Chapter 28: Chapter 28

Christian finished the final spoonful of soup before reluctantly swallowing his medication.

Fleur released a quiet breath of relief.

At least one battle had been won.

"You’re all set for tonight, Alpha Wayne," she said as she rose from the edge of the bed and carried the tray toward the nearby coffee table. "There’s extra soup in the kitchen if you get hungry later."

She had barely taken two steps before a large hand closed around her wrist.

"Stay."

The single word was spoken softly, yet it carried the unmistakable authority of an Alpha accustomed to being obeyed.

Fleur froze.

Her gaze dropped to where Christian’s hand encircled her slender wrist.

Even injured, his grip was warm and possessive.

"Alpha Wayne..." She swallowed nervously before meeting his silver eyes. "I need to go home."

His expression darkened.

"My children are waiting for me."

At the mention of her children, something gentler flickered across his features.

Then, without hesitation, he said, "Bring them here."

Fleur arched her brows. "What?"

"I’ll have rooms prepared immediately. They can stay here with you."

His tone suggested he was offering the most reasonable solution imaginable.

"The penthouse is large enough."

"No."

The answer came so quickly that it startled even her.

Christian frowned. "Why not?"

Because she didn’t want him anywhere near her children. Because her twins were far too clever. Because one look at Christian and they would begin asking questions she couldn’t answer. Questions that would lead to truths she wasn’t prepared to face herself.

Her heart began racing wildly.

"They can’t come here."

Christian’s eyes narrowed. "Why?"

"Why would we move in with you?" Fleur shot back.

She tugged at her wrist, but freeing herself from the Alpha King’s grip proved impossible.

Christian regarded her calmly.

"I would like you here."

The simple honesty behind the statement caught her off guard.

For a brief moment, neither spoke. Then Fleur shook her head.

"Thank you, but we’re perfectly happy where we are. We have no connection to you either. It’s just weird."

Her irritation resurfaced. "So if you’ll kindly let me leave—"

"Please." The interruption startled her. freēwebnovel.com

Christian’s voice had softened. Dangerously softened. His wolf, usually fierce and dominant, seemed strangely subdued whenever he looked at her.

"I still don’t feel well."

Fleur sighed. "What?"

"What if something happens after you leave?" His expression turned almost serious. "After all, I was injured protecting you."

The emotional manipulation was so shameless that Fleur nearly laughed.

"You’re unbelievable."

Christian remained completely unapologetic.

His wolf had spent years in agony. If guilt helped keep her here, then guilt would be used.

Fleur rubbed her throbbing temples.

Had he just pouted? Surely not. The feared Alpha King of the underworld couldn’t possibly be pouting.

Yet the stubborn expression on his face suggested otherwise. If anyone told her this story tomorrow, she wouldn’t believe it herself.

"The doctors are here." She pointed toward the door. "Your packmates are here."

Another point. "Half the city is probably standing outside your bedroom."

A third point. "You’ll survive one night without me."

"Stay." Christian ignored every single argument.

His eyes never left her face. Not for a second. The intensity of his gaze made her increasingly uncomfortable.

It wasn’t lust. It wasn’t obsession. It was something far more dangerous. Like... Recognition. As though his wolf had already chosen her long ago.

Fleur glared at him, frustrated.

Christian simply continued staring back.

Eventually she realized the truth.

He wasn’t letting go. Not anytime soon.

Defeated, she sighed dramatically and sat back down on the edge of the bed.

"There." She crossed her arms. "Happy?"

A rare smile tugged at the corner of Christian’s lips. His wolf practically purred.

Several minutes passed. Christian’s eyes gradually drifted shut. His grip on her wrist remained firm, as though he feared she might vanish the moment he released her.

Fleur watched him for a while, silent. Then exhaustion claimed her as well.

The long day. The emotional turmoil. The constant worrying... Everything finally caught up with her.

Before she realized it, her eyes closed. Moments later, soft breathing filled the room.

When Christian opened his eyes sometime later, silence greeted him.

For a second, panic gripped him.

Then he saw her. Fleur had fallen asleep.

Her head rested against the padded headboard, tilted slightly to one side. A few strands of hair had fallen across her face.

She looked peaceful. Safe. Completely unaware of the Alpha watching her.

Christian’s chest tightened with ache. His wolf stirred contentedly.

Carefully, he sat upright. The movement pulled painfully at his injured shoulder, but he ignored it. Pain meant nothing compared to losing this moment.

Slowly, he slid one arm beneath Fleur’s knees and another around her back.

She barely stirred as he lifted her. As though some instinct recognized him. Trusted him.

The realization sent warmth spreading through his chest.

Gently, he laid her beside him and pulled the blanket over her.

Almost immediately, Fleur shifted closer. Seeking warmth. Seeking comfort.

Her head settled against his shoulder. Ironically, it was the injured one.

Christian didn’t care. Not even a little. His entire world narrowed to the woman sleeping peacefully against him.

For the first time in years, his wolf felt calm––a feeling he had long believed impossible.

Carefully reaching toward the bedside table, Christian grabbed his phone.

A few moments later, Syrus’s phone vibrated.

Christian: Inform Fleur’s family she’ll be staying here tonight.

Christian: Increase security around her residence.

Christian: No mistakes.

The response came almost immediately.

Syrus: Understood.

Syrus: I’ll handle it personally.

Satisfied, Christian set the phone aside. His arm tightened slightly around Fleur.

Then he closed his eyes. Sleep came easier than it had in years.

Syrus stopped by a convenience store on the way and purchased several cartons of premium ice cream.

Bribery worked exceptionally well on children. Especially intelligent children. A lesson he had learned long ago.

By the time he arrived at Fleur’s luxury apartment building, security had already been informed of his visit.

After receiving Lea’s approval, he was escorted upstairs.

Straightening his suit jacket, Syrus rang the bell. A few seconds later, the door opened.

And for the first time that evening, he forgot what he had come to say.

The woman standing before him was stunning. Not merely attractive... Dangerously attractive.

Long dark hair framed delicate features, while intelligent brown eyes regarded him with cautious curiosity.

This was Lea? Fleur’s assistant? The woman responsible for helping raise two children?

Syrus had expected someone practical and ordinary. Instead, he found himself momentarily speechless.

Which was unacceptable.

He was a lawyer; words were literally his profession.

"Good evening, Miss Undine." He recovered quickly and offered a charming smile. "I’m Syrus Stone."

He extended his hand. "Alpha Wayne’s beta and legal advisor."

Lea accepted the handshake politely. "Good evening, Mr. Stone."

Her brows furrowed. "What brings you here so late?"

For one catastrophic second, Syrus forgot every prepared sentence.

His brain supplied only one answer.

You.

The word nearly escaped. Barely catching himself, he coughed into his fist. Then he forced his professional mask back into place.

"I came regarding Miss Swann."

Immediately, Lea’s expression sharpened. Concern flashed across her face.

Syrus suddenly realized this conversation had become far more complicated than delivering a simple message.

And unfortunately for him, Lea was proving far more distracting than any courtroom opponent he had ever faced.
