Chapter 32: Chapter 32

"Alpha Wayne, I really need to leave," Fleur said nervously. "I have work, and I can’t afford to miss an entire day at the office."

Christian’s expression immediately darkened.

"Can’t you take a day off?"

The question sounded more like a command than a request.

"No."

Fleur’s answer was firm and immediate.

Christian released a low sigh of disappointment. His wolf disliked the idea of letting her out of sight, especially after finally spending a peaceful night with her nearby.

"Fine," he relented reluctantly. "Will you come back this evening?"

Fleur narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

"Only if you behave yourself."

Christian raised an eyebrow. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

"You must listen to the doctors, take your medication without arguing, and eat every meal on time."

The Alpha King looked thoroughly unimpressed by the conditions.

Yet after a moment, he nodded.

"And if I do all that?" His silver eyes locked onto hers. "You’ll come back to me?"

The quiet hope in his voice caught Fleur off guard. Her heartbeat stumbled unexpectedly.

Moon Goddess help her, this man was dangerous.

Not because he was ruthless. Not because he was powerful. But because he knew exactly how to look at a woman and make her forget every sensible thought in her head.

Fortunately, Fleur reminded herself that she knew Christian Wayne better than anyone.

Or at least she used to.

"I’ll think about it," she replied flatly.

Christian looked as though he wanted to negotiate further.

Fleur didn’t give him the opportunity.

She gathered her belongings and escaped before the Alpha could come up with another excuse to keep her there.

By the time Fleur arrived at her office, she felt utterly exhausted.

Christian alone was enough work for an entire week.

The moment she stepped into the building, however, she noticed something strange. The atmosphere was unusually tense. Employees clustered together in small groups. Whispers filled the open workspace.

Nearly everyone seemed glued to their phones.

Fleur frowned.

"What’s going on?"

Her voice immediately cut through the chatter. Every employee straightened. Several people quickly hid their phones.

"Back to work."

The command carried enough authority to send everyone scrambling.

Satisfied, Fleur headed toward her office.

Lea immediately followed behind her.

The moment the door closed, Fleur dropped her handbag onto the desk and powered up her computer.

"What happened?"

Lea looked surprised. "You haven’t seen the news?"

Fleur groaned. Since becoming entangled with Christian Wayne again, she barely had time to breathe, much less keep up with current events.

"No." She pinched the bridge of her nose. "Tell me."

Lea hesitated but had no other choice than to speak.

"Henri Leroy was found dead this morning."

Fleur froze. "What?"

The words left her lips in a whisper.

"He was shot." Lea’s expression grew grim. "Execution style."

Shock rippled through Fleur’s body. For several moments, she simply stared at her friend in disbelief. Her mind struggled to process the information.

"Who would do something like that?"

"No one knows." Lea shrugged uneasily. "The rumors say organized crime was involved."

Fleur’s stomach tightened. A cold feeling settled in her chest. Her thoughts immediately drifted toward one particular Alpha.

"No..." she whispered.

Surely not. Even Christian wouldn’t... Would he?

Pushing the thought away, she forced herself to focus.

"What’s my schedule?"

Lea immediately switched into professional mode.

"You have a supplier meeting before lunch." She checked her tablet. "The rest of the afternoon has been cleared, just as you requested."

Fleur nodded approvingly. At least something was going right.

Then Lea hesitated once more.

"There is one thing."

Fleur immediately became suspicious. "What?"

"You have an appointment with Lord Monroe this evening."

Fleur closed her eyes, feeling another wave of fatigue washing over her.

"I thought I said to clear my evening too."

Lea offered an apologetic smile.

"I tried."

The blush creeping onto her cheeks told Fleur everything she needed to know.

Lord Monroe’s name had that effect on her assistant.

"He’s royalty." Lea shrugged helplessly. "I couldn’t exactly refuse."

Fleur rolled her eyes.

She knew perfectly well that Lea secretly enjoyed every opportunity to attend aristocratic functions.

"Fine."

A victorious grin instantly appeared on Lea’s face.

"Remind me later."

"Yes, boss."

Her enthusiasm was impossible to miss. Fleur shook her head.

Then Lea’s expression turned curious.

"By the way..."

Fleur already disliked where this was going.

"What happened to you?"

"What do you mean?"

"I’ve never seen you this grumpy."

Fleur stared blankly at her computer screen. Several seconds passed before she finally muttered quietly, "Spend twenty-four hours with Christian Wayne."

Lea laughed. Fleur didn’t.

Only she knew how difficult it was to remain sane around that man.

Three years with him had nearly destroyed her. One day back in his orbit already felt dangerous.

Meanwhile, across the city, the subject of her frustration had once again ignored every doctor’s order.

Syrus looked up from his tablet the moment Christian entered the penthouse.

The Alpha was accompanied by several pack guards.

His expression immediately darkened.

"Where have you been?"

Christian continued walking.

"As you can see, I went out."

Syrus looked ready to strangle him.

The television nearby displayed breaking news coverage regarding Henri Leroy’s death.

His gaze shifted from the screen to Christian. Then to the blood seeping through the shoulder of Christian’s white dress shirt.

His jaw tightened.

"You left the penthouse."

Christian removed his suit jacket with visible discomfort.

"I noticed."

Syrus immediately stepped forward to help. The sight of fresh blood only worsened his mood.

"Have you completely lost your mind?"

His voice dropped lower.

"Do you realize what happens if someone connects you to this?"

Christian looked genuinely confused.

"Connect me to what?" fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

Syrus pointed toward the television. The answer should have been obvious.

"Henri Leroy."

Christian simply shrugged. The casual response made Syrus want to bang his head against a wall.

"It was you."

"So?"

The single word nearly gave Syrus an aneurysm.

"So?" He stared in disbelief. "You’re risking exposure."

Christian said nothing. His silence was confirmation enough.

Syrus dragged a hand across his face.

"Why?"

No answer came. The Alpha simply continued toward his bedroom.

"Why are you risking everything for one woman?"

Still silence.

Christian paused at the doorway. His wolf stirred beneath his skin. Images of Fleur surfaced immediately.

Her smile. Her scent. The sound of her voice. The way she fussed over him despite trying not to care.

For him, the answer was obvious. Some things were worth any risk. Even if nobody else understood.

Syrus watched him carefully, then he sighed.

"I just want you alive, Christian."

The frustration drained from his voice.

"I hope she’s worth all this."

Christian’s gaze drifted toward the city skyline beyond the window. Toward the place where Fleur was. His expression softened. More than Syrus had ever seen.

"She is."

The answer came without hesitation. Without doubt. Without regret.

And that certainty told Syrus everything he needed to know.

Christian Wayne was already lost.

Not to an enemy. Not to power. Not to war.

But to the woman who didn’t even realize she owned his wolf’s heart.
