Chapter 438: They All Look Familiar
Mr. Li watched the large crowd of women approach. He was rather surprised when his eyes landed on the concubines; General Xiang’s concubines were each more beautiful than the last.
When Zhan Yi saw the crowd arrive, his eyes instinctively searched among the concubines for any sign of Xi Fengying. But after scanning the group... nothing!
Qian Fanji’s gaze swept coolly over them, and he too failed to spot Xi Fengying.
’She certainly hasn’t left the manor, and there’s no way she could remain hidden. That means Xi Fengying must be concealed among this group of people.’
He scanned them several times but found nothing out of the ordinary. ’She’s hidden incredibly well,’ he had to admit.
"They just searched two days ago. Why are they back again?" Madam Zhan tugged Ye Qianning over to Zhan Yi’s side.
"Who knows? If they want to search, then let them." Zhan Yi sighed, feigning nonchalance, but inside he was an absolute nervous wreck.
Madam Zhan sighed.
"Mr. Li." Ye Qianning, who knew him somewhat, looked up with a smile.
Mr. Li looked down, smiled, and greeted, "Miss Xiang."
"Are you here to look for the culprit too, Mr. Li?"
"Indeed I am."
"You’re much nicer than the people who came to the manor last time. Where do you want to search, Mr. Li? I’ll take you. I know the General’s Manor best—I could even find a hidden ant for you," Ye Qianning eagerly volunteered.
"Heh heh, very well. Then I shall trouble you, Miss Xiang."
"It’s no trouble, no trouble at all! Catching the culprit is a great service. Maybe the Emperor will even give me a reward."
Mr. Li smiled and nodded.
"Everyone is here," Zhan Yi said to Mr. Li.
Mr. Li acknowledged him and walked toward the group of concubines.
Ye Qianning fell into step beside him.
The Hidden Guards also looked in that direction, their sharp gazes sweeping over every single person.
"Are all of these the manor’s concubines?" Mr. Li asked, looking down.
"Mhm," Ye Qianning nodded.
"With so many concubines, do you recognize them all, Miss Xiang?"
"Of course! I have nine concubines, and every one of them treats me wonderfully. Come on, Mr. Li. This is my Second Concubine, Baixiang; she makes the most delicious eggplant. And this is my Third Concubine, White Spirit; she makes the best roast chicken..." Ye Qianning pulled Mr. Li along, introducing them one by one.
With each concubine they stopped at, Mr. Li would look her up and down.
Zhan Yi followed his gaze. ’Nine concubines?’
’Doesn’t Xiang Minghou have eight concubines? When did he get another one?’
In a flash, it clicked. He looked at the concubines. Although he didn’t know them well, he had seen all eight of them before. ’The one I don’t recognize must be—’
Zhan Yi’s gaze swept over them, trying to find the unfamiliar face. But as he looked, he grew confused. ’None of them look unfamiliar.’
’I seem to have seen them all before, but I distinctly remember there being only eight concubines—!’
’Where did I miss it?’
Qian Fanji’s eye for detail was formidable, yet he had to look closely several times before he could barely spot the inconsistency. ’A disguise this good... even the Beili Emperor wouldn’t necessarily recognize her if he were standing right here.’
’No wonder she was so confident. This doesn’t seem to be any ordinary Disguise Skill.’
"This is my Ninth Concubine, Moli. She doesn’t seem to know how to do anything, and the other concubines always tease her for being silly." After her introduction, Ye Qianning covered her mouth and giggled.
Upon hearing this, the Ninth Concubine, ’Moli,’ shook her head with a dissatisfied sigh and made a small gesture at her.
Ye Qianning stuck her tongue out and made a face at her. "See? You don’t know how to do anything."
"You... I... Didn’t I just make you peach blossom pastries a few days ago? What do you mean I don’t know how to do anything?" Moli protested quietly.
"Those peach blossom pastries only came out right because Fourth Concubine helped!" Ye Qianning pouted, then turned and threw her arms around Peony in a fawning hug. "Fourth Concubine’s peach blossom pastries are the most delicious!"
