Chapter 661: Chapter 372: Finally Left One Behind!
Morning, half past eight.
In a small hall on the west side of the conference center, members of the Academic Standing Committee were all gathering. A sweep of the gaze revealed about a dozen or so people. Evaluation by the committee was not entirely in private, as a few senior academicians were observing from the back rows and the entrance.
The candidates were sitting inside, with the doors shut, unaware of the situation in the conference hall.
Zhao Yi pushed the door open and walked in, almost immediately spotting a familiar face, Professor Huang Zhong from Nancheng University.
"Professor Zhao Yi, over here."
Huang Zhong greeted him enthusiastically, waving towards the entrance. The others watched warmly, but as they were not as acquainted with Zhao Yi, they did not directly offer their attention.
Zhao Yi took a seat next to Huang Zhong, returning the friendly nods to the others. After a closer look, he realized that there were only five academicians, including himself and Huang Zhong, in the room. He hadn’t been keeping track of the number of candidates and asked with a hint of surprise, "Are there only a few of us in this election?"
The others shot strange looks his way.
Zhao Yi was initially confused, but then the words Liu Hemin had said, ’quite a few of the candidates have withdrawn’, suddenly sprang to mind. He felt somewhat embarrassed. The reason there were only five was probably, maybe, perhaps due to him?
In fact, because Zhao Yi was participating in this year’s election for academicians, many of the nominated candidates had given up, resulting in a shortage of candidates for the Department of Mathematical Physics.
There were seven additional places for academicians in this year’s Department of Mathematical Physics, but only five remained after the second round of filtering.
However, being few in number does not necessarily mean one will be elected.
There were occasional years when the number of candidates exceeded the number of available spots, but according to the voting rules, a candidate needs to receive two-thirds of the votes from the department members to succeed.
And this was never an easy task.
With over a hundred mathematicians and physicists around, and excluding those senior members who did not participate in the voting and those who withdrew from participating in the election conference, the total number of people who voted was still more than sixty.
Sixty agree, that means forty supportive votes were needed.
So, the prospective academicians sitting here, including Huang Zhong, were a bit anxious. They knew that the upcoming committee evaluation was very important. The committee members also had the power to vote. If they could perform well and convince them all to vote, the probability of a successful academician election would be higher.
Besides, some people were also worried about the evaluation process.
It was not unheard of for the Academic Standing Committee to ’difficultly’ evaluate candidates. This did not imply they were being intentionally difficult but rather they asked candidates some questions outside of their research. The evaluation of academicians looked at two aspects: academic achievements and academic integrity.
Some committee members might ask tricky research-oriented questions or queries about results. If a candidate remained unable to answer, academic integrity might be called into question.
Unfortunately, such things could happen.
Although they knew several people in the Department of Mathematical Physics, they were not familiar with everyone, so it was possible they might encounter some tricky questions.
Huang Zhong was quite worried too.
Huang Zhong and Zhao Yi were both participating in the additional election for the first time, and they were the two youngest candidates in the room (with Zhao Yi being the youngest). While waiting in the room, Huang Zhong and Zhao Yi made small talk. When he heard about some ’rumors’ of the department’s evaluation and election voting, his speech revealed evident apprehension.
"Don’t worry about it, everything will be fine. I should be the first one, right? I’ll scout it out for you in advance."
Zhao Yi said, comforting Huang Zhong.
Soon enough.
The internal evaluation of the Academic Standing Committee began. Zhao Yi was called by the staff to the small conference room. He walked to the front and center, about where the podium was.
It was time for his self-introduction.
As he faced the dozen or so pairs of eyes, Zhao Yi didn’t feel nervous at all. Several of them were familiar faces, including those who had come over the day before to ask about the ’Supersymmetry Problem’. He casually began to introduce himself, "I am Zhao Yi, a Mathematics professor at Yanhua University..."
"Significant mathematical and physical achievements include the proof of the Collatz Conjecture, the formation and proof of the 3D Seismic Waveform, and the referred proof of the Twin Prime Conjecture..."
"Proof of Goldbach’s Conjecture..."
"Fermat’s Last Theorem..."
"In terms of Quantum Physics, I used a method of computer selection to discover the signal of the Higgs particle. At the beginning of this year, the European Nuclear..."
Every time Zhao Yi listed an achievement, someone in the audience couldn’t help but pull at the corners of their mouth.
He did not notice the reactions of those below the stage, but continued his introduction, "I am currently researching Multidimensional Space..."
"Cough, cough!"
A middle-aged square-faced man in the front row finally couldn’t help but wave his hand to interrupt, "Professor Zhao Yi, that’s enough. You’ve passed. No need to continue. We will all vote for you this afternoon. Don’t worry about it."
"That’s it?"
Zhao Yi was confused, "Then I..."
"Yes, you may leave now."
"But... actually..." Zhao Yi lowered his head and glanced at his ’speech notes’. He had prepared to speak for ten minutes. What he said earlier was merely a simple introduction, followed by a report on his achievements leading the field of ’Analytic Number Theory’, which was the basis of his standing for academician. freeweɓnovel.cøm
And now...
It ended right after he started? Wasn’t all that ’speech preparation’ done in vain?
He felt a little reluctant and regretful. Looking at the others in the small conference room, he noticed everyone was nodding in concordance, their eyes almost spelling out, "You can go now! Don’t need to be reviewed anymore!"
