Chapter 46: Chapter 46: The Rhodes Group’s Crown Prince
Daisy Shaw is the wife of the Rhodes Group’s CEO, which means her son is The Rhodes Group’s Crown Prince.
Yvonne Sutton clasped a hand over her mouth. She had guessed Wyatt Shaw’s background was significant, but she never imagined he was the heir to the Rhodes Group. The Rhodes Group! A family ranked among the top ten most influential in the world.
"But your last name is Shaw..." freewebnoveℓ.com
"My name used to be Wyatt Rhodes. I was always sick as a kid, so my mom had a fortune-teller look at my chart. They said the name was astrologically incompatible with me or something, so she had me take her surname, Shaw."
Yvonne Sutton was speechless. ’So my aunt said she’d introduce me to a steady, hardworking young man, and she sets me up with the Crown Prince of the Rhodes Group!’
And then there was Rhodes. Her aunt would occasionally complain to her, "That old lady is so cheap, always trying to get one over on people."
"Is the pomegranate sweet?"
"Huh?"
Wyatt Shaw glanced at the pomegranate in her hand. "Let me have a taste."
Yvonne Sutton looked down at the pomegranate in her hand, remembering how Wyatt Shaw had been leaning against the guard booth, chatting with the security guard just moments ago. ’He’s just so...unpretentious,’ she thought.
She broke open the pomegranate. The seeds inside were large and ruby-red. She pried a few loose and fed them to Wyatt Shaw.
"Mm, it’s pretty sweet. You try some."
Yvonne Sutton ate a couple, and they were indeed quite sweet.
"Yvonne, nothing is going to change," Wyatt Shaw said suddenly.
"What?" Yvonne Sutton asked.
Wyatt Shaw squeezed her hand. "I meant what I said before. I want to build a good life with you."
Yvonne Sutton smiled. When she dated Vincent Reed, she had always felt like she was treading on unsteady ground, never able to find a firm footing. But with Wyatt Shaw, her heart was always at ease, and she could clearly envision their future.
’Isn’t this the kind of life I’ve been looking for? There’s really nothing to be conflicted about.’
「After a three-hour drive, they arrived in town.」
Rhodes had moved here to retire three years ago. By then, Yvonne Sutton had already started her hospital internship and was too busy to visit, so her aunt and uncle would travel to Aethelgard to see her instead. As a result, she had never met Rhodes.
The car pulled up in front of the houses. They were right next to each other, but both were locked up.
Yvonne Sutton had tried calling her aunt and uncle on the way, but the calls wouldn’t connect. She tried again now with the same result. Wyatt Shaw called his grandmother, but couldn’t get through either.
"Oh, isn’t that Yvonne? I thought you were about to get married. What brings you back?"
A woman passing by recognized Yvonne.
Yvonne Sutton quickly greeted the woman and explained that she was here to pick up her aunt and uncle to take them to Aethelgard for her wedding.
"Oh, they and Rhodes left early this morning! They said they were heading to the city for your wedding. You mean you didn’t see them?"
Hearing this, Yvonne Sutton quickly looked at Wyatt Shaw.
Wyatt Shaw frowned. "They left early this morning. They’ve probably reached Aethelgard by now."
"But how come we can’t get in touch with them?"
"Let’s head back first. We’ll figure something out on the way."
The two frantically got back in the car. Wyatt Shaw called home; Rhodes hadn’t returned, and the family had already started looking for her.
Just as they entered Aethelgard, they got a call from the police station.
Arriving at the police station, they ran into Daisy Shaw, who had also rushed over.
"Yvonne, don’t panic. I’ve already spoken with the officers. They’re all okay."
Daisy Shaw took Yvonne Sutton’s hand. ’We used to be a fan and her idol; now we’re daughter-in-law and mother-in-law.’ She was still having trouble adjusting to the change.
"You must have been terrified, huh?"
"I’m all right."
Daisy Shaw pulled her inside. "This was definitely Wyatt’s grandmother’s idea. That old woman can’t sit still. She’s not happy unless she’s causing some kind of trouble."
"Were you scared, too?"
"Not really. She may be old, but she’s as sharp as a tack. I knew she’d be fine."
Daisy Shaw held onto Yvonne Sutton, completely ignoring Wyatt Shaw.
Inside the police station, the trio was sitting in a neat row on a long bench, being interviewed by an officer.
Her aunt and uncle were honest, simple country folk. It was the first time they’d encountered something like this, and they were still flustered and scared.
Rhodes, despite her graying hair, was full of spirit, lucidly recounting the details of the scam.
"The young woman’s leg looked like it was really hurt. We figured we’d give her a lift so she could catch a taxi, but who knew she’d lead us to a deserted spot? All of a sudden, a few able-bodied young men rushed out and snatched all our bags. You see? No good deed goes unpunished. To think a young girl would be in on a robbery."
"How much cash was in your bag?"
"Not much. Just thirty thousand. Theirs didn’t have much either, only twenty thousand."
"Why didn’t you keep it in the bank?"
"We were coming to the city for the wedding. It’s gift money; it has to be cash."
Yvonne Sutton and the others walked over just as the police officer was finishing up his questions.
"Uncle, Aunt!" Yvonne Sutton called to them.
Seeing Yvonne, the couple immediately stood and walked over to her.
"Yvonne, you’re finally here! Your aunt and I were scared to death."
Meanwhile, Daisy Shaw and Rhodes had started bickering the moment they saw each other.
"I’m not some useless old woman. Why should I have to wait for you to come get me?"
"If you’re so capable, then how did you manage to get scammed?"
"I don’t like the sound of your voice."
"That’s because you know you’re in the wrong."
Rhodes ignored Daisy Shaw, grabbing Wyatt Shaw and telling him to introduce her to his fiancée.
"So this is Yvonne. Look, she’s even prettier than in her picture."
Rhodes looked at Yvonne Sutton, pleased. Yvonne called out, "Grandma." The word made the old woman’s face light up. She immediately slipped the Jade Bracelet from her own wrist and put it onto Yvonne’s.
"I can’t accept this," Yvonne said, trying to refuse. But Wyatt Shaw stopped her. "Grandma’s giving it to you, so just take it. She has plenty of other nice things."
"Right, it’ll all be yours in the future."
Rhodes looked at Yvonne Sutton, and the more she looked, the more she liked her.
"I’m the one who picked this granddaughter-in-law, you know!" she declared proudly.
Daisy Shaw liked her too. "Looks like your judgment was sound for once."
"If you can’t talk properly, then shut your mouth!"
Meanwhile, Yvonne’s aunt and uncle were looking at Wyatt Shaw with approval. "You two are already legally married, aren’t you? Our Yvonne has such a kind heart, she’s easy to take advantage of. You’d better not bully her in the future."
"I promise I wouldn’t dare," Wyatt Shaw said.
"That’s good. Her father passed away not long after she was born, and her mother passed away when she was in high school. It’s not easy for her to be on her own. You have to take good care of her."
"Uncle, Aunt, rest assured. I will take very good care of her."
Her aunt and uncle nodded again and again. "He’s a good kid. You can tell just by looking at him that he’s honest and dependable."
As they were walking out, the uncle kept glancing over at Daisy Shaw.
"What are you staring at?" his wife asked, giving him a pinch.
"Take a look, doesn’t Wyatt Shaw’s mother look a bit familiar?"
"Now that you mention it... City folks really are different. She has such an elegant air about her. Hey, doesn’t she look like that movie star... what’s her name again?"
"Daisy Shaw!"
"Yes, that’s her!"
Back at the villa, after Yvonne Sutton explained Wyatt Shaw’s family background to them, her aunt and uncle were dumbfounded.
"When Rhodes proposed this marriage, she never said anything about his family’s background! She just said that boy Wyatt did well in school and was very capable. I was thinking our families were a good match, status-wise, and that the two of you could just support each other and have a good life."
It finally dawned on the aunt. She slapped her thigh. "That old lady tricked us again!"
