Chapter 127: Soul Sanctuary

"What’s life essence?" Leon asked. It was the first time he had ever heard the term.

"Master, life essence is the foundation of a living being’s vitality and lifespan," Noira explained. "By cultivating your life essence, you can increase your vitality, remain vigorous, and even retain a youthful appearance for longer. On the other hand, if your life essence is damaged or begins to deteriorate, your vitality will decline, and you’ll age much faster."

She paused briefly before continuing.

"Burning life essence literally means burning away your own lifespan. The more you burn, the shorter your life becomes. In return, however, you gain a tremendous boost in power."

Hearing her explanation, Leon was completely dumbfounded. A complicated expression slowly spread across his face.

"You mean... he was burning through his own life?" Leon looked at Frenrir in disbelief. "You could’ve died, man. Why would you do something like that?"

"Master... it was necessary." That was all Frenrir said after a long silence. ’If I say anything more, it will be difficult not to explain everything.’

Leon stared at Frenrir for a while. ’He’s definitely hiding a lot of things. But whatever.

I believe he has good intentions. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have risked his own life to save mine... or everyone else’s.’

"So, now that I’ve formed a bond with you two, are you guys going to stick with me?" Leon asked. ’Both of them are incredibly strong. They’re at least as powerful as Mr. Cooper. Having them by my side will definitely be a huge advantage,’ he thought.

"Yes, Master," Frenrir and Noira answered in unison.

"Now that we’ve formed a bond," Noira added, "we can reside within your Soul Sanctuary."

"Soul Sanctuary?" Leon looked puzzled.

"It’s a space that exists within your soul, Master," Noira explained. "Once you form a bond with a beast, a bonded beast can reside there."

"Reside there? Why does it sound like you are going to live inside me?"

Leon’s expression immediately turned strange. ’That... doesn’t sound like a good idea, does it? What happens when I need to use the bathroom or do something that shouldn’t be seen by others.’

Looking at Leon’s troubled expression, Noira covered her mouth and giggled, as though she already knew what he was thinking.

"Relax, Master. The Soul Sanctuary is protected by your soul. You decide when we can use our spirit sense to observe the outside world and when we can’t."

Leon’s shoulders relaxed slightly. "That’s good."

He nodded. "Let’s get going."

With that, Leon started walking away. Frenrir and Noira exchanged a glance before their bodies dissolved into streams of light and disappeared into Leon’s Soul Sanctuary.

Meanwhile, Stanley, Jasper, Archie, and Oliver gathered together.

"That demon thing..." Jasper was the first to speak. "Who would’ve thought something like that was sealed inside the Delvan Tower?"

Archie nodded thoughtfully. "Yeah. Although we didn’t get the chance to ask Leon what exactly happened inside the tower, it definitely had something to do with that female assassin."

"Is she dead?" Oliver asked.

"I think so. Otherwise, Leon couldn’t have come out without her. She wouldn’t let him."

Archie turned toward Stanley. "Mr. Cooper, shouldn’t you have asked Leon about everything before letting him leave?"

"I should have," Stanley admitted. "But now isn’t the right time." His expression turned serious. "I don’t want anyone else finding out what happened here."

He glanced at the shattered gate of the Delvan Tower. "The gate has been destroyed. It’ll attract plenty of attention soon enough. And then there’s the demon. If word gets out that something like that exists, it’ll create widespread panic."

He looked in the direction Leon had left. "But more importantly... I don’t want anyone to know about Leon. About what he is capable of. At least not until he completes the six-month military training camp after he’s selected."

"You all know why."

Oliver frowned. "Why does he even have to attend the military training camp in the first place?"

"Because..." Stanley answered calmly, "he’s like those people from Summitas Valley. A cultivator. And, the mana meter couldn’t measure his strength."

Silence fell over the group. Jasper was the first to break it. "But I thought he was from Delvan. He goes to college here. And his sister is a regular student at the same college my younger brother attends."

He looked at Stanley in confusion. "Are you sure he’s really one of them?"

Very few people knew about cultivators. However, as three of the only seven S-Class hunters in Delvan, Jasper, Oliver, and Archie were among the few who knew exactly what the term meant.

"He’s definitely a cultivator. There’s no doubt about that." Stanley spoke with certainty. "As for whether he’s really from Summitas Valley... I’m not sure yet."

He paused briefly. "We’ll have to wait and see."

Then his expression turned serious as he looked at the three guild masters. "For now, don’t mention Leon to anyone. Make sure the guild members you brought with you keep their mouths shut as well."

"Yes, Mr. Cooper," the three of them replied in unison.

Meanwhile, Jessica was waiting outside the battlefield. She hadn’t left the area. Although she had moved away from the Delvan Tower, she had remained nearby in case her grandfather needed her help.

As time passed, she grew increasingly anxious.

Then she noticed someone walking toward her. As the figure drew closer, she finally recognized him.

She hurried over immediately.

"You... You’re still alive?"

Leon raised an eyebrow. "Huh? Were you expecting me not to be?"

"N-No, that’s not what I meant." Jessica replied awkwardly. "Where’s my grandfather? Is he alright?"

"He is."

Leon nodded. "He’ll be back soon."

Silence followed. Jessica wanted to ask what had happened inside the tower, but the words refused to come out.

After a few moments, Leon broke the silence.

"Well then, President. If there’s nothing else... I’ll be taking my leave."

Jessica nodded.

With that, Leon turned around and started walking away.

Jessica stared at his retreating figure. Soon Stanley and others also came out.
