Chapter 50: Chapter 50
Yvonne Sutton clenched her fists, but when she saw the smug look on Vincent Reed’s face, she relaxed them again.
"What reaction were you expecting from me? To burst into tears? To beg you? To regret not becoming your mistress?"
Yvonne Sutton shook her head. "None of that would work, would it?"
Vincent Reed gritted his teeth. "We just broke up, and you’re already married to someone else. Didn’t you love me? For eight years? Is this what you call love?"
"Vincent Reed, are you out of your mind? You can marry Wendy Winters, but I can’t marry someone else?"
"I didn’t approve!"
"Who do you think you are? Why on earth would I need your approval!"
"Heh." Vincent Reed suddenly sneered. "You never really loved me that much, did you? During those eight years, you must have been wanting to break up with me for a long time. Maybe you started scouting for other men before we even broke up. Oh, right. Wyatt Shaw. You two hooked up a long time ago, didn’t you?"
"You think Wyatt Shaw married you because he loves you? Ha! Let me tell you, he only married you to show off to me! He’s always been like this, never satisfied unless he one-ups me in everything! But this time, he’s wrong. He thinks it’s some great achievement to marry my woman, but you’re just the trash I threw away!"
"Vincent Reed, are you even listening to yourself?" Yvonne was so speechless she wanted to laugh. "Don’t you think what you’re saying is ridiculous? Don’t you realize you’ve become a joke yourself?"
Vincent Reed glared at Yvonne. "You’re the one who wronged me, and I’ll make you regret it!"
Yvonne truly couldn’t comprehend Vincent Reed’s train of thought. She decided to just ignore him and turned to walk home.
Back in her bedroom, she first called her aunt.
The reception on her aunt’s end was bad. "Yvonne, don’t worry about us! We’re on an island vacation with Rhodes. We’re finding so much seafood right on the beach! Quick, quick, grab that big crab!"
Rhodes’s voice came through the phone. "I’m this old, and you’re still ordering me around!"
"You were plenty spry when you were stealing corn from my garden!"
"When did I ever steal your corn? I was just having a little taste!"
"Then I’ll go ’have a taste’ of your peanuts later!"
"No way! I need to sell those for money!"
After they bickered for a bit, Rhodes took the phone.
"Yvonne, don’t worry about your aunt and uncle. They’ll be having fun with me out here for a few more days before heading back."
"Grandma, thank you," Yvonne said sincerely.
"Don’t be silly, we’re family. By the way, that boy Wyatt Shaw can be a real fool sometimes. If he gets out of line, you just tell me, and I’ll beat him up for you."
Yvonne laughed. "Okay. With Grandma to back me up, I’m not afraid of him!"
"That’s right! We’re not afraid of anyone!"
She had just hung up with Rhodes when Mina Adler called.
"Yvonne, quick, look at what’s trending! The entire internet is waiting for Wendy Winters to eat her words!"
Yvonne hung up and went online. Sure enough, she saw a trending topic: #WaitingForWendyWintersToEatHerWords.
She clicked on it. It turned out that after Wendy Winters’s fans had caused a scene at her house yesterday, Wendy had publicly declared that if Yvonne Sutton held her wedding at Cloudsea Castle, she would slap her own face.
’There were a lot of people there at the time, but they were all Wendy Winters’s fans. Surely her own fans wouldn’t try to harm her, right?’
She texted Mina Adler: "You didn’t post this online, did you?"
Mina sent an emoji of a person wiping away cold sweat. "I blame myself for not thinking of it at the time! I didn’t record it."
She then asked Claire Lawrence, but Claire hadn’t recorded a video either. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
If it wasn’t them, then it must have been one of Wendy Winters’s fans. Yvonne figured they were probably a genuine fan before, but after yesterday, they’d turned into a hater.
Following that video, there was another one from Cloudsea Castle showing Vincent Reed and Wendy Winters having a complete meltdown.
The comments below were spectacular. People were saying they’d never seen such a hilarious couple, slapping their own faces so loudly that the whole internet could hear it, turning themselves into a public laughingstock.
Because public perception of her had soured, many people started digging up dirt on her. Past incidents were all dredged up: her diva behavior and bullying of newcomers, her terrible acting that her team tried to scrub from the internet, and her habit of letting her staff sabotage other artists.
Her rumored affair with Stanley Lynch was also brought up again, with many speculating that the baby in Wendy Winters’s belly was actually his.
Just as the PR crisis was about to spiral out of control, Wendy Winters’s team hastily issued a statement and even sued a few netizens. With what was likely some maneuvering by the Reed Group behind the scenes, the storm finally began to calm down a little.
Yvonne wasn’t actually concerned about the online drama. Her mind was entirely occupied with what Vincent Reed had said about demolishing the old house. She wanted to go see it, but she knew she couldn’t stop him. It would be pointless to go.
Besides, if she showed any hint of sadness or grief, Vincent Reed would just gloat.
’Mom, the biggest mistake I ever made in my life was falling in love with a man who didn’t love me, giving him my heart, and even selling your and Dad’s house for him. I’ve failed you and Dad.’
Yvonne pressed a hand to her forehead, so full of regret she wanted to crawl into a hole.
Wyatt Shaw returned before noon. By then, Yvonne had already composed herself.
"Come on, I’m taking you somewhere," Wyatt Shaw said, his face alight with excitement.
Although Yvonne wasn’t in the mood, she didn’t refuse.
Once they were in the car, Wyatt wrapped an arm around her and gave her a kiss. "I have a surprise for you."
"What kind of surprise?"
"You’ll know in a bit, but for now, you have to close your eyes."
Seeing the look of anticipation on Wyatt Shaw’s face, Yvonne had no choice but to close her eyes.
The car started and drove for a long time. Just as Yvonne was about to doze off, the car finally stopped.
"Can I open my eyes now?"
"Not yet. We still have to walk a little further."
Wyatt got out first, then walked around to the passenger side to help her out of the car. He then took her hand and led her forward.
The path underfoot was uneven, and Yvonne’s steps were unsteady.
"Where on earth are you taking me?"
"We’re here."
Yvonne was about to open her eyes, but Wyatt covered them with his hand.
"Still can’t open them?"
"This is the surprise."
He placed something cool against her lips.
"What is it?"
Wyatt then removed his hand, and Yvonne opened her eyes to see a bright red pomegranate right in front of her.
She looked at Wyatt in confusion. "Your surprise is a pomegranate?"
"Pomegranates represent the blessing of many children and good fortune. Isn’t that a surprise?" Wyatt Shaw raised an eyebrow.
Yvonne gave a dry laugh. "So, why did we have to drive all this way to buy one pomegranate? Are there none near our house?"
"There really aren’t any near our house."
"A single pomegranate?" ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
"A pomegranate from this tree."
As he spoke, he put an arm around her and turned her around. "Look. This tree only grows right here."
