Chapter 140: Chapter 109: Secretly Watching the Battle

This was the situation the Headhunter Race now faced. The Undead swarmed them, not caring if their heads were smashed in. All they wanted was to land a single blow with their Weapon. One, then two, then ten Undead closed in. The Headhunters’ space to maneuver grew smaller and smaller. Even though their tough skin could block some of the damage, they couldn’t withstand the sheer number of attacks.

Wounds began to appear on their bodies, multiplying until they were virtually being hacked to pieces by a flurry of blades.

"L-Leader, help... AARGH!"

"I’ll take you down with me!"

The Headhunters fought back with frantic desperation, but they were too few and had no room to move. They could only fall with wretched screams.

The Undead force that had intercepted them numbered a full ten thousand.

The goblins fared no better than the Headhunter Race; in fact, they died even faster. They had lost all will to resist, and escape was impossible. The only reason the slaughter wasn’t over in an instant was because of their sheer numbers.

The last rays of sunset vanished, and Darkness descended upon the land once more. Not a single member of the Headhunter Race or goblin escaped. The ambushing Skeleton Undead had surrounded and annihilated them completely.

Nearly 6,000 Undead were destroyed by the desperate resistance of the Headhunter Race and goblins, the price for the complete annihilation of nearly 3,000 enemies.

The reason the Undead suffered such heavy losses was that the battle had not taken place at night, which weakened their combat effectiveness.

...

"They’re all dead. The Alliance Army has been wiped out. Mengmeng, we have to go back. Let’s go, quickly."

Having witnessed the Undead annihilate the Alliance Army, Meng Ni grabbed her sister’s hand and started running toward their Tribe. She was so frantic she failed to notice her younger sister’s eyes, shining brightly in the dark. Mengmeng’s gaze darted about, her eyes filled with little stars of adoration.

’The Undead aren’t as savage as the legends say, but they really are strong!’

’So, so many members of the Headhunter Race and goblins... and almost none of them got away. They all died. This must be what the legends about the Undead are based on.’

’And... and they have so much food. If we could live under their protection like the Minotaurs, life would be pretty comfortable, right? We’d be safe, and we wouldn’t have to worry about finding food.’

Meng Ni, however, did not share her sister’s thoughts. Having witnessed the destruction of the Alliance Army, her impression of the Undead could be summed up in one word: brutal.

Neither the Headhunter Race nor the goblins were worthy of sympathy, but seeing them slaughtered like that still made Meng Ni’s heart tremble with fear. She wanted nothing more to do with the Undead. She just wanted to get back to the Tribe and hide in her own cave, where it was safe.

Meng Ni was, after all, older than Mengmeng and thought about things more deeply. ’Those cancerous Races have always existed, never completely wiped out. Why is that?’

’Their combat strength? Maybe. They’re probably stronger than many other Races. But the real key is their numbers!’

’The Headhunter Race and the Lizardmen both have significant populations, to say nothing of the goblins, who are even more numerous.’

’We were the ones who gave the Undead the intelligence on the Alliance Army. And just like that, thousands of them are dead. Won’t the Alliance Army be furious? I don’t believe for a second that was their entire force. They’ll definitely retaliate.’

’The Undead might not care about retaliation from the Alliance Army, but what about us?’

’If the Alliance Army finds out we were the ones who betrayed them... forget about just the two of us young Cat Girls, our entire Dora the Cat Tribe would be massacred.’

’It wasn’t an unheard-of scenario; in fact, it was quite common. Those cancerous Races were extremely vengeful. They used terror and brutal methods to suppress any Tribe that dared to oppose them.’

The more Meng Ni thought about it, the more panicked she became. All she could do was pray the Undead wouldn’t reveal who had given them the intelligence. If they did, she and her sister were truly doomed!

After leaving the fortress, the two sisters had originally intended to head straight back to their Tribe. But in the end, they couldn’t contain their curiosity and went to take a look at the battle.

"Who’s there?" As they neared the Dora the Cat Tribe, the sisters were spotted. Coincidentally, it was the same two Night Guard Catmen from before.

"It’s me, Meng Ni," she said, stepping forward to face them.

The Night Guard Catman squinted to recognize her, then glanced behind her. Upon seeing Mengmeng, his face soured. "You again. Always running around late at night. Get home, now!"

Mengmeng started to say something, but her sister gave her a pull. Grumbling resentfully, she followed Meng Ni toward their cave under the watchful eyes of the two guards.

"Sister! Why’d you pull me back there!" the Little Cat Girl, Mengmeng, exclaimed huffily.

"Okay, okay, don’t shout. It’s true, we are back late," Meng Ni said, forcing a smile for Mengmeng. She was still shaken from the battle she had just witnessed, her heart not yet settled.

Mengmeng was still annoyed, but she didn’t say anything more, quietly letting her sister lead her by the hand.

The last time they came back, she had been carrying the meat in her hands and the two Night Guard Catmen had seen it. Meng Ni was more thoughtful than her younger sister; she understood perfectly well not to flaunt her wealth. Before they even reached the Tribe, she had stuffed all the meat inside her clothes, hiding it against her body.

It made her look a bit chubby, but it was dark now. As long as no one looked too closely, she could get away with it.

Once they were safely back in their cave, Meng Ni finally let out a true sigh of relief. She quickly took out the meat and hid it away.

When Mengmeng saw the meat, she beamed. ’Who cares if the other Tribe members are angry?’ she thought. ’Meat is what really matters!’

"Sister, should we tell the Clan Leader what happened?" Mengmeng asked suddenly.

"..." Meng Ni froze for a moment, thinking it over. "We have to tell the Clan Leader something," she said. "But we can’t tell him everything."
