Chapter 459: Worth the Trip

"I haven’t even gotten angry, and she’s already throwing a fit," Ye Qianning grumbled, wrinkling her small nose.

Sang Yan looked down at her. "What were you angry about?"

"She booked out the entire Immortal’s Drunkenness, and to top it off, she didn’t even invite anyone from our Beili to her banquet. You tell me, shouldn’t I be angry?" Ye Qianning replied matter-of-factly.

Slightly surprised, Sang Yan led her downstairs.

"Still, today’s trip was worth it. I got to eat my favorite dishes and made a lot of money. Now the General’s Residence won’t have to struggle so much." Ye Qianning couldn’t help but smile at the thought of the two hundred thousand.

"Is the General’s Residence that short on money?" Sang Yan asked.

Ye Qianning thought for a moment. "You could say that. The rewards from the Emperor were all taken by my second uncle to pay off gambling debts, and Grandma took some of the gold and silver jewelry to give to my second aunt’s maiden family."

"I see." Sang Yan already knew a little about the Xiang family’s situation.

Thinking about it now, he realized it made sense. An entire household of over a hundred people relied on Xiang Minghou’s salary and the rewards from his military achievements to get by. Funds were indeed tight.

"Third Prince, I should be heading back now," Ye Qianning said, standing by the carriage.

"You came out by yourself?"

"Mhm, I’ve been cooped up in the residence for days."

"The Capital City has been a bit unsettled lately. Let me take you home." Sang Yan bent down and lifted her into the carriage.

"If you’re busy, Third Prince, you should go. I’ll be fine getting back by myself."

"I did have something, but it’s been taken care of now." Sang Yan gave her a gentle pat, motioning for her to go further into the carriage.

Ye Qianning turned, lifted the carriage curtain, and sat down. Sang Yan followed her in and sat across from her.

"Did they catch the culprits?" she asked, tilting her head.

"No."

"Then why did you say it was taken care of?"

Sang Yan chuckled. "In any case, I have you to thank for today."

"Hm?"

"Heh, you’re still too young to understand. But today, I owe you a favor. If you ever need anything in the future, you can come find me at the Third Prince Mansion." Sang Yan had been ordered to host the envoys from the three kingdoms. He would be held responsible for anything that happened to them in the Capital City.

He had received news today that Princess East Shu was hosting a banquet for the envoys of the other two kingdoms under the guise of a farewell. His father, the Emperor, had sent someone to the Third Prince Mansion first thing in the morning, ordering him to find out exactly what they would be discussing.

He had arrived early and was monitoring the situation from a private room in a building not far from Immortal’s Drunkenness. After the envoys from the two kingdoms arrived, he had been wondering how he might get inside uninvited.

Just then, he saw the Xiang family’s carriage arrive, only for the little girl to be stopped at the entrance of Immortal’s Drunkenness.

He watched for a moment, and when the little girl managed to get in, he knew that even if East Shu had something schemed, they wouldn’t be able to discuss it openly with her present. That was why he hadn’t gone in right away.

"A favor?" Confusion filled Ye Qianning’s eyes.

Sang Yan smiled and reached out, ruffling her hair. "That’s right. What would you like?"

"I don’t want anything. It’s not like I did something," she said, shaking her head demurely.

"Heh. Then why did you suddenly decide to have someone invite me to Immortal’s Drunkenness today?" Sang Yan was genuinely curious.

At this, Ye Qianning’s little face scrunched up again. "They were being bullies."

"Did they bully you?" Sang Yan’s expression tensed.

"No. They were bullying our Beili."

"How so?"

"Princess East Shu said she was hosting a banquet for the two kingdoms to ’strengthen friendly ties.’ But if she’s strengthening friendly ties, why didn’t she invite anyone from Beili? They must be badmouthing us behind our backs, or scheming to set us up." Ye Qianning lowered her voice, her small face a picture of caution.

"How did you realize they were plotting something?"

Sang Yan stared at her. ’Ye Qianning is truly remarkable,’ he thought. ’At such a young age, she knew a gathering of the three kingdoms meant a secret plot was afoot. Her powers of observation are incredible.’
