Chapter 46: Give me his name
As soon as I stepped out of the building, I immediately turned my attention to where the muscular guards were dragging Carter.
I couldn’t afford to lose track of him. I knew Carter was already as good as dead, but perhaps he still had a little useful information for me.
A minute later, I finally spotted him.
Before following them, however, I reached into my pocket and pulled out a tiny tracking chip. I stared at the device resting in my palm before letting out a snort.
I walked along the path, bumping into a buyer on purpose. In a matter of seconds, I managed to slip the tiny tracking chip into his cloak.
"I’m sorry."
The buyer grumbled while shooting me a cold glare.
"Watch where you’re going, bastard!"
Then, he spat on the ground before walking away. I quickly returned to my target. I followed the guards to a corner of the building before ducking behind a trash bin to hide myself. I peeked at them and narrowed my eyes as they tossed Carter into a nearby trash bin like a ragged doll.
The two guards gave Carter one last glance before returning to the bar.
A few minutes later, I finally headed over to Carter, who lay motionless on a pile of trash. His body was covered in fatal wounds, and blood stained his clothes. His limbs were twisted like broken straw, lying limply atop the pile of trash.
His eyes were vacant as they stared at me.
I checked his chest, only to find that his mana core had been shattered. I let out a sigh as I transferred my mana into Carter’s broken mana core, trying to buy him a little more time.
I took off my full-face mask, revealing my true face to Carter before asking in a calm voice,
"Give me his name."
A weak smile spread across Carter’s face before he struggled to utter the words. But his voice was too faint to hear, so I leaned closer, my ears perked up.
I frowned when I heard the name.
"Travis FitzRoy."
I knew him. He was the eldest son of Desmond FitzRoy, the captain of the Royal Pendragon Knights. I scratched my head in surprise because, for some reason, I also had a certain connection to his family. After all, I had killed Leon FitzRoy at my family’s banquet.
Now, I began to remember all the trouble I had been dealing with at the academy. At his age, he was now a second-year student. It might have been him. He was the first suspect that came to mind because I had killed his brother. So, it made sense for him to be the one causing me trouble.
But it was still just speculation because it wasn’t just me who was a troublemaker – my wife was too.
I nodded in satisfaction.
"Thank you. That’s useful information. With it, I’ll have a weapon against him in the future. Once I gather all the evidence, I’ll throw him in prison. After all, I’m also his long-term business partner."
Carter’s breath grew shallow and ragged as his vision began to blur. He was dying.
He struggled to utter one last sentence before finally drawing his last breath.
"I-I want to see the stars in the sky."
I simply nodded before wrapping him in my cloak. Then I quickly picked him up and activated [Abyssal Shadow Step].
Five minutes later, I was already standing on the rooftop of a nearby five-story building. I gently laid him down in the best spot to see the stars in the sky... however,
He was dead.
His eyes were still open, but I knew there was nothing left in them. His pupils were already fully dilated – an ordinary sign of death.
My eyes remained empty and emotionless as I stared at his lifeless body.
I didn’t feel anything, but the truth was that I still owed him a few things.
I let out a sigh while gazing at the stars in the sky.
"I’ll take revenge for you in place of your unfulfilled last wish. It’s a proper repayment for serving as my tool for a short time.’’
Afterward, I left his corpse in front of the entrance to a nearby building. Someone would find him. At least his death wouldn’t be in vain. The police would find him and give him a proper funeral.
A few hours later, I returned to my dormitory room at 1 a.m. To my surprise, my wife was still awake. She was still sitting in her wheelchair, waiting for me.
She wheeled herself over to me and sniffed at my clothes. Then, she frowned in irritation.
"Your clothes carry another woman’s scent ."
Then, she stared at me, hesitating for a few seconds before asking. Her voice carried a hint of worry and displeasure.
"Did you get bored of me? I-I thought you were a faithful man."
I simply ignored her and took off my cloak. I was about to take a shower, but I paused and pressed my temples a few times when I heard my wife’s shaky sob.
She was about to cry.
I hated it. It was especially annoying for someone like me.
I answered in a calm voice.
"Don’t worry. No woman in this world could ever give me peace except you. I would never get close to any woman except you."
I added,
"As for that woman’s scent, she only grabbed my arm to slip a tiny tracking chip into my pocket. I kicked her away before she could do anything else."
...
"Thank you for telling me the truth," my wife said. Her expression returned to its usual calmness, as if she hadn’t been on the verge of tears just moments ago.
I sighed.
It seemed my wife really knew what irritated me and was exploiting that weakness. Perhaps, from now on, I couldn’t ignore her anymore. Otherwise, she would cry again just to piss me off.
Moreover, I had to keep her personality in mind: she had both tsundere and yandere tendencies. It would be better if I didn’t get close to any other woman in the future.
