Chapter 767: Chapter 725: Lost in a Maze
The closer they got to the battlefield, the more serious the obstruction became. The streets were filled with swirling smoke and dust, and with each movement of the alien species, debris and building rubble rolled like the rising and falling of tides.
Zheng Xian could no longer speak, and he had to hold his breath. Opening his mouth would only lead to a mouthful of sand.
However, Su Ming’s movements were unhindered. Listening to the sound of debris scraping against the armor, he flew close to the ground like an arrow.
Zheng Xian tightly held onto the corner of his cloak, yet felt as if the cloak was holding him instead. It was a strange feeling.
But this wasn’t the strangest part. During the flight, he noticed Deathstroke humming a bizarre tune in a hoarse voice.
"... Broken, let it be broken, why care for perfection? Letting go of myself, I can soar high..."
Zheng Xian found it inexplicable. The two of them were nearly skimming the ground—how could this be called soaring high?
Actually, Su Ming suddenly found the alien species’ movement somewhat familiar. It reminded him of snuffing out a cigarette when it stomped on the Holy Shield soldiers. This brought the song to mind instinctively.
Perhaps too many had been trampled to death and were sticking uncomfortably to its feet. The Celestial Divine Species often rubbed its foot on the ground.
This was the reason Su Ming chose to enter its body through the heel.
The Celestial God had no neck. Its head connected directly to its torso, like a bucket on a round platform. Without bending over, it couldn’t see its own heel.
Here was a blind spot, and when it lifted one foot to step on soldiers, the other foot had to remain on the ground. This gave Su Ming an opportunity to drill into the heel of the supporting leg with his weapon.
To be honest, he preferred dealing with large-sized enemies, as it often meant there weren’t many targeted methods within their bodies.
Of course, the prerequisite was having a weapon that could pierce the enemy’s skin, or finding a way into its mouth.
Gods have no mouths, and the exterior metal was seamless, so one had to dig in.
Su Ming wasn’t sure if the Nightfall Greatsword could cut through the enemy’s outer shell, but even if it couldn’t, wasn’t there still the Holy Spear?
"Boom!!!"
"Clang!!!"
"Ah!!!"
Explosions, the sound of buildings collapsing, screams of soldiers—all these sounds mixed together, truly giving a sense of a World War. They took the opportunity to stealthily move in the dust, and the process was smooth, as the alien species’ gaze was only held by the way ahead.
Su Ming looked at Newton from a distance. Even the Supreme Councilor was visibly troubled. His subordinates couldn’t possibly stand up to the Celestial Gods.
Even if Newton tirelessly emitted energy beams with his staff, he couldn’t leave even the slightest mark on the Celestial God’s body.
"Old Zheng, are you ready? We don’t know what’s inside the Celestial God, so be careful." Su Ming and Zheng Xian quietly floated beneath the Celestial God’s feet. He flipped the sword hand and twirled a sword flower, and the Great Sword made a whistling sound like the starry sky.
Though Zheng Xian was still smiling, his mouth was tightly pursed, giving no hint of speaking, just nodding. freewebnσvel.cøm
Unhesitant, Su Ming gripped the Great Sword with both hands and delivered a thrust at the Celestial God’s heel.
Sparks flew as the metal screeched with a teeth-grinding noise. The Great Sword felt a slight resistance before penetrating down to the hilt.
The Celestial God swayed slightly, as though perceiving something, and while it hadn’t yet bent over, Su Ming pulled the Great Sword forcefully, carving out a circular hole in the heel.
A large, cone-shaped piece of metal was pried out by him.
Unfortunately, the alien species’ skin was too thick. This sword didn’t create a path, merely gouging out a piece of skin.
However, it was enough. Su Ming quickly picked up Zheng Xian, and the two hid in the cone-shaped hole.
Three massive light balls, like suns, scanned beneath without spotting anything unusual, only noticing a small piece of the skin had fallen off.
It could understand very little, perhaps not knowing what it meant, or knowing yet not heeding, as its combat power wasn’t affected, and calculations were unchanged.
So it raised its arms and slapped down, reducing a large area of buildings on the ground to powder, before continuing its play of trampling people.
Su Ming and Zheng Xian experienced some tremors when it struck the ground, but it was just a small annoyance.
Now it just needed to penetrate the skin layer and enter the interior. Who knows, perhaps it would be like an old steam engine, full of pipes and gears?
Su Ming continued to dig inward with the Great Sword, while Zheng Xian was responsible for tossing the extracted metal out. Su Ming kept a sharp eye, pocketing a piece of metal intending to study it later.
The materials used to create the Celestial Gods Group should be decent, at least not melted under the sun, showing it had high-temperature resistance.
"Click, click, click..."
The Nightfall Greatsword plunged into the metal time and again, as their position grew deeper and darkness enveloped them, yet the X Metal glowed ever brighter on the Great Sword.
"Pft."
This time, when the Great Sword fell, the sound it produced differed, and the feeling in hand became lighter.
"It’s pierced through, be prepared." Seeing the strands of red light emerging from the edge of the sword, Su Ming reminded Zheng Xian.
"Rest assured, brother, I’ve got it." Zheng Xian tossed a piece of metal behind him and readied his weapon.
"Go!"
The Great Sword spun abruptly, drawing a perfect circle. Su Ming’s empty hand suddenly punched, knocking away the plug, and red light shone brightly before his eyes.
............
"Damn it, where are we?"
As the red light dissipated, Su Ming and Zheng Xian found themselves not in some narrow steampunk chamber, but in a mysterious rainforest.
Su Ming immediately looked behind him, but apart from the dense forest shadows, there was no sign of the path they had entered from.
The helmet withdrew from his face. Strangulation had confirmed the safety of the area and detected nothing harmful to the host, aside from the scent of rotting leaves in the rainforest.
As Zheng Xian exclaimed in wonder, Su Ming didn’t rush to answer his question but began inspecting the surroundings instead.
The sun overhead and the soil underfoot made it clear that this was indeed Earth.
Temperature, humidity, the surrounding trees, flowers, and grasses all indicated a location not far from the Equator, perhaps somewhere in South America or Africa.
Su Ming examined these surroundings, and a small lizard ran past in the distance, seemingly unafraid of the two of them. It paused to watch for a while before darting away.
"We’ve encountered a ghost wall." Su Ming joked to Zheng Xian, taking out cigarettes and offering one to each. Everything around them was either real or fake enough that even Su Ming couldn’t discern it.
However, such deception would need to fool Deathstroke, Strangulation, and the cloak all at once, which was simply unrealistic.
No matter where this was, leaving a mark at their current location and then finding a landmark to confirm their position would lead them to the answer.
Zheng Xian accepted the cigarette and took out a lighter to ignite them both. He took a deep drag and exhaled a cloud of thick smoke.
"I know you’re good at breaking through, but I didn’t expect you to come from a lineage of local scholars... We’re not tomb robbers, so why have we hit a ghost wall?"
Su Ming chuckled lightly, holding the cigarette in his mouth and tilting his head back to gaze at the sky through the gaps between the leaves.
"Because I don’t know how this came to be either, so I’m just saying whatever comes to mind."
"Could this be a pocket space or a sub-dimensional area?" Zheng Xian proposed his insight, having watched Deathstroke’s check of the surroundings and conceding that this place had many similarities to Earth.
"Wait a moment." Su Ming jumped in place, the cloak rapidly helping him to ascend, breaking free from the planet’s gravity and entering space.
Planet numbers, star mass, familiar continent plates—all correct. Except now Earth was densely covered by vegetation, transformed into a blue and green sphere.
Su Ming smacked his lips and returned beside Zheng Xian. On his adventure, Director Zheng had somehow scavenged a bunch of bananas from a tree and was eating them.
"Two pieces of news, one good and one bad. Which do you want first?" Su Ming sat beside him, casually plunging Nightfall Greatsword into the ground.
Zheng Xian handed him some food and invited him to try it: "I personally prefer hearing the bad news first, and then the ray of hope."
"This is Earth’s future, or to say, one possible future on a certain timeline—the future where humanity perished, and the world plunged into a green apocalypse. We’re in Central Africa."
Su Ming accepted the banana, took a bite without care; it tasted extremely bitter, reminiscent of coffee.
"And the good news?" Zheng Xian nodded, still smiling, seemingly unperturbed. But from the fleeting expression in his eyes, he might have wavered for a moment.
"The good news is that while flying, I saw a city ruin not far from here. Perhaps there we can gather more information."
Su Ming sheathed the Great Sword, stuffing the banana in his mouth, and stood up.
If lost in the wild, embarking on exploration while the physical condition is still good, increases the likelihood of survival.
Zheng Xian used the Holy Spear as a cane to support himself, holding a bunch of bananas in his other hand: "Let’s go have a look then."
Su Ming detached the cloak, and the two sat on it, moving towards the direction Su Ming had seen earlier.
The ruins of a future city, various plants had completely overtaken it, vines wrapped skyscrapers like Christmas presents. This orderly arrangement allowed Su Ming to recognize what they originally were.
As for the roads or other infrastructure, they had been completely consumed by the rainforest, perhaps lying beneath the feet of the two men.
The duo landed in the city center, where what appeared to be a square was now merely a small patch of green clearing.
"Nature’s power is truly terrifying." Zheng Xian sighed.
Perhaps their flight through the city had caused some commotion, and one of the buildings they passed collapsed suddenly. The vines had corroded the cement constituting the building into a brittle state, resembling a peach crisp.
"Time had its hand in this too; we haven’t seen a single skeleton." Su Ming added, while Zheng Xian only responded with a bitter smile, not saying anything further.
The two began clearing obstacles with their weapons. The small grove before them formed an unusually neat circle, suggesting this used to be a fountain or a monument, affirming the city’s name.
Once the city was identified, Su Ming could borrow intelligence from the comics a bit, make bold assumptions, and thus uncover the truth.
Bushes and vines fell and broke away continuously. The duo gradually moved towards the center of the greenery, where under thick humus, something seemed to faintly protrude.
The Godslayer turned into a shovel, and Su Ming strode over to begin digging. As more was uncovered, he realized where they were.
Zheng Xian showed a thoughtful expression, forcefully plunged the Holy Spear into the ground beside him, and rubbed his chin: "It’s a statue, a cat?"
"A feline." Su Ming sheathed Godslayer, helplessly patting the inscription on the statue’s base. Below the stinking humus, the familiar string of words read: "Wakanda, the Panther loves me."
