled by absolute fury as it chased them with a terrifying, bloodthirsty passion.

Soon, they reached the familiar narrow entrance of the starting cave and dashed inside.

The Alpha slowed down slightly as it was little distance away from the pack because of its speed it stopped just near the entrance in a cunning attempt to block the only exit.

It clearly knew the cave ahead was a dead end.

From inside the safety of the narrow cavern, Night watched the massive Alpha stop just outside the threshold. It stared at them menacingly with its yellow eyes glowing in the dark.

It seemed a little wary of Lucy’s with her dark shadowy aura completely ignoring the tiny human clinging to her back.

It must have assumed Lucy was the enemy who killed its packmates and that Night was merely her backup emergency snack in case she ran out of actual food.

When four of its fastest lackeys finally caught up and flanked it, the Alpha let out a deafening growl and charged blindly into the cave.

Since this was going to be a perilous battle, Lucy and Night had already quickly finalized their tactical formation during the retreat.

The moment the wolves crossed the threshold, Lucy dissolved smoothly back into Night’s shadow. In her place, Death erupted from a swirling black portal right at the front line, stepping up to directly engage the massive Alpha.

As for the four smaller wolves trailing behind it, the instant they entered the cave, Lucy’s shadows violently spiked upward from the floor, firmly binding all of their legs.

The Alpha was caught completely off guard by Death manifesting out of nowhere, as well as the weird shadow trap that hindered its pack. Because of the sudden confusion, it failed to clash with Death at its full momentum, allowing her to engage it without being immediately overwhelmed.

Even so, the Alpha’s heavy paws slammed into Death’s crossed arms. Her bones rattled violently, and tiny hairline cracks formed along her forearms. It was a stark reminder of how physically outmatched she was; in a battle of pure attrition, this was a losing fight.

Despite this, Death showed absolutely no hesitation. Instead of trying to match its raw strength, she flowed with the impact, relying on her superior combat skills and innate grace to parry and redirect the beast’s brutal strikes.

While the powerful Alpha was too strong to be immobilized by the shadows, the other four wolves were successfully pinned in place by Lucy.

However, the trick had reached its absolute limit.

Facing the frantic struggles of four Level 4 beasts, Lucy’s shadow bindings were straining. It looked like they wouldn’t be able to hold for more than two seconds.

But two seconds was more than enough.

The very instant Lucy’s shadows locked them down, Eve materialized. She slammed her pale palms into the damp cavern floor, releasing a massive crackling burst of blue electricity. The shockwave instantly stunned the four smaller wolves.

The Alpha, with its higher resistance powered through the stun, but the fierce electrical current still managed to slow its movements significantly. That crucial debuff was just enough to help Death bring their duel to equal footing.

Lilith stepped out of another dark swirling portal right in front of one of the stunned wolves. Without an ounce of mercy, she brutally targeted its eyes. Her metallic fingers, which now looked unnervingly human, pierced straight through its sockets.

She released a surge of corrosive dark mana, instantly turning its weak brain into mush and efficiently killing it in a single strike.

Night hadn’t been standing idly by, either. As soon as Death had engaged the Alpha, he had calmed his heartbeat and breath, slipping perfectly into his meditative stealth to wait for Eve’s surprise attack.

The original plan had been to use Eve’s stun to execute the big guy. But seeing that the Alpha had resisted the total paralysis Night fluidly adapted and switched his target to the closest stunned lackey.

Channeling his Energy (EV), he activated [Over-Sharpen]. His simple black knife hummed as it sharpened beyond limits, he cleanly beheaded the paralyzed beast in one smooth motion.

Just as he was about to pivot and rush toward the next target, a sudden explosive rush of euphoric energy flooded his entire being making him feel absolutely blissful.

He immediately knew what had happened.

This time the evolutionary leap wasn’t just limited to him. Because of their profound soul bond, his summons also experienced the torrential rush of leveling energy drastically increasing their overall strength.

Death felt the micro-fractures on her arms heal instantly. Her bones compressed even further, becoming astonishingly dense and durable. Her towering height rapidly reduced to a highly agile, combat-optimal six feet.

Eve and Lilith felt their remaining blocky, metallic structures shed away. Their armor smoothed out to look sleek with a dark highly advanced synthetic plating. They now looked almost entirely humanoid like futuristic Androids.

As for Lucy, she felt her innate control over the shadows become vastly more refined and powerful. But along with the upgrade came one more side-effect...

a rather annoying one...
