Chapter 43: Chapter 43 You’re Already Engaged
Sylvia’s POV
The project manager just sent me a file as I was about to drive away. They wanted me to reorganize a new document based on market conditions. With one quick glance, I realized I’d already researched and compiled this exact information.
Unfortunately, that document was sitting in my old room back at the Frostfang Pack house.
I sighed deeply, my wolf stirring restlessly beneath my skin. I’d have to go back—no way was I wasting time recreating something I’d already done. Checking the time, I calculated that Alpha Astra, my mother, likely wouldn’t be home yet.
Perfect. I could get in and out quickly.
I expertly maneuvered my car into the high-end estate, parking with practiced ease in the garage. Sunlight poured across the driveway, and the mansion stood eerily quiet.
My wolf’s senses prickled with suspicion. Where was Selene? Wasn’t my sister supposed to be resting at home due to her "delicate constitution"?
Puzzled, I approached the main entrance. As I unlocked and pushed open the door, I found Alpha Hugo sprawled across the living room sofa.
His face was flushed, eyes unfocused—clearly intoxicated. Or pretending to be.
"What are you doing here?" I demanded, my earlier mission forgotten. Seeing him like this killed any motivation to stay longer than necessary. I wanted to grab my file and leave.
Hearing my voice, he slowly opened his eyes. Upon recognizing me, he stood up, swaying on his feet.
Yet despite his unsteady gait, his movements were purposeful as he walked straight toward me.
My wolf growled a warning inside me. "What do you think you’re doing?" I asked, backing away until I felt the wall behind me.
"Sivi..." he murmured my name softly, closing the distance between us.
I had nowhere left to retreat. "Alpha Hugo," I said coldly, "given our current relationship, don’t you think addressing me so intimately is inappropriate?"
His glazed eyes seemed to clear slightly at my words.
Seeing my chance, I ducked low, attempting to slip past him.
Despite his apparent drunkenness, Hugo moved with surprising speed, wrapping his arms around my waist and nestling his chin in the crook of my neck. My wolf recoiled at his touch, sensing the wrongness of it.
"Sylvia, please listen to me. Give me a chance, won’t you?" His breath reeked of whiskey, but his grip was too coordinated for someone truly inebriated.
"Let me go!" I demanded, my Alpha nature fighting to break free from years of suppression. "This is disgusting. Have you forgotten about my sister?"
At the mention of Selene, something dark flickered in his eyes.
He tightened his hold, pulling me against him. "But you and I were the ones with the original engagement. Sylvia, I’ve always had feelings for you..."
His words made my skin crawl. I intensified my struggle, but the physical strength difference between us was too great, especially with him fueled by alcohol—real or feigned. freēwēbnovel.com
"Hugo, if Selene finds out about this, she’ll never forgive you," I warned, staring at his flushed face with disgust churning in my stomach. "You’re engaged to her. You made vows to the Moon Goddess together. How could you betray that?"
His body tensed, but his grip didn’t loosen one bit.
"Sylvia, can we not talk about her right now?" By now, Hugo seemed completely fixated on me, his inhibitions seemingly gone.
I could feel his wolf responding to mine, despite my efforts to suppress my true nature. The faint rose scent I carefully cultivated as part of my Omega disguise was having its intended effect—but on the wrong man, at the wrong time.
"Sylvia, give me a chance," Hugo’s eyes held a disturbing sincerity. "If you’re willing, we can be together again. Don’t worry, I can still accept you back."
His grip tightened, ignoring all my protests.
Left with no choice, I stomped hard on his foot. He winced but remained determined.
"Sylvia, I’m serious..." he insisted.
"What the hell is going on here?"
A familiar female voice, sharp with anger, cut through the room.
We both turned to see Selene standing beside Alpha Astra—my mother. They must have returned together.
My mother had spoken, her voice filled with fury, while Selene stood beside her, eyes already red with unshed tears. She maintained perfect posture—the picture of a wounded innocent.
My heart raced with alarm. I mustered my strength and shoved Hugo away.
This time, he didn’t resist, allowing himself to be pushed back with suspicious ease.
Even if I’d been blind before, Hugo’s intentions were now crystal clear. He’d only been pretending to be drunk.
I glared at him, my voice dripping with scorn. "Well played, Hugo Gray."
Alpha Astra’s chest heaved with rage. "Sylvia, even now—caught red-handed—you continue with this disgraceful behavior?"
I couldn’t help but defend myself. "Mom, you’re accusing me without even asking what happened! Hugo was the one blocking me, preventing me from leaving!"
"Why don’t you investigate before throwing around accusations?"
Meeting my cold stare, Alpha Astra took several deep breaths, struggling to control herself. "You... you rebellious little lunatic."
"Mother, please calm down," Selene interjected, patting Alpha Astra’s back soothingly. Her voice cracked with emotion. "There must be... some misunderstanding between them..."
By the end, she sounded ready to burst into tears.
What a perfect daughter—walking in on her sister with her fiancé, yet still trying to be the peacemaker.
Suddenly, Hugo spoke up. "Selene, this is my fault."
His words drew all three women’s attention. Even I couldn’t help but look at him in surprise.
"Hugo, how could you..." Selene choked out.
But in the next moment, Hugo’s face filled with contrition. "It’s my fault for drinking today. I was lying on the sofa, not fully conscious."
The moment I heard those words, my wolf sensed the trap closing around me.
Sure enough, he continued, "I never expected Sylvia to approach me, saying all sorts of things, blaming Selene for stealing our engagement."
Hugo looked up, his eyes slightly reddened, the picture of innocence.
He turned to my mother. "Aunt Astra, it’s my mistake. I should have shown more restraint. But my feelings for Selene are genuine. Even without Sylvia in the picture, I would still choose to be with Selene."
"Hugo..." Selene gazed at him adoringly, their mutual understanding making me the obvious villain in this little drama.
My face darkened. Of course this man wouldn’t tell the truth. What had I expected?
"Alpha Hugo," I stared directly at him, my gaze intense enough to make a lesser wolf cower. "Are you certain that’s the truth?"
Hugo avoided my eyes, unwilling to meet my stare. "Of course. Selene and I have always had a stable relationship. Why would I abandon her for you?"
