Chapter 59: Results

Soon, the final part of the assessment began.

As General Malcolm explained, there was one final assessment before their scores would be culminated and their ranks distributed.

Unlike the rest, they actually knew what it would be... because he told them.

"A multiple-choice aptitude test?" Austin echoed the thought of the masses as he received his tablet from the person handing them out.

He walked to Dale and the rest of his friends. General Malcolm was nowhere to be seen and it wasn’t like they minded.

Dale rolled his eyes as he stared at the empty dull screen of the tablets, "Sounds like those quizzes that schools do."

The reason for the lack of personality in the statement was simple. Dale had gone to a ’learning center’.

Special emphasis had to be laid on ’learning center’ because calling it a school would simply be illegal and an insult to all schools.

The reason for this was that, while it was many things, horrendous and torturous being the most notorious, it technically wasn’t registered with the government. So, technically, Dale never had a formal education.

And so while they did in fact teach him how to read and write — a miracle, all things considered — they hadn’t done some of the things that schools actually did.

A prime example was a field trip. In Dale’s ’learning center’, they hadn’t done that. What they did, instead, was play, which was in retrospect, an odd game.

’Identify the gang sign.’ He sucked his teeth as he remembered the game he was alarmingly good at.

Before the ripe age of ten, he could point out and confidently name every gang sign with startling accuracy. His knowledge eventually seeped into learning their ranking, the leaders, and their territory.

At least the knowledge of the gang had helped him know who he could afford to mess with and keep his head.

’Isn’t education supposed to allow you to survive? So all in all, I guess my education did fulfill its purpose. I survived the slums.’

Dake placed a hand under his chin. ’Perhaps I will pay a visit to the slums again.’ He was sure that he alone could topple the balance of power.

Most of the gang leaders were Dormant with Awakened vice-leaders. Only a few were actually Awakened themselves.

And since Dale was sure he could square up nicely against the average Awakened, why wouldn’t he go cause some mischief and settle old scores while he was at it?

’Hehe. So there were boons to joining the military.’ If he had gone to work for a company or a criminal syndicate — which was far more likely — he wouldn’t have gotten his quasi-Ascended sabers so soon nor would he have an amazing martial prowess to go with it.

Austin was still mumbling something along the lines of watching a movie instead of a test when all the tablet screens lit up.

Dale’s tablet, alongside everyone else’s, buzzed. The screens flashed white then displayed the first question.

Dale read it and raised an eyebrow. "What?"

The question was as follows:

1) Imagine you’re in front of a train’s lever. If you pull it, the train would run over them and ten random people will die but if you don’t, the train would only run over your closest friend, killing them. Are you pulling the lever?

A) Yes

B) No

He was visibly confused. ’What sort of question is this?’ As far as he knew, he didn’t work for a locomotive company.

So why was he in front of a train lever and why couldn’t the random people or his closest friend move out of the way?

Were they tied? If they were, that would even be more of a reason to free them so that the sicko that did it wouldn’t have their way.

Also, trains were pretty much a thing that was going extinct so why were they in a train station?

The question was completely out of the blue and had no relevance or plot leading to it.

’And who knows, maybe I want the train to run over eleven of them.’ The question couldn’t predict his train of thought at such a high-stakes moment.

Ignoring the pun, he turned to his friends and saw them also as visibly disturbed by the questions.

He turned back to his tablet and no matter how much he tried, he couldn’t skip the question.

Dale let out a frustrated sigh and tapped on option B. If Austin and ten random people were in danger, he’d save the former.

For all he knew, the ten could be puppy-eating psychopaths. Plus, as much as he’d like to deny, he was quite fond of the muscular redhead. freёwebnoѵel.com

The tablet buffered for a few seconds then displayed a new question that was arguably more odd than the first.

It read:

2) Black coffee or Cappuccino?

A) Black coffee

B) Cappuccino

Dale rubbed his eyes vigorously. He certainly had to be seeing things. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time.

"Do you think they got hacked?" Gary leaned in closer to them and whispered.

Austin nodded, agreeing.

Even Trevor seemed to agree with them. There was absolutely nothing reasonable about the questions being asked.

Sarah tapped on her tablet’s screen. "I just answered a question on which color I preferred. Green or White? Odd. Are we sure we aren’t filling out a form for a dating site?" She joked.

Whether that was the test or not, they had to answer and that was what they did.

Dale stared at the two options for a while. He hadn’t had either of the two before so he chose a cappuccino.

They decided not to put too much thought into the questions, answering as honestly as they could.

Soon, they finished and started comparing answers.

"So you’re telling me that you like blueberries?" Austin pointed at Trevor like he had found out he was having an affair.

Trevor shrugged. "And? What does it matter?"

The redhead placed a hand over his heart, "Those PURPLE fruits aren’t even that good. It’s all hype."

That was how their conversation went until General Malcolm appeared again. This time with a tablet in his hand.

He cleared his throat.

"Thank you all for participating but alas, not everyone is worthy of being at the very top. These are the results."
