Chapter 71: The Hickey, The Question, And Dominic’s Very Bad Evening!

After the training hours were over, Lev watched Dominic come in through the cell door. He was pounding his fist on his legs. He was tired after running around the field, thanks to Cullen and that damn Oren. He had never been treated that roughly in his life. He had always had whatever he wanted one way or the other.

Dominic had a towel around his neck and his hair was still damp. He was frowning so hard that he threw the towel onto his bed. He had gone to the training field early just so he could see Ruaan and maybe spend time with him but due to the rank, he didn’t even get to see him. But there were so many men around him. He has been away from Ruaan for just three weeks and there are so many people hanging around him already.

"That little slut," Dominic said.

Lev tilted his head from where he was sitting on his own bed. "Slut? Are you talking about Ruaan?"

Dominic turned. He registered Lev and said nothing for a second. Then, "You’ve seen what he’s been up to, haven’t you? I’m sure you’ve noticed all those people around him."

Lev stood up.

He crossed the small cell and came around to Dominic’s front and wrapped one arm around him from behind before Dominic had fully processed the movement. He put his chin on Dominic’s shoulder.

"You mean the fact that he’s become everyone’s property?" Lev said. He kissed the side of Dominic’s neck once, easy and unbothered. "I know." He laughed low. "I fucking know it already, Dominic."

Dominic didn’t react to the kiss which made Lev continue. His hand started sliding down from Dominic’s chest.

Dominic caught his wrist.

"I can take whatever else you want to do to me," Dominic said. "But I can’t sleep with you, Lev."

"Why not?"

"Because I’m still Ruaan’s fiancé."

Lev stepped around to face him.

He sat on the edge of Dominic’s bed and crossed his legs and looked up at him, amused like someone who had just received a funny joke.

"His fiancé," Lev said. "Does he know we slept together last year?"

"That was a mistake. You fucking know that!" Dominic said. His voice had gone flat. "You drugged me."

"I did," Lev agreed. "It was the only way to get anywhere near you. You were too focused on Ruaan." He stretched both arms above his head. "Besides, he never let you touch him, so I thought you deserved an outlet."

Dominic pressed his mouth shut. He could still remember that day vividly, as if it were replaying in the corner of his head. He knew that Ruaan and Lev weren’t particularly close and he had avoided Lev just so he wouldn’t get on Ruaan’s bad side, but Lev decided to use another way.

The third cellmate came in.

He always came in quietly. Lev had noticed this about him since day one. He entered spaces without announcing himself. He was shirtless now, still damp from the shower, and Lev’s eyes moved to the tattoo along his side automatically. Dark ink, curving. He turned before Lev could read it and moved to his corner of the cell.

Dominic snapped his fingers in front of Lev’s face.

Lev looked back at him.

"We need to figure out how to get Ruaan back," Dominic said.

"You need to get Ruaan back," Lev said. "I don’t need Ruaan. I need that officer." He paused to let it land. "Harolin Crowe. Have you seen him? The man is built like something that should be illegal and he walks around this facility like he owns it which, apparently, he basically does." He smiled. "I’m going to have him."

"Then let’s help each other," Dominic suggested.

"Help? I’m sure Ruaan had slept with him already, so it’s going to be difficult."

The colour that went across Dominic’s face was immediate and specific.

"Ruaan would never sleep with a man," Dominic said. "He’s been scared his entire life. He never let me touch him."

"If you’re so sure," Lev said, "why don’t you ask him. Or ask Harolin directly. I thought you two were close. He warned you off Ruaan the first day."

Dominic said nothing.

"Something happened, right?" Lev said, watching his face. "Between you and Harolin. Before all this." He tilted his head. "You helped him, didn’t you? That’s why Ruaan is in here."

Dominic stood up. "Don’t worry about what happened between Harolin and me. The point is Ruaan."

"The point," Lev said, "is that you’re jealous of a man Ruaan may or may not have slept with and you can’t ask directly because you arranged to have him arrested." He stood. "Very complicated situation, Dominic."

Dominic looked at the wall, trying to hide the annoyance on his face.

Lev looked at the third cellmate’s back again.

He thought about what he knew about Ruaan and intimacy. Ruaan had never let his partners touch him since day one. Lev was sure about that, after all, that’s how Lev stole all of Ruaan’s partners. He would find out what Ruaan wasn’t giving them. Offer it instead. Wait for them to come to him on their own. It was easy. After all, they were all sex-starved and also, there was no way they were going to say no to someone like him.

But if Ruaan had actually given someone everything.

If Harolin had gotten what nobody else had gotten.

Then the strategy needed to change.

’If Ruaan has already slept with Harolin,’ Lev thought, ’then stealing partners won’t work. I’ll have to approach this from a different angle. But I can’t think of any angle right now. Fuck! I hate working hard to get someone.’

He filed it away and said nothing.

Harolin was finishing instructions to a lower-ranking officer when Dominic found him. He waited for Harolin to finish what he was saying.

The officer saluted and left. Harolin turned.

He looked at Dominic in the corridor with a flat and bored expression like he had no time to talk to him.

"Dinner is happening," Harolin said. "Why are you here?"

"I have just one question," Dominic said. "It won’t take long."

"I have an investigation running and three pending reports." Harolin looked at him. "Is this question important enough to interrupt that?"

"Yes," Dominic said as he stepped closer. "It is super important."

"Have you slept with Ruaan?" Dominic said. "Has he actually let you touch him? I mean, have you two fucked?"

Harolin almost laughed out loud but he controlled it. Though something moved through his expression that was the compressed version of a laugh.

"That’s the urgent question you had for me," Harolin said.

"I dated him for two years and he never let me touch him." Dominic’s voice had gone tight and frustrated. "Two years. And you’ve been here with him for three weeks. So I want to know."

"You want to know if you’ve been replaced," Harolin said.

Dominic said nothing.

Harolin reached forward and tapped his shoulder twice enough to be condescending about it.

"If you wish to know the answer, find Ruaan," Harolin said. "Check his neck. You’ll have your answer."

He tapped the shoulder again.

"And eat something, Dominic. You’ll need the energy."

He walked away. Dominic watched him leave and clenched his fist.

’Find Ruaan? I’ll find him alright!’

Dominic found the VIP cafeteria by following the sound of a television.

He pushed the door open.

The room was warm and large and considerably more comfortable than anything he had encountered in his three days here. He registered it for approximately two seconds before he found Ruaan.

Sitting at the table in his black uniform. A glass of juice was in front of him. Looking at the TV with the relaxed expression of someone who had decided the evening was going to be calm.

Dominic crossed the room, blocking Ruaan’s vision.

Ruaan raised a brow and drowned. "Why are you here?"

"I want to check something," Dominic said.

"Huh? Check what?" Ruaan asked but without waiting, Dominic grabbed Ruaan’s face before Ruaan could move, both hands on his jaw, and tilted his head sideways.

There.

On the side of his neck, just below the jaw. A mark was visible. It was obviously a kiss mark.

Ruaan shoved him away with both hands. Hard.

"Get off me," Ruaan said.

Dominic looked at him, at the mark and the black uniform. He even noticed the easy way Ruaan had been sitting when he walked in, like someone who had nothing to be tense about.

"You let him," Dominic said. His voice came out strange and lower than usual. "After your whole life being scared. You just let Harolin—"

"What I do is none of your concern," Ruaan said. He was already standing up.

"You chose him." Dominic’s voice got tighter. "After being a virgin your whole life, you let him screw you. Didn’t you? Ruaan?"

Ruaan went very still.

His expression did not change. But behind his eyes, something was moving fast.

’Fuck,’ he thought. ’This bastard.’
