Chapter 161: Chapter 160: Eavesdropping

Upon hearing Mu Lianhui’s voice, Mu Lianxiao was momentarily stunned.

Du Yunluo was pondering the identity of another person when she heard another voice come through.

"Was Lady looking for me?" The voice was clear as spring water, belonging to Princess Nanyan.

Du Yunluo frowned.

Before the Weituo Heavenly Bodhisattva, Princess Nanyan slowly stood up, turned around to face the sunlight outside, and looked at the smiling Mu Lianhui. She said lightly, "Lady, were you looking for me to worship the Bodhisattva together?"

Mu Lianhui chuckled softly, lifting her eyes to the exquisite Buddha, and said, "What did Prince Rui say to you just now in the main hall?"

Princess Nanyan’s lips pressed heavily together, unwilling to answer, but seeing Mu Lianhui smile effortlessly, her attitude exceptionally firm, she couldn’t help but let out a long sigh.

The sound of sighing lingered in the empty Heavenly King Hall, making Princess Nanyan seem even more helpless and powerless.

She said, "Lady, I mentioned earlier that many things are beyond my control. Most of your wishes have been fulfilled; you don’t need to do anything else, just wait quietly, right?"

Mu Lianhui’s eyes darkened, noticing strands of hair falling from Princess Nanyan’s bun. She reached out, gently hooking them with her fingertips and coiled them around her finger before tucking them behind Nanyan’s ear as she tried to retreat.

"My wish?" Mu Lianhui laughed, a deep chuckle. "Yes, I just have to wait, and then I won’t have to marry Prince Rui. Isn’t that what you wanted as well?"

Princess Nanyan felt a chill behind her as she contemplated the words, suddenly feeling a bit horrified. "You... Lady, is this really what you think? You have quite an ambitious heart."

Mu Lianhui scoffed, taking a step forward to confront Princess Nanyan.

Their heights were nearly identical, and facing each other, their eyes met.

Mu Lianhui’s eyes were full of mockery, biting her words out one by one. "Ambitious heart? Princess, are you just someone who lets others point you east and throw you west?"

"Lady, haven’t we only had a few encounters since childhood? How do your words seem as though you understand my nature? I think we are far from being that familiar." Princess Nanyan’s tone was calm and unperturbed, as if she didn’t care about Mu Lianhui’s words at all.

Mu Lianhui coldly stared at Nanyan, her shoulders drooping after a long pause, and sighed. "Yes, I always thought I understood you, and then realized I was wrong."

Princess Nanyan stepped back cautiously, avoiding the cushion behind her, creating some distance from Mu Lianhui, and said, "I know your thoughts, but both of us have lost control now. The Empress Dowager makes the decisions, and Prince Rui speaks for us. There’s no use in talking it over with me."

Mu Lianhui raised an eyebrow, leaning casually against a pillar too large for anyone to embrace, and said, "You missed one person; you’re the Princess’s reader. How will she speak with the Empress Dowager?"

When Princess Yunhua was mentioned, Princess Nanyan’s brow furrowed deeply. "The Princess is straightforward; what she likes or dislikes is all written on her face. Her meaning when inviting Miss Du into the carriage today was clear."

"You don’t fear these words reaching the Princess’s ears." Mu Lianhui laughed.

"No," Princess Nanyan smiled faintly, "as long as you don’t speak, she won’t know. This is the Heavenly King Hall; the Princess dislikes the four Heavenly King Statues and won’t come here."

Mu Lianhui remained silent.

"Lady," Princess Nanyan looked up at the sky outside the hall as a row of geese flew past, "one shouldn’t be too greedy, lest you grasp sesame and lose watermelon. Lady, you’re wise; you should understand my words."

"You!" Mu Lianhui was shocked, unable to believe, as she looked at Princess Nanyan.

Previously, no matter how she sought a conversation with Princess Nanyan, the latter would deflect and evade. Even just now, their exchange was mixed with truth and untruth. Therefore, Mu Lianhui didn’t expect Princess Nanyan to suddenly say such a thing.

The words were like a knife stabbing directly into her heart.

What was sesame and what was watermelon? After speaking for a long time with Nanyan, she obviously understood.

Suddenly caught off guard, Mu Lianhui felt annoyed, her heart filled with anger she couldn’t vent, she glared at Princess Nanyan, flung her sleeves heavily, and turned to leave.

Princess Nanyan watched her walk away and gradually relax her tense spirit.

Pow—

A crisp sound suddenly resounded in the silent hall.

Princess Nanyan’s face instantly lost color, as she looked toward the source of the sound. It came from behind the Heavenly King Statue, where the already dim light was further obscured by the tall statue. Without approaching, she couldn’t find out what was behind the statue.

Wanting to approach but feeling anxious, Princess Nanyan instinctively clenched her fist and raised her voice, "Who? Who is behind there?"

In the corner, Du Yunluo looked frustrated.

She and Mu Lianxiao had heard the conversation between Nanyan and Mu Lianhui word for word, but because of her own situation, Du Yunluo had not yet carefully contemplated the meanings within their dialogue.

As Mu Lianhui’s footsteps grew distant, Du Yunluo felt a bit relieved, secretly hoping Princess Nanyan would also leave quickly. Unexpectedly, she accidentally knocked over a candleholder in the corner.

After the crisp sound, Du Yunluo felt as though her heart had hit the Heavenly King Statue.

This place was too dark; when they hid, Du Yunluo had not noticed the presence of the candleholder.

Why would anyone place such a thing in the corner, truly setting her up!

Mu Lianxiao frowned.

Although he was Mu Lianhui’s brother, the convoluted thoughts of young girls were hard for him to fathom. He had listened for a while but understood little, except for Mu Lianhui’s straightforward refusal to marry Li Luan.

Princess Nanyan mentioned Du Yunluo, and Mu Lianxiao planned to ask Du Yunluo after Princess Nanyan left, but the situation suddenly changed.

Now that things had come to this, they could no longer hide.

Mu Lianxiao turned, signaling Du Yunluo not to move.

Du Yunluo hesitated, seeing Mu Lianxiao intending to go out alone. She grabbed him, shook her head, then suddenly raised her voice, "Princess, it’s me."

Giving a surprised Mu Lianxiao a smile, Du Yunluo passed him, leaving the darkness to stand before the Heavenly King Statue, observing Princess Nanyan from not too far nor too close.

Princess Nanyan recognized Du Yunluo’s voice and saw her emerge, unsure whether to be relieved or annoyed. She opened her mouth and asked, "Were you listening the whole time?"

Du Yunluo admitted, "I heard everything."

"How do you plan to speak with the Princess?" Princess Nanyan asked.

Du Yunluo took a deep breath and smiled, "You know the Princess’s thoughts, you know the Lady’s thoughts, but do you know mine?"

Princess Nanyan was stunned.
