Chapter 289: Unknown

After a week, they finally found a good rhythm in taking care of Azura together. Her fathers took turns staying by her side in the pond because she still could not fully breathe on land yet.

At night, Roxanna would place Azura inside the Cradle of Tides so they could watch over her more easily while making sure she could still breathe safely through the night.

"It feels like something is wrong," Roxanna said quietly while feeding Azura in the pond.

Beside her, Azul gently stroked their daughter’s tiny head. "Honestly, I don’t really understand this either. Deep down, I feel like I wasn’t born like Azura, but at the same time, I can’t trust my fish memories."

There were still too many things missing from his memories, and that empty gap still remained. For a moment, the two of them fell silent, lost in their own thoughts.

But then the silence broke when Azura suddenly choked.

"Cough... cough..."

Roxanna quickly pulled her daughter away from her chest and gently patted her back.

"This is why Mommy told you not to drink too fast," she said softly. "Now you’re choking."

She kept rubbing and patting Azura’s back, hoping the milk blocking her throat would come out.

Azura did spit some of it out, but the coughing did not stop. Instead, it became worse. Her tiny face slowly turned red.

"Azul, I think something’s wrong!" Roxanna cried out in panic. "S-She looks like she can’t breathe!"

In desperation, Roxanna lowered Azura deeper into the water, hoping it would help her breathe again. But instead, Azura only struggled even harder.

Roxanna’s heart instantly dropped because she truly did not understand what was happening to her daughter.

"She might need flowing water," Azul suddenly said.

Without wasting another second, he carefully took Azura from Roxanna’s arms and ran toward the river outside the settlement.

He immediately jumped into the river while holding Azura close to his chest. Even the crocodiles nearby looked restless, as if they were worried about her too.

Meanwhile, Roxanna ran behind them and stopped right at the riverbank.

"How is she?!" she shouted loudly, trying to reach Azul’s ears while he was underwater.

She waited anxiously above the surface, her entire body trembling with fear. She was terrified that her daughter might stop breathing completely.

Then after a moment, Azul finally broke through the surface. He wiped his face before saying, "She’s fine now."

Both of them instantly let out relieved breaths, especially Azul.

"It took her a little while, but she can breathe again now," he explained. "I think she really needs to stay in flowing water."

Roxanna carefully reached for Azura, who was curled up weakly in her father’s arms. Her tiny hands tightly clung to Azul’s clothes, showing that even the little baby herself had been frightened.

"You’re okay now, little one," Roxanna whispered softly.

She gently stroked Azura’s head, her eyes turning watery when she heard her daughter’s soft sobs. "Don’t be scared... Mommy and Daddy will always protect you."

Azul looked at both of them before quietly saying, "I think we should let her stay here until she can fully breathe on land." Then he softened his voice even more. "I’ll take care of her her. Don’t worry."

Roxanna still was not fully sure about that arrangement, but since she did not have many choices, she agreed to it.

She also told her other husbands to take turns watching over Azul at the river.

Luckily, none of them protested, and they truly took care of Azul and Azura as if they were precious diamonds.

Because of that, Roxanna hoped Azura would slowly get better. But even after days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into a month, Azura still did not improve.

She was able to breathe, yes. But her body gradually became weaker and weaker. Her skin turned pale, and it became very difficult to get her to drink milk.

Every day, Roxanna’s heart grew heavier.

Azura rarely cried anymore, but somehow, that only made Roxanna feel even more afraid. The baby spent most of her time quietly resting in Azul’s arms while floating in the flowing river water. Sometimes, her tiny eyes would slowly open, only to close again a few moments later as if she did not even have the strength to stay awake.

"She drank even less today," Roxanna whispered softly one evening.

Her voice sounded tired. Azul lowered his gaze toward their daughter, whose small body was carefully wrapped in a soft animal-fur cloth to keep her warm. Even in the water, Azura still looked weak and fragile.

"There has to be something we’re missing," Azul muttered.

"Should we ask Aelin to come back here again?" Calen asked while standing guard nearby. "Maybe she knows what’s wrong with our daughter."

Luan slowly shook his head. "Aquatic beastkins are different from beastkins who live on land," he said calmly. "Our bodies and instincts probably work differently too."

Because of that, there was a chance that Aelin would not fully understand what was happening to their daughter.

"We need to find aquatic doctors to examine her," Azul said in a low voice. "Maybe people in the ocean."

He then looked toward Roxanna. "Wife, I think it’s about time."

Roxanna immediately understood what he meant.

Back then, she had promised him that once their daughter was born, she would go to the ocean with him.

Honestly, Azul never wanted to bring up that promise this soon. At first, he only wanted to stay beside their daughter and focus on taking care of her.

But now, things had changed because their daughter needed the ocean too, and because of that, he could no longer avoid it.

"Why does it have to be the ocean?" Calen suddenly asked. "What about the beastkins who live in rivers? Besides, aren’t you a betta fish?"

Azul slowly raised an eyebrow and looked at Calen seriously. "We’re already in a river right now," he said calmly. "And yet... her condition still isn’t getting better."

His gaze slowly lowered toward Azura again. "That’s why I think we should go to the ocean instead." After a brief pause, he added softly, "Besides... I’m not even fully sure that I’m really a betta fish."

Once again, those broken fish memories made him doubt himself. Afrer all, there were simply too many missing pieces.

"Then we’ll need to bring her using the cradle," she said softly. "But... I think it’ll be safer if we travel along places where we can easily find rivers during the journey."

Even though the cradle given by the system guaranteed that her baby would be safe inside it, Roxanna still did not want to take any risks.

After all, Azura’s condition was far too fragile now.

If something happened to her during the journey, Roxanna did not think she would ever be able to forgive herself.

Azul seemed to understand her worries immediately. "We’ll stop near water whenever we need to," he said gently. "I won’t let anything happen to her."

Roxanna slowly nodded, but the anxiety inside her chest still refused to disappear.

The ocean was far away, and no one truly knew what would be waiting for them there.

[Side Mission Activated: See the Ocean!]

[Goal: Escort Baby Azura safely to the ocean.]

[Reward: Unknown.]

The system notification suddenly echoed inside Roxanna’s head.

Her entire body froze for a second.

[Unknown?] she repeated inwardly.

That had never happened before.

Usually, the system would clearly list the rewards she would receive after completing a mission. But this time, the reward section remained completely blank.

As if even the system itself could not predict what would happen next. A strange feeling instantly crept into Roxanna’s chest.

"Roxanna?" Azul called softly after noticing her expression. "What’s wrong?"

She quickly forced herself to calm down before shaking her head lightly.

"Nothing," she murmured. "The voice inside my head just said that I’ll get some rewards if I can bring Azura to the ocean."

None of them looked too surprised after hearing that. After all, they were already used to Roxanna occasionally hearing strange voices from her mysterious power.

Calen immediately grinned brightly. "Then that means even the heavens want us to go there!"

Meanwhile, Azul narrowed his eyes slightly. "Did the voice say anything else?"

Roxanna hesitated for a brief moment before quietly answering, "No... not really."

[For some reason, I feel uneasy if I tell them about that unknown mark.] Roxanna thought.

Azul actually wanted to know more, but since it seemed like Roxanna herself also did not know much about it, he decided not to ask further.

Instead, Azul shifted his attention back toward Azura. frёewebηovel.cѳm

"Then we need to immediately pack our things and decide... who will go with us to the ocean," Azul said with a quiet sigh. "After all, we can’t leave this settlement completely unguarded."

The moment those words were spoken, Roxanna knew that it would not be an easy decision to make.

"I will go with them!" Calen said loudly as soon as Roxanna explained the situation to her other husbands.
