Chapter 99: This Is Bad
Anna’s expression changed, but she accepted the truth about it being epic much more easily since she already had an inkling about it. The thing that shocked her was the upgradable section. This meant that the bow was upgradable. In the end, she sighed and threw the bow back to Lukas.
"How did you get that? By any chance, did you kill a level three D-beast while being level one or something?"
Lukas shook his head. Although that might be a way to get it if your luck was good and you were strong enough to do so.
"Well, let’s just say I was lucky enough to get it. By the way, keep this a secret for me."
He didn’t know if they were trustworthy or not, but he didn’t care anyway. The reason he was doing all this was to deepen their bond. It might affect Leah’s decision later or it might not, he didn’t know, but it was better to try. This special bundle was too important for him, since there was a high chance of getting a system upgrade, which would finally let him earn more LP.
"Alright, you can trust us. Seriously, I feel like you can roam this world even alone, maybe even reach those promised cities, if they exist at all."
Lukas had heard about these promised cities Anna was referring to.
Before the internet was gone, most of the first evolvers tried to gather up and take over a city to make it safe enough to live in.
Lukas didn’t know how successful this plan had been, as there was definitely no such city nearby, or they would have found this military base by now.
Anna suddenly had an enlightenment.
"Wait a second, so this is why you were confident in assassinating that level four Dead Walker if Leon failed."
"Heh... you can say that." Lukas chuckled lightly.
Anna felt that he was hiding something else, and after seeing everything from him until now, she wouldn’t be surprised if it were true. It was just that she couldn’t imagine what else he could be hiding.
"Can you share some important knowledge with us that would be helpful in the long run?"
This time, Leah asked. Her mind was still occupied with the thought of the lightning orb she had seen in Lukas’ hand.
Deep inside, she knew that if she missed this chance, then she might have to wait forever to get her hands on a skill.
"Well, you guys must have already figured out that Dead Walkers can level up faster than humans, so the only option for us to catch up to them is skills and weapons." frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
Anna and Leah were listening very keenly, and when they felt him stress the part about skills, both of them rolled their eyes.
It was obvious what he intended them to focus on.
"Although you said it just because you want to sell your skill orb, it is quite true. We need strength to survive." Anna agreed, as she knew very well how necessary skills were in battle.
She hoped that Leah would get one too. Who knew what might happen? The military camp seemed quite sturdy, but what if a level five Dead Walker was born? Would they be able to survive? It was hard to say.
They might have to run for their lives, and at that time no one would care about others. They would think about surviving first.
In this type of scenario, the weaker ones who depended on others would die first.
That’s why skills were a must, and Anna hoped that somehow Leah would get one soon.
Leah felt that Anna wanted her to accept Lukas’ offer.
"Miss Anna, you understand it very well." Lukas complimented Anna. "If you are weak, then you shouldn’t cling to morals, or you will just be a burden to everyone."
This last sentence made Leah flinch slightly, while Anna got dumbfounded as those words were very sharp. Nonetheless, it was the truth no matter how much she or Leah denied it.
"Do you know why I brought up the topic of Dead Walkers evolving faster?" Lukas spoke in an innocent voice.
"Oh, so there is a proper reason, huh?" Anna smirked slightly. "Alright, let’s hear it."
Lukas smiled.
"You see, there is another way to evolve without absorbing evolution crystals."
Leah and Anna frowned.
"It is to consume evolved meat." Lukas smiled. "If you consume enough evolved meat, then you might collect enough essence equivalent to one crystal of your level."
He had felt the impact of evolved meat himself and had deduced this.
"Really?"
Anna was a little skeptical, but Lukas nodded.
"You can try that later. What I mean is that Dead Walkers can do the same. So tell me, who has better access to evolved meat?"
Leah and Anna stopped moving. They both came to the same conclusion, Dead Walkers, especially the level four one.
If what Lukas said was really true, then wouldn’t going outside the base become even more dangerous in a few days?
"Of course, the effect of lower-level evolved meat is far weaker than an evolution crystal of the same level, so don’t worry too much about the level four Dead Walker. But the real problem will arrive if it becomes sentient enough to make other Dead Walkers evolve, and after they reach level four... you know what I mean, right?"
Leah and Anna’s expressions changed for the worse.
"T-This is bad..."
"Indeed it is. That’s why don’t believe that you are safe. The military base is indeed strong enough to hold the defense for some time, but when these Dead Walkers become conscious enough, they will definitely surround it, and then all paths of retreat will be gone.
They will keep getting stronger, and we will stay weak. Then there will come a time when they can easily break in. The rest will be history."
Anna and Leah trembled inwardly in fear while thinking about that. They had thought Lukas would keep joking around to make Leah agree to get the skill, but he had just told them about a hidden danger they hadn’t been able to see.
"T-there must be some solution, right? Or are we really just waiting to die?" Anna said in a low tone.
