Chapter 148: The Mountain Spirit

The next morning, Kazuma went to school alone.

After indulging himself all night long, the charm of the senior and Auntie had been an intense stimulation for Kazuma. He had been unusually wild. Aunt Miyajima and Sakura-senpai were completely exhausted and couldn’t even get out of bed, still sleeping soundly.

It seems that Sakura-senpai will not be going to school today.

Leaving Shizuka behind to take care of them, Kazuma, having thoroughly enjoyed his "donburi," headed to school alone.

He was usually surrounded by beautiful girls without a single moment of peace. Now, he could finally enjoy some solitude while properly organizing his backpack. By the way, Kazuma was wearing a hat on his head—a rather bizarre-looking Stone Cap that made him look bald and somewhat ridiculous.

However, nobody around him laughed, because nobody could actually see him. More accurately, everyone who saw Kazuma subconsciously treated him as if he didn’t exist, like a stone by the roadside, automatically ignoring his presence.

This was an invisibility effect far superior to an ordinary Invisibility Cloak.

Then he looked at the two heart-shaped clumps of soil inside his backpack.

"Heart Soil... Two pieces probably aren’t enough. If I want to create Gaia, this amount is nowhere near sufficient. So should I use one now to test its effects, or save them for Gaia’s birth later?"

Kazuma felt that using one now to test it might not be a bad idea. As for the future... who knew how long it would take before that happened?

After making up his mind, he stopped hesitating. Taking out a Bamboo-copter, he placed it on his head and flew toward the mountain behind the school. The pedestrians and students along the way paid no attention to him at all. Within a few minutes, he arrived at his destination.

It had only been a few days since he last came here, and the Old School Building hadn’t changed much.

"Kazuma," Nanakamado Nanaka floated out. The blonde ghost girl looked both relieved and helpless. "You finally came. Otherwise, she was about to cause a huge scene."

"What?"

Kazuma had just put away the Stone Cap and Bamboo-copter and still hadn’t figured out what was happening. Suddenly, accompanied by a loud "hiss hiss hiss," a massive white serpent lunged out from the grass and tightly coiled itself around him in a crushing embrace.

"Kanna?"

"Hiss hiss hiss————"

This terrifying giant snake seemed to completely change art styles in front of Kazuma. Its large, adorable eyes were filled with grievance, watery and pitiful, as it continuously rubbed its massive head against its master’s face. Its snake head alone was nearly as large as Kazuma himself.

It was obvious just how enormous this snake had become.

Even its body had changed. The previous emerald-green scales were gone, replaced by a soft rosy-white color that looked tender and smooth, with an unexpectedly pleasant touch.

"You’ve grown quite a bit again~"

Unlike Luna and Anna, Kanna couldn’t speak at all and could only make hissing sounds. However, she was highly intelligent, capable of roughly expressing her thoughts and understanding her master’s words.

For example, now, after coiling around her master, this snake girl couldn’t hold back, constantly rubbing her soft body against her master’s pants.

"Hey!"

Kazuma’s face darkened.

"Hiss————"

Nanakamado Nanaka floated in midair with a blank expression, as though she had just witnessed something unbelievable. Then her dead-fish eyes drooped even further.

Kazuma really was... this kind of thing is strange no matter how you think about it, he’s a pervert, with snakes and cats.

He actually went through with it.

"Modern people really go all out..."

Nanakamado Nanaka covered her small face with both hands while secretly peeking at the ambiguous interaction between the human and the snake. Even though she found it perverted, she couldn’t stop herself from sneaking a few more glances.

"Sigh.."

Kazuma sat on the ground, looking completely exhausted. After a long while, he finally stood up and adjusted his pants.

"Kanna, I know staying here all the time is boring for you. Let’s count what just happened as compensation."

"Hiss hiss hiss————"

Kanna looked extremely happy, apparently very fond of this kind of compensation.

"Kazuma, pervert."

Hearing Nanakamado Nanaka’s sideways glance and complaint, Kazuma’s expression remained unchanged. He was too lazy to argue anymore.

"If we’re talking about perverts, I’m only a latecomer."

The ghost girl pouted adorably.

"Has anyone come to the Old School Building during the past few days?" Kazuma asked while patting Kanna’s cute snake face.

"Yes. Your girls come here often. They stop by every day after school to check around," Nanaka replied while blinking. "But over the weekend, there was also a strange girl lingering near the Old School Building. She looked like she wanted to come in, but didn’t dare to."

"Oh? Another girl trying to explore the Old School Building and investigate supernatural school legends?"

There were plenty of girls like that, and Kazuma knew it well.

"What about the back mountain? Nanaka, have you gone there before?"

"No. I’ve only seen it from outside a few times and never actually entered," Nanakamado Nanaka floated beside Kazuma. "But I didn’t sense any aura belonging to my kind inside the mountain. It should just be an ordinary hill. There’s probably nothing like me living there."

"If there isn’t, then I can create one."

"Eh?"

Kazuma didn’t explain further. He put the Bamboo-copter back on his head and flew into the sky. Although Nanakamado Nanaka had no idea what he was planning, she followed after him. Only poor Kanna, unable to fly, could remain lying on the ground while staring up at her master pitifully.

This mountain was directly connected to the Old School Building. More accurately, the Old School Building itself was already within the mountain’s range, separated only by a wire fence. There were even signs of damage on the fence, with a hole large enough for someone to squeeze through.

However, it looked old, so Kazuma casually repaired it with the Restoration Ray.

As if he needed that thing to climb the mountain anyway.

The ghost girl floating behind him watched as Kazuma circled the mountain once before taking out a strange heart-shaped clump of soil. He crushed it and scattered the dust across the mountain and forest below, where it slowly merged into the land.

At that instant, the entire back mountain seemed to shine faintly.

Although the glow was invisible to ordinary eyes, it startled every animal within the forest. One after another, they raised their heads uneasily, as though some terrifying existence had just been born.

Then everything returned to normal, as if nothing had happened at all.

Until now, this mountain had been an ownerless home for them.

But at this moment, the mountain had welcomed its master.

"Kazuma?"

"This should be enough, but nothing seems to have changed," Kazuma muttered while hovering in midair and stroking his chin as he observed the forest below. "Could it need time to evolve?"

"What was that just now?" Nanakamado Nanaka gestured nervously. "Kazuma, what exactly did you do? I suddenly feel like the back mountain became terrifying."

"Terrifying?"

Kazuma turned around.

"Yes. I’ve been here many times before, but I’ve never felt something this frightening," the ghost girl said while shrinking behind him, as though the mountain had transformed into a gigantic abyss ready to swallow her whole. "Kazuma, don’t you feel it?"

"Not really."

Logically speaking, Kazuma’s spiritual senses should already have become extremely sharp, yet he didn’t feel anything unusual. No... more accurately, he did feel something.

The mountain had become far more intimate toward him.

Ah, so that’s what it was.

"Isn’t this basically an upgraded Momotaro rice ball? Becoming close with an entire mountain and all that..." Kazuma muttered.

He flew to the mountaintop and landed on a lush patch of green grass. Nanakamado Nanaka floated far away, unwilling to approach, so Kazuma could only investigate by himself.

That feeling wasn’t an illusion. The mountain truly felt much closer to him now.

It was almost as though he could sense the emotions of the forest beneath his feet...

Not only that, but he also felt an overwhelming familiarity with this place. Even though this was his first time here, it felt as though something around him was silently guiding him.

Plop————

Several unknown fruits suddenly fell beside his feet. Kazuma picked them up, inspected them briefly, then cautiously took a bite after glancing around.

"Pretty sweet..."

A nearby branch suddenly bent downward, while clustered leaves formed a soft cushion in front of him. Kazuma sat down with a plop, only to be gently bounced upward onto the tree itself. Branches and vines intertwined together, forming a comfortable little bed for him.

"This mountain has gained sentience... its own consciousness and soul."

Watching a fresh flower stretch itself toward him, its blooming petals dripping sweet nectar toward his lips, Kazuma tasted it in surprise and couldn’t help exclaiming in admiration.

"As expected of the Soil of Consciousness... it’s incredible."

If the entire Earth could truly gain its own consciousness, then wouldn’t he eventually be able to control everything in the world at will? Those scumbags and degenerates would have nowhere left to hide.

Kazuma inhaled sharply.

"Still... it’s going to take a very long time before that happens..."

Speaking of Gaia, Kazuma patted his forehead. He also had his own artificial universe, which should be almost complete by now. The planet should have roughly taken shape already. He was just about to check on the status of the Genesis Combination.

Nanakamado Nanaka’s shouting voice suddenly rang out, "Kazuma, someone’s coming to the Old School Building————"

Hmm?

If someone came, then someone came. What was the big deal?

"Your pet is about to eat someone!"

"Ah?"

"I have to go. Thanks for the fruits and nectar, they were delicious," Kazuma waved goodbye. The flowers and trees swayed gently as if responding to him. Then Kazuma flew away by the Bamboo-copter.

The mountain forest gradually returned to peace. Everything that had just happened felt almost like an illusion.

But anyone could tell that this mountain was indeed different from before.

After Kazuma’s figure disappeared, within the lush green forest, a tiny fairy-like girl with an entirely emerald-green body cautiously poked out half of her head, quietly watching the direction Kazuma had left.
