Three weeks had passed since Kai’s awakening.
Silverleaf Village had changed dramatically during that time.
The original collection of crude wooden shelters had become a proper settlement.
A central square now stood at the village’s heart.
Storage buildings held gathered resources.
Small farms stretched along the riverbanks.
Wooden fences marked the village boundaries.
Although still tiny by the standards of true civilizations, Silverleaf Village no longer looked temporary.
It looked permanent.
And that made Kai proud.
This morning, however, a new challenge had emerged.
Food.
More specifically, the village needed more of it.
The farms were growing well, but crops required time.
The population had already reached thirteen.
Two additional Spirit Blossoms had bloomed during the previous week.
The newest fox maidens were named Lyra and Elise.
While the Sacred World Tree ensured future growth, every new citizen increased resource consumption.
For the first time, Kai was beginning to understand what it meant to govern a civilization.
Every success created new problems.
More population required more food.
More food required more land.
More land required more workers.
Growth was never free.
Luna stood beside him near the village storage building.
"The food reserves remain stable."
"But not for long."
Kai nodded.
"I know."
The fox maiden pointed toward the distant forest.
"The western forest is filled with wildlife."
"We’ve only explored its outer edges."
Kai followed her gaze.
The forest stretched far beyond the horizon.
Dense trees formed a green ocean across the landscape.
Somewhere within that wilderness undoubtedly existed resources.
Food.
Materials.
Possibly dangers.
Everything a growing civilization needed.
"Then it’s time."
Luna smiled.
"The first hunting expedition."
The entire village became excited when the announcement was made.
For the fox maidens, this wasn’t simply a hunt.
It was exploration.

After some discussion, a six-person team was selected.

And two other fox maidens named Aria and Selena.

The group departed shortly after sunrise.
Several villagers gathered near the gate to see them off.

The child spent several minutes dramatically complaining before finally accepting defeat.
The sight made everyone laugh.
Soon, the village disappeared behind them.
For the first time since awakening, Kai ventured deep into the wilderness.
The forest felt completely different from the open plains surrounding Silverleaf Village.
Towering trees blocked much of the sunlight.
Strange plants grew everywhere.
Birds sang from hidden branches.
Occasionally, unfamiliar animal tracks appeared along the ground.
The deeper they traveled, the more alert everyone became.

After several hours of travel, the group stopped beside a stream.
Luna knelt near the water.
"Fresh tracks."
Everyone gathered around.
Kai looked down.
Several large footprints marked the muddy riverbank.
The tracks were far larger than any deer or wild boar.
"What made them?"
Mira studied the prints.
"Something heavy."
"Very heavy."

"Good."

"I know."
The warrior shrugged.
"But hunting rabbits won’t help us improve."
Kai couldn’t entirely disagree.

Within minutes, two deer had been captured.
Everyone celebrated.
The meat alone would significantly improve village supplies.
Yet Luna wasn’t satisfied.
"Let’s continue."
Kai raised an eyebrow.
"Why?"
The fox maiden pointed toward the larger footprints they had discovered earlier.
"I want to know what made those tracks."
The group agreed.
Curiosity had already taken hold.
By midday, the atmosphere changed.
The forest became quieter.
Birdsong disappeared.
Even the wind seemed weaker.
Experienced hunters often described dangerous areas this way.
Too quiet.
Too still.
Luna immediately noticed.
"Stay alert."
The fox maidens tightened their grips on their weapons.

Nothing appeared.

"There."
Everyone followed her gaze.
At first Kai saw nothing.
Then movement appeared among the trees.
A massive figure.

The creature slowly emerged into view.

But far larger.
Its body was covered in black scales.

Wind gathered around her.

Small cuts appeared.
The creature became even angrier.

Selena’s spell activated.
Water from a nearby stream surged forward.
The liquid wrapped around the beast’s legs.
Its charge slowed.
Only slightly.
But slightly was enough.
"Luna!"
Kai shouted.
The village chief moved instantly.
Spirit energy gathered around her blade.
The fox maiden accelerated.
For a brief moment, she became a silver blur.
Her sword flashed.
A deep wound appeared across the boar’s side.
Blood splattered onto the forest floor.
The creature screamed.
Then charged again.
This time directly toward Kai.
Everything happened incredibly fast.
One moment the beast stood thirty meters away.
The next it was nearly upon him.
Kai’s heart pounded.
Instinct took over.
Divine energy surged through his body.
A spear of golden light formed in his hand.
Without hesitation, he threw it.
The spear streaked across the battlefield.
BOOM!
The attack struck the boar’s chest.
The beast staggered.
Its charge faltered.
And in that moment, Luna finished the battle.
Her blade pierced the creature’s neck.
Silence returned to the forest.
The Iron-Tusk Boar collapsed.
Its enormous body crashed against the ground.
Nobody moved for several seconds.
Then cheers erupted.
"We won!"
"That was incredible!"
"Did you see Luna’s final strike?"
The fox maidens celebrated excitedly.
Even Luna smiled.
Though only slightly.
Kai approached the fallen beast.
The battle hadn’t been easy.
Yet they had succeeded.
More importantly, everyone had worked together.
This wasn’t merely a hunting party anymore.
It was the beginning of a real fighting force.
