Chapter 52: Chapter 52: A Doctor Daughter-in-law
"Yvonne is here!"
Daisy Shaw was sitting on the sofa. When she saw Yvonne Sutton arrive, she quickly stood up and trotted over happily to greet her.
"Mom," Yvonne Sutton said, quickly taking two steps forward.
"Yes!"
Daisy Shaw responded loudly and happily pulled Yvonne Sutton into a hug.
"The way our Yvonne says ’Mom’ is just so lovely. Oh, it melts my heart."
"Mom," Wyatt Shaw said as he walked in with his hands in his pockets, calling out as well. freёwebnoѵel.com
Daisy Shaw gave a casual response without even looking at Wyatt Shaw.
"Yvonne, come and sit," Daisy Shaw said, pulling Yvonne Sutton toward the living room.
"Mom, when are we eating? I’m starving," Wyatt Shaw called out from behind them.
"Shoo, shoo, go upstairs and find your father. Who knows what he’s tinkering with now; he’s been up there forever."
Wyatt Shaw pursed his lips. "Aren’t you afraid I’ll piss him off?"
"He’s your father. Piss him off all you want!"
Wyatt Shaw rolled his eyes and headed upstairs in resignation.
Daisy Shaw had Yvonne Sutton sit on the sofa. On the coffee table in front of them was a box of seafood, all prepared and arranged on small plates.
"What’s this?" Yvonne Sutton asked.
"This is tuna sashimi, caviar, geoduck, and tiger crab, just flown in from Kyoria," Mrs. Reed explained, listing each item. She finished by adding, "You’ve never had this before, have you?"
Yvonne Sutton had actually just wanted to ask why there was a box of seafood on the coffee table, since this wasn’t the dining table.
Daisy Shaw’s expression darkened, and she was about to berate Mrs. Reed when Yvonne Sutton cut in, "It’s a shame Mrs. Reed isn’t a waitress. She’s quite fluent when announcing dishes."
Daisy Shaw burst out laughing. Ignoring Mrs. Reed’s ugly expression, she added, "Mrs. Reed, see what good judgment my daughter-in-law has? She must not have known that you actually were a waitress when you were young. Announcing dishes was your specialty."
At this, Mrs. Reed’s face instantly darkened.
Yvonne Sutton covered her mouth with her hand. ’I really didn’t know. If I had, I wouldn’t have brought it up, if only to avoid insulting the entire service industry.’
"Oh, right. How did you say we should pair these for the best taste?" Daisy Shaw asked.
Mrs. Reed took a deep breath, plastered a smile back on her face, and bent down. She picked out a piece of tuna, placed it on a small plate, topped it with a spoonful of caviar, drizzled it with a special sauce, and then presented it to Daisy Shaw with both hands.
"Mrs. Rhodes, please try this. I had a top Kyorian chef prepare this sauce. It’s specially made to emphasize the freshness," Mrs. Reed said, fawning.
Daisy Shaw glanced at it. "It looks like good stuff."
"It certainly is. I had to pull some strings to get these top-tier ingredients."
"Let my daughter-in-law try it first. If she says it’s delicious, then it’s truly delicious."
Mrs. Reed was still bent at the waist, her face frozen. The hands holding the small plate began to tremble uncontrollably.
Yvonne Sutton knew Daisy Shaw was doing this to stick up for her, so she looked at Mrs. Reed and asked coolly, "Mrs. Reed, we’ve had dinner together a few times. You should know my tastes, right?"
Mrs. Reed clenched her jaw, composed herself, and said, "I might not be too clear on that."
"Is that so? Then I wouldn’t dare eat anything you’ve prepared."
"You..." Mrs. Reed took a deep breath. "You... You can’t eat spicy food, right?"
Yvonne Sutton smiled. "So you do know."
During the eight years she dated Vincent Reed, she wasn’t allowed to visit the Reed family’s main residence. But on the rare occasions Mrs. Reed came to the villa for dinner, she would instruct Ms. Young to cook a table full of spicy dishes.
And even though Vincent Reed knew she couldn’t eat it, he never cared. He would just eat by himself and later complain that she was being difficult.
Mrs. Reed’s hands trembled even more, presumably from anger. "Rest assured, there are no chili peppers in this."
Yvonne Sutton smiled, finally taking the small plate and having a bite.
"Is it edible?" Daisy Shaw asked.
Yvonne Sutton held back a laugh. Mrs. Reed had gone to such great lengths to procure this top-tier seafood, yet Daisy Shaw was asking if it was even edible.
"Uh, it’s alright."
"So, not that good then." Daisy Shaw pursed her lips. "Who eats sashimi this time of year anyway? It just makes your stomach feel cold. I made dumplings. We’re having dumplings tonight."
Yvonne Sutton nodded. "I love dumplings."
"Let me tell you, I learned how to make this ’three-delicacy’ filling from that kid Wyatt Shaw. And I have to say, it’s actually delicious."
"I’ve had the ’three-delicacy’ dumplings he makes?" freeweɓnovel.cѳm
"You have?"
So Yvonne Sutton told Daisy Shaw the story of how, when she was in medical school at Aethelgard U and Wyatt Shaw was working as a cook at The Lucky Spoon, she had ordered the dumplings he made.
Daisy Shaw’s eyes lit up as she listened. "That’s fate! You two are a match made in heaven!"
The two of them were chatting excitedly, leaving Mrs. Reed completely ignored to the side.
"Oh, my, it’s getting late. Mrs. Reed, I won’t keep you for dinner," Daisy Shaw said, directly shooing her away.
How could Mrs. Reed not see that Daisy Shaw was protecting Yvonne Sutton? Coming here was an exercise in self-humiliation, but she had no choice but to come.
"By the way, the birthday banquet for the wife of Aerolin Tech’s CEO is in a few days. Mrs. Rhodes, will you be attending?"
Daisy Shaw leaned back into the sofa and said casually, "I’m quite close with Mrs. Abbott. Of course I’m going."
"Have they sent you an invitation?"
"It was sent a while ago. You didn’t receive one?"
Mrs. Reed gave a dry laugh. "Mrs. Abbott must have forgotten."
"Is that so? I’ll give her a reminder then."
"Oh, that would be wonderful! In that case, may I go with you, Mrs. Rhodes?"
"That’s fine."
Regardless, Mrs. Reed had gotten what she wanted, and she left with a sigh of relief.
"These rich wives, they all stick together, flattering the powerful and trampling the weak. A couple of years ago, when the Reed Group’s business was booming, she was the one stepping on others. Now that the Reed Group is struggling, she’s the one being stepped on. Being stepped on is one thing, but Mrs. Abbott not even inviting her is tantamount to kicking her out of their circle. That’s why she’s so desperate."
After saying this, Daisy Shaw turned and took Yvonne Sutton’s hand. "I know you definitely don’t care for this sort of thing, so don’t worry. The Rhodes Group has a strong foundation. You can do whatever you want. Being happy is the most important thing."
"Thank you." Yvonne Sutton leaned over and gave Daisy Shaw a hug. ’She really thinks of everything for me.’
Just then, a commotion was heard from upstairs. Daisy Shaw couldn’t help but press her hand to her forehead. "Those two can’t be in the same room together. The moment they meet, the arguing never stops!"
Yvonne Sutton followed Daisy Shaw upstairs to the study on the second floor.
They heard Mr. Rhodes roar, "Don’t you worry, I’ll never be a bother to you! You won’t even have to care when I’m dead!"
Wyatt Shaw shot back, "Fine! When the time comes, you can climb into the coffin yourself!"
"You brat! Get out!"
"I’m leaving! I can’t be bothered to argue with you!"
Daisy Shaw blocked the doorway and shouted at the two inside, "If you’re both going to get out, then get out! Don’t ruin my and Yvonne’s appetite!"
After she yelled, the father and son both fell silent.
Wyatt Shaw, who had been about to walk out, sheepishly rubbed his nose and didn’t dare leave.
"It’s his fault. He said he felt dizzy, so I suggested checking his blood pressure. It was really high. He said he’d already taken his medication. I said we should go to the hospital, he said no. I insisted we had to go, and he told me I could get out." Wyatt Shaw spread his hands. "So, you tell me, whose fault is it?"
"It’s both your faults for being stubborn mules," Daisy Shaw said irritably.
"Let me take a look," Yvonne Sutton said from behind them.
The moment she spoke, all three family members turned to look at her.
Daisy Shaw slapped her forehead. "Oh, how could I forget? Our family married a doctor!"
