Chapter 467: Children’s Banter is also Amusing
"Don’t fuss. You sit too." The General’s wife took a seat, her eyes fixed on Xi Fengying, just like the other concubines.
What Xi Fengying had said today convinced her that the woman was dangerous. If she acted impulsively, the General’s Manor would surely be dragged into it.
Xi Fengying gazed at the room full of women, her head already starting to ache.
Before, only two or three of them took turns watching her. Now, it seemed they had all crammed themselves into the room.
’My conditions weren’t met, the fragile friendship I worked so hard to build with the concubines is gone, and on top of it all, I’m being stared down by all these eyes. This is just too much.’
Huaihua and Ye Qianning walked out the door and, from a distance, saw Helian Chen standing with his hands clasped behind his back, craning his neck to peer into the courtyard.
Ye Qianning trotted over. "Why didn’t you come in?"
"It is very rude to enter a lady’s courtyard without the owner’s permission," Helian Chen said solemnly.
"The last time you came into my Yuehua Small Building, I don’t remember anyone announcing you," Ye Qianning teased.
Helian Chen’s little face instantly flushed red. "I... I was lost that time."
"Ohhh, I see."
Hearing the teasing tone in her voice, Helian Chen’s face grew even redder.
"Alright, you should stop teasing him," Huaihua said with a smile, walking over to them.
Ye Qianning leaned against her aunt. "But it’s so much fun."
Huaihua chuckled and shook her head, her gaze falling on the beet-red face of the little boy. "The guqin is ready. Come, I’ll take you both to get it."
"Th-thank you, Sixth Aunt."
Huaihua took Ye Qianning’s hand, then held out her other hand to Helian Chen.
Helian Chen froze for a moment.
"Let’s go." Seeing that he hadn’t moved, Huaihua wiggled her fingers.
Ye Qianning also tilted her head to look at him.
After a brief hesitation, Helian Chen reached out and took Huaihua’s hand, his heart filled with a flutter of joy.
Holding a child in each hand, Huaihua led them toward the room on the left.
Ye Qianning leaned back slightly to look at him. "Why are you so happy?"
"I’m... I’m not," Helian Chen retorted.
Ye Qianning’s eyes widened. "You’re not happy about holding my aunt’s hand?"
"I... I..." Helian Chen’s face flushed crimson as he struggled for words, and he couldn’t help but glare at her.
Huaihua laughed aloud. Watching the children bicker was quite amusing.
Ye Qianning secretly chuckled. She found the little guy more and more adorable. ’If only my Sang Zhi were this lively.’
At the thought of Sang Zhi, she sighed, and her smile gradually faded.
’She hadn’t seen him in half a month. Even though the little honeyeater delivered news from him every day, she couldn’t stop worrying. He’s just too withdrawn.’
’He doesn’t go to Lou Mountain Academy, spending most of his days cooped up in his courtyard reading. He reads in the morning and reads in the afternoon, sitting still for hours on end.’
’If no one looks after him, I’m worried about his mental state as he gets older.’
’The fortune value in her space wasn’t fluctuating much. She could accumulate some by helping others, but it was never a significant amount.’
’Sang Zhi alone was worth more than many people combined. If she wanted to do well for herself, she had to keep a constant watch on that little guy.’
Huaihua led the two children into the room and instructed a maid to bring pastries and milk tea. She then went into the inner chamber to retrieve the finished guqin.
Helian Chen had been thinking about Huaihua’s pastries ever since his last visit. As soon as they were served, he wasted no time in picking one up and popping it into his mouth.
Ye Qianning climbed onto a chair and began nibbling on a pastry as well.
"The food at your home is so delicious, why do you still waste money at Immortal’s Drunkenness?" Helian Chen asked, picking up another pastry.
"I like to switch things up sometimes."
"Your aunts are always making you different things every day. Isn’t that enough?"
Ye Qianning said leisurely, "People get curious, you know."
