Chapter 12: A Place to Belong
—REN—
I did not understand why she chose me.
That thought stayed with me from the moment she reached out her hand.
Even now, as I walked beside her through the crowded market, I found myself glancing at her sleeve, still lightly gripping it as if it were the only thing keeping me anchored in place.
The noise around us pressed in from all sides, loud and alive, but it no longer felt as suffocating as it had before. Perhaps it was because I was no longer alone in it.
She looked down at me and smiled, as if nothing about this was unusual.
"Ren, was it?" she asked.
I nodded quickly. "Yes, my lady."
She paused, then turned to face me properly. There was something in her gaze that made me straighten without thinking.
"...Let us not do that," she said.
I blinked, confused. "My lady?"
"The title," she clarified. "You may call me Aria."
The name felt strange in my mouth before I even tried to say it. It was not right. Someone like me did not address my benefactor so casually, especially someone like her who was actually a noble.
"I cannot," I said, shaking my head.
"You can," she replied, her tone gentle but leaving no room for argument. "And you will. Consider it your first task."
A task.
That made it easier to accept.
"...Yes... Aria," I said, the word unfamiliar and careful.
She nodded once, satisfied, as if I had done something worth approving.
"That is better."
We continued walking after that, and I became more aware of everything around us. The market was loud, full of movement and color, filled with voices that blended together into something constant. It was a place I had passed through before, but never like this. Never without watching every direction at once. Never without calculating where to run if needed.
Now, I found myself looking at things I would have ignored before.
Food. Fabric. People who were not looking at me like I was something to be used or dismissed.
Then she stopped.
"...Right," she said quietly.
I followed her gaze, then looked down at myself.
I had not thought about it until now.
My clothes were worn thin, uneven at the edges, marked by time and use. They had served their purpose. That was enough.
"I am fine like this," I said quickly, before she could say anything.
"You are not," she replied just as quickly.
I hesitated. "I can manage."
"I do not doubt that," she said. "But managing is not the same as living properly."
I did not have an answer to that.
Before I could think of one, she had already stepped into one of the clothing stores, motioning for me to follow. I obeyed without question, though uncertainty settled heavily in my chest.
She moved through the fabrics with ease, as if she had done this many times before. Her hands brushed across the materials, testing their quality, her attention focused and precise.
"Something that allows you to move easily," she murmured. "And something that does not fall apart after one wash."
The vendor approached, polite and attentive. "Looking for anything specific, miss?"
"Yes," she said, picking up a tunic and holding it briefly against me. "For him."
The vendor nodded and quickly selected several options. "These will suit him well."
"I will take them," she said immediately.
I stepped back, startled. "Aria, that is too much."
"It is clothing," she replied calmly. "Not a political alliance."
I did not know how to respond to that.
My hands hovered uncertainly as she gathered the garments. I was not used to being given anything, much less something chosen with care.
She noticed.
Her tone softened slightly. "You cannot begin a better life while dressed like you are still running from the last one."
That made me pause.
A better life.
The words felt distant, like something meant for someone else.
But she said them as if they were already true.
"...Alright," I said quietly.
She selected a few more pieces, not too many, but enough that I felt overwhelmed just holding them. When she handed them to me, I took them carefully, as if they might disappear if I was not careful enough.
"...Thank you," I said.
"You will earn it back," she replied. "Eventually."
That made it easier to accept.
If it was something to repay, then it was not something I was simply taking.
We left the store, and I thought it was over.
It was not.
She looked down at my feet next.
"...We are addressing that next," she said.
I followed her gaze and shook my head. "I am fine with mere sandals."
"No," she said simply.
There was no room for argument in that answer.
I opened my mouth, then closed it again. Something in her expression told me it would not matter what I said.
"...Understood," I replied.
It felt strange to give in so easily. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
But I did.
By the time we finished, I felt different.
When she stepped back and looked at me, I found myself standing straighter without realizing it.
"There," she said. "Now you look like someone who belongs somewhere."
I blinked at her.
"...Belongs?"
The word felt unfamiliar.
"Yes," she said simply.
I did not know how to answer that.
Belonging was not something I had ever considered for myself. It was not something people like me were given. It was something we watched others have.
Before I could think further, she reached out and placed her hand gently on my head.
The gesture caught me off guard.
It was not rough. Not dismissive.
It was... warm.
"You belong to me now, Ren," she said, smiling slightly. "And from now on, no one will belittle you or hurt you. No one will take you away."
I froze.
The world around us seemed to quiet, though I knew it had not actually changed.
My grip tightened slightly around the clothes I was holding.
No one will take me away...?
I had heard promises before.
They never lasted.
But this...
This felt different.
Not because I believed it completely.
But because she said it like she intended to make it true.
I looked at her, searching for something in her expression. Doubt. Hesitation. Anything that would make this easier to dismiss.
But there was none.
Only certainty.
And for the first time in a long while, I felt this unfamiliar emotion settle in my chest.
"...Alright," I said softly.
As I stood there, holding clothes that were mine and hearing words I had never expected to hear, I realized something.
For the first time....I was no longer thinking about where to run.
And I knew, I would give my life for her if she wants me to.
