Chapter 18: Chapter 18

Syrus stepped into Christian’s office carrying a thick black file in his hand, his expression unusually tense.

"This is everything we found on Fleur Swann," he said, placing the folder on the massive oak desk before the Alpha King.

Christian barely lifted his eyes from the documents he had been signing.

"You obtained all of this rather quickly," he remarked coldly, a faint trace of sarcasm lacing his voice.

Syrus smirked faintly and loosened the knot of his tie.

"I employ very efficient people." ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

And it was true.

As one of the most feared lawyers in Europe—and the man responsible for cleaning up the Wayne family’s countless shadows—Syrus had built an elite network capable of uncovering almost anything. Years spent working beside Christian Wayne had sharpened him into something far more dangerous than an ordinary attorney.

He had learned how to survive among all kinds of wolves.

"Though I haven’t gone through the file myself yet," Syrus admitted as he opened the folder. "The moment it arrived, I brought it straight to you."

Christian said nothing.

His silver-blue eyes remained fixed on the papers in his hands, sharp and unreadable, while his wolf prowled restlessly beneath his calm exterior.

Syrus flipped through the first few pages.

"According to this, Fleur Swann started out as an assistant to the renowned designer Melanie Priss before launching her own company. Apparently, her rise in the business world was ridiculously fast. She became successful enough to attract plenty of jealous enemies."

Christian silently continued reading his own copy.

The deeper he looked into Fleur’s life, the heavier the unease inside him became.

Odette had known nothing about interior design. She had never even worked a day in her life.

When she married him, she had still been studying at the academy, but he had demanded she leave school and dedicate herself entirely to him and the pack. Back then, he’d convinced himself it was for her safety.

Now, looking back, it felt more like control.

Another difference. Another crack in the impossible hope clawing at his chest.

Then Syrus suddenly paused. His eyes widened slightly as he read the next page.

"Well... this is interesting."

Christian’s gaze flicked toward him.

Syrus cleared his throat.

"It says Fleur Swann has been in a long-term relationship with Raphael Dumas." He turned another page slowly. "And they have twins together."

The words struck the room like a gunshot.

For the first time since Syrus arrived, Christian’s expression shifted.

A fracture in the ice.

Christian’s eyes lowered to the photograph attached to the report, and the world around him seemed to stop.

The children in the picture were the same twins he had encountered at the shopping mall while accompanying Carrie.

The little girl with the bright smile.

And the boy...

Christian’s breathing turned dangerously slow.

In the photograph, Fleur stood beside Raphael, her smile radiant beneath the sunlight. Raphael held one child’s hand while Fleur carried the other against her side. Together, they looked painfully complete.

Like a family. Like happiness.

Something Christian had never been able to give Odette.

Then Syrus leaned closer to the photo—and nearly choked.

"Moon Goddess..." His stunned gaze snapped toward Christian. "The boy..."

He looked back at the picture again in disbelief. "The boy looks exactly like you."

Syrus stared harder at the child’s face—the sharp brows, the cold eyes, the unmistakable resemblance to the Wayne bloodline.

"If I didn’t know better," he muttered slowly, "I’d swear that kid was your son instead of Raphael’s."

Christian remained perfectly still.

"That woman is your mate," Syrus said firmly, lifting his head. "There’s no way she isn’t Odette."

"No." Christian’s voice cut through the room like ice. "She is not my mate."

Syrus frowned deeply.

"Christian, I’m not blind. Anyone with eyes can see the resemblance. Women don’t just randomly look identical unless they’re twins."

Unexpectedly, Christian let out a low, humorless laugh.

Then his gaze returned to the photograph.

"Look at her carefully," he murmured. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

Syrus fell silent.

Christian’s eyes lingered on Fleur’s smile—a smile so warm, so genuine, that it almost didn’t feel real.

"She looks happy," he said quietly. "Truly happy."

Something dark flickered behind his eyes.

"I never saw Odette smile like that when she was with me."

The confession settled heavily between them.

"No one ever did."

For a moment, Christian’s wolf stirred painfully beneath his skin, haunted by memories of a quiet luna who had always smiled softly but never brightly.

Never freely.

Never like this.

His jaw tightened.

"That woman has a family," he continued coldly. "A life. Children. She is Fleur Swann—not Odette Wayne."

Without another word, he ripped the report in half.

Then again.

And again.

The papers fell into the trash like shredded ghosts.

Syrus stared at him in complete disbelief.

"You can’t seriously mean that."

"Whenever I make a decision," Christian replied calmly, "I mean it."

"Then why ask for the report in the first place?" Syrus demanded, frustration creeping into his voice.

"To erase my doubts."

"And did you?"

Christian didn’t answer immediately.

For the briefest second, something dangerous flashed behind his emotionless mask.

Pain.

Longing.

Possession.

Then it vanished.

"Yes."

Syrus exhaled sharply and ran a hand through his hair.

"Let me keep digging," he insisted. "Something about this doesn’t make sense."

"There’s no need." Christian’s tone turned final. "I already know she isn’t the woman I was searching for."

"But Christian—"

"That’s enough, Syrus."

The temperature in the room seemed to plummet instantly.

Even Syrus’s wolf instinctively recoiled beneath the crushing dominance in Christian’s voice.

"I have more important matters to deal with than chasing after a woman."

Christian lowered his gaze and resumed signing documents as though the conversation had never happened.

Syrus remained frozen in his chair, staring at the man across from him with growing disbelief.

This wasn’t the Christian Wayne he had known all his life.

The man Syrus grew up beside had always been ruthless, obsessive, and possessive to the bone. If something belonged to Christian, he would destroy the entire world before letting it go.

Especially when it came to Odette.

Syrus had witnessed firsthand what losing her had done to him.

For six years, Christian had lived like a ghost wearing the skin of an Alpha King. Cold. Violent. Empty. His wolf had nearly gone feral from the agony of losing its mate.

And now?

Now that fate had seemingly returned her to him... Christian was letting her walk away.

It didn’t make sense.

Unless...

Syrus’s eyes slowly narrowed.

Had Christian truly convinced himself Fleur wasn’t Odette?

Or was he letting her go because, for the first time in his life... He loved her enough to choose her happiness over his own?
