Chapter 656: Chapter 675: If Your Boyfriend Is a Soldier

She suddenly missed Mo Si terribly.

It was as if, in some unforeseen moment, her longing had coalesced into a tidal wave, crashing down upon her.

...

Jiang Qiuqiu didn’t know if Mo Si was busy, so she tentatively placed a call. If he didn’t pick up, she wouldn’t try again. But if he did, they could talk for a bit.

He hadn’t answered her calls for the past two days, only managing to send back a few messages at odd, hectic hours.

He’d been a little busy lately.

But none of the official media outlets she followed had any reports about the front lines.

Her mind wandered, and after a few beeps, the call unexpectedly went through.

Jiang Qiuqiu had initiated a video call.

While it was still a bright evening on Federation Star, Polar Star had no daylight. In the video feed, Mo Si sat inside a Warship. Through the window behind him stretched a vast, green sea of stars.

"Mo Si!"

"Qiuqiu." His expression softened slightly, but even so, it couldn’t conceal the exhaustion etched on his face.

Mo Si was also deeply frustrated. For some reason, the Insect Race had been unusually aggressive ever since their reawakening this year. It wasn’t even their usual peak season, yet they were expanding their territory with a desperate frenzy.

Behind Polar Star lay the Federation Star System. They couldn’t possibly allow these interstellar weapons to breach their defenses. Every soldier piloted a Mecha, ready to fight to the death.

Their high-tech weaponry, powerful individual soldiers, and seamless teamwork ensured victory in every battle.

But in the end, humans and the insects were fundamentally different.

Those things seemed to feel neither exhaustion nor pain, but humans did.

The troops rotated through three continuous shifts, deploying in batches. Mo Si commanded every single engagement, and even a Level 3S powerhouse like him was beginning to feel the strain.

But his second-in-command had not yet arrived, and the general who could oversee the battlefield wasn’t there. For now, he had to be the one to hold the front line.

"Qiuqiu, is it the weekend? Are you on break? Are you at Starry Sky Wander?"

"Mhm, I am. Have you tried the food parameters I sent you?"

"I have. It was delicious, I liked it a lot."

’Too bad it was just a string of data,’ Jiang Qiuqiu thought, her expression turning worried. "Can you receive packages over there? Can I mail some food to you?"

"It’s not convenient right now." And there were no arrangements for it, either.

"What about you, Qiuqiu? How has your training been lately?"

"Same as usual," Jiang Qiuqiu said quickly. "I just started on the Medium-sized Mecha simulator. In another week, I’ll see if I can take a real Mecha for a spin."

"You’re progressing so fast, Qiuqiu," Mo Si marveled.

"Yup, I’m just that fast. Who knows, by the time you get back, I might be piloting a Medium-sized Mecha all over the place."

"I look forward to seeing that."

The familiar chatter flowed between them, as if they could talk forever without tiring.

Jiang Qiuqiu watched him for a long moment before asking, "Have there not been any media broadcasts from the front lines recently? I haven’t seen you at all."

"When we don’t have a clear advantage in battle, they generally don’t broadcast it."

The official media is a mouthpiece for the higher-ups. It typically only reports good news or bad news—either a great victory or a crushing defeat. The former boosts morale, promotes heroes, and aids recruitment. The latter makes everyone tense and on edge, which also aids recruitment.

They don’t usually report on anything in between. Constantly broadcasting a deadlocked, grinding battle is good for neither military morale nor public confidence.

"So that’s how it is..."

"So, when are you heading to school? Are you going tomorrow? Or tonight? If you go tonight, you should leave early. Starry Sky Wander is a long way—"

Even from tens of thousands of light-years away, he was still fussing over her.

But before he could finish, a cacophony of voices and the blare of an alarm erupted from his end. Mo Si’s voice suddenly became choppy and intermittent. Jiang Qiuqiu cranked up the volume, only managing to catch one last phrase: "Something’s come up, don’t worry about me! I have to go!"

And then the call disconnected.

The smile on Jiang Qiuqiu’s face froze.

...

Her cheerful mood vanished in an instant.

In the Hovercar, Jiang Qiuqiu stared out the window into the distance. ’He’s so strong,’ she thought. ’He hasn’t lost a single battle in twenty years. He’s never known defeat.’

And yet—

She still couldn’t help but worry, couldn’t help but feel adrift.

’Is this what longing feels like?’

The irrepressible yearning of a long-distance relationship. Every single moment he was away, she was filled with worry.

This feeling was the absolute worst.

The last entry in their communication log was a message Jiang Qiuqiu had sent after the call was cut off: "Message me when you’re safe."
