Chapter 373: Such a Vicious Little Girl
The palace maid looked up, her heart pounding with fear. She shakily rose and picked up the comb, but she didn’t dare look into the bronze mirror.
Ye Qianning thought to herself, ’What a vicious little girl. No wonder White Spirit was so terrified upon hearing she’d woken up.’
Once her hair was combed, Yuan Xinyou rose and walked around the screen into the main hall.
White Spirit was curled up in its cage, trembling violently.
Yuan Xinyou stared at it for a moment. "Bring its food."
The palace maid withdrew and returned moments later carrying a tray. On the tray was raw meat, along with several kinds of fruit.
Yuan Xinyou used a long needle to spear a piece of bloody meat and pushed it into the cage. "Hurry and eat."
White Spirit didn’t move. It kept its head tucked against its belly, its little paws covering it.
"Eat," Yuan Xinyou repeated.
When the creature in the cage still didn’t move, she flicked the silver needle in her hand. The bloody meat dropped into the cage, and the needle’s tip pierced White Spirit’s fur.
"SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK!" White Spirit immediately began to thrash about.
Ye Qianning’s eyes darkened. With a flick of her finger, the cage on the table toppled to the floor, and White Spirit tumbled out.
Yuan Xinyou jumped in fright. Seeing White Spirit out of its cage, she bent down to grab it.
Terrified of her, White Spirit bolted for the door the moment she bent over.
"Catch it! Someone, catch it!" Yuan Xinyou cried in alarm, running out the door.
"Miss Yuan, please slow down!" The palace maid rushed to support her.
Hearing the shouts, the guards immediately gave chase.
As a wild animal from the mountains, White Spirit was incredibly agile. It leaped back and forth on the rockery, shaking off the guards, then quickly scrambled up a Xinghua tree by the palace wall. With a powerful jump, it cleared the wall and was gone.
"Don’t let it get away!" Yuan Xinyou shouted, chasing it out of the courtyard.
The palace maid supported her, half-bent at the waist, terrified that one misstep would anger the young tyrant and cost her her life. frёeωebɳovel.com
The guards chased it from the courtyard all the way to the Imperial Garden, but then White Spirit vanished. They searched the entire area but found no trace of it.
Yuan Xinyou was in poor health, and her face grew even paler from the chase. "Where is it?"
"Miss Yuan, we lost it."
"Find it. The creature is injured; it can’t have run far." Yuan Xinyou clutched her chest, gasping for breath.
"Miss Yuan, please sit and rest. They’ll surely catch White Spirit." The palace maid remained bowed, beads of sweat forming on her forehead.
"Useless fool! You go find it for me too."
"Yes."
Yuan Xinyou stared out at the vast Imperial Garden. ’I finally managed to catch a White Spirit. It was the medicinal catalyst for my illness. In just a few more days, I could have taken its heart and liver for my medicine... and it just had to escape.’
’The lock on White Spirit’s cage can’t be opened without a key, and it certainly wouldn’t have broken just from a fall. Who in the world unlocked it?’
’Once White Spirit is caught, I’ll go back and interrogate the palace maid who was on watch. If I find out who was so careless, I’ll have them flayed alive!’
"Miss Yuan! White Spirit! Look, it’s White Spirit!" the palace maid beside her suddenly cried out.
Yuan Xinyou shot her a glare, and the frightened palace maid immediately fell silent.
White Spirit hopped a few times in a flowerbed up ahead, then darted right up to Yuan Xinyou’s feet.
Yuan Xinyou cautiously bent down to grab it, but it suddenly lunged. Her eyes widened. She reacted quickly, tilting her head just as its sharp claws swiped down, landing on her neck.
"Sss..."
Yuan Xinyou gasped in pain, raising a hand to her neck.
"Miss Yuan!" The palace maid cried out, horrified.
"Catch it! And take out its heart and liver immediately!" Yuan Xinyou seethed. ’In the blink of an eye, the little beast seems to have recovered quite a bit. How dare it injure me.’
White Spirit seemed disappointed that it hadn’t clawed her face, but its strike had not been light. It hopped tauntingly in front of her, then wiggled its rear and scampered off.
