Chapter 420: Outside Dogs, Wanting to Bite
The longsword shifted slightly from its path toward his brow. Luo Wen retracted his weapon and landed steadily beside Ye Qianning.
Before the Left General could even catch his breath, two more waves of killing intent assailed him from the left and right. He stumbled back in a panic.
A swift gust of wind passed. The Left General froze, not daring to move an inch.
Two longswords were pressed against his temples, one on each side. The slightest movement would bring him into contact with their cold, sharp tips.
Ying Ge and Ying Yuan’s killing intent was even more intense than Luo Wen’s—a bone-chilling murderousness.
Cold sweat dripped down the Left General’s forehead. "How dare you..."
Just as he was about to speak, a sharp, icy pain shot through his temples, scaring him into silence.
Ye Qianning waved her hand dismissively.
Ying Ge and Ying Yuan retracted their longswords. "Young Miss."
The Left General’s face was ashen, his heart still pounding with fear. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
"How does their killing intent compare to the guards? Does the Left General find them suspicious as well?" She raised a brow, her tone flippant.
The Left General gritted his teeth, utterly unable to find a retort.
"Ruthlessness is a prerequisite for serving in the General’s manor. My family, unlike the Ministry of War, doesn’t raise a bunch of good-for-nothings."
"You little girl! How dare you repeatedly insult an imperial official..."
"Tsk, tsk. So you don’t like being insulted? If you’re that unconvinced, then show some real skill instead of just harping on about this being suspicious and that being suspicious. Oh, that’s right. Didn’t you say our butler fainting was suspicious? That you had to take him in for questioning?" As she spoke, Ye Qianning looked at the soldiers supporting the butler. "Put him down."
The soldiers glanced over instinctively, then silently lowered the butler to the ground.
The Left General was so furious his teeth itched with rage.
Ye Qianning placed two fingers on the butler’s neck and checked his breathing. She then took a small sachet from her waist that held a little case. Opening it, she took out a fine silver needle and pricked the butler’s wrist a few times.
GASP... COUGH COUGH COUGH...
The unconscious butler took a deep breath and jolted awake.
"Grandpa Butler," Ye Qianning said.
The butler coughed a few times and made out the person in front of him. "Young Miss... COUGH COUGH."
"Grandpa Butler, what happened? Why did you faint in your room?"
"COUGH COUGH... My chest felt tight tonight, so I took some medicine and went to sleep. Later, I heard someone banging on the door... As soon as I sat up, I couldn’t catch my breath... COUGH COUGH... Young Miss, what’s going on?" the butler said between gasps.
"It’s nothing, just a pack of dogs."
"Dogs? We don’t keep any dogs in the manor. How could..."
"Stray dogs. They came looking for a bite."
The butler was confused. He looked around at his situation and scrambled up from the ground in surprise. "What... What happened? Why am I..."
A muscle twitched in the Left General’s cheek, his eyes dark and grim.
"So this is the man the great Left General found so suspicious. A top official from the Ministry of War sees an old man like this and cries foul. What more is there to say? Why not just take us all away? That way, when you find nothing, you won’t have to invent new suspicions about the General’s manor."
The Left General’s fingers clenched into a fist.
Seeing him stand motionless, Zhan Yi gave him a nudge. "Well, Left General? If you’re going to take someone, hurry up." freewёbnoνel.com
The Left General took a heavy breath. "Withdraw."
"You’d better be sure, Left General. Don’t come back later claiming the General’s manor is harboring suspicious individuals."
The Left General had truly stumbled today. He turned and strode out of the General’s manor, his hundred-odd soldiers falling into formation behind him.
As the soldiers left, a young servant immediately shut the main gates.
Zhan Yi spat. "Tch. That Left General is a real piece of work. What suspicious people could the General’s manor possibly have? He’s clearly just abusing his authority for personal revenge."
"That’s enough. Stop talking," Lady Zhan chided, walking over to Ye Qianning. "Pangtuan, come with Grandma."
