Chapter 499: Chapter 299: Younger Brother, Can’t You Let Me Go!?
Yan Yi is a pure "Yanhua person".
She was an undergraduate at Yanhua University, who continued to study in the graduate school as a recommended candidate due to her excellent academic performance. Later, she went to Germany as an exchange student because of her outstanding grades. After earning her doctorate, she continued to work at the university as a lecturer.
The fact that she could stay on campus as a lecturer straight after university attests to Yan Yi’s excellent achievements. However, just a year into her job, she grew dissatisfied with it.
Being a university lecturer is a relaxed job.
For doctorate students who retained positions as lecturers, the prospects for career development are excellent. It wouldn’t be long before they could be appointed as associate professors, and promotion to professorship would only be a matter of time.
What Yan Yi was dissatisfied with was that she found she was not very good at teaching, but rather preferred to do research work.
She regretted her choice.
Since last year, she had been applying to work at the research institutes in the university.
Teachers employed by the university can work in research institutions and go to laboratories to conduct simple research primarily for drafting research papers.
This situation is somewhat formalistic.
Most full-time lecturers at universities focus on teaching. It is nearly impossible for them to achieve anything in research. Those who are accomplished in research have often been hired just because of their success and focus primarily on research. They take a casual approach towards offering courses and mostly supervise master’s and doctoral students rather than teaching undergraduate classes.
Yan Yi hoped to develop in the direction of research, not to focus on teaching, which she found "uninteresting". Therefore, she wanted to formally apply for a research position and gradually transition into it.
This put her in an awkward position.
Research institutions hiring assistant researchers would definitely prefer full-time researchers. The same goes for laboratories within the university. They either conduct ordinary research to write research papers, occassionally using experimental equipment without consuming research resources, or they fully devote themselves to research with the genuine intention of producing results.
In Yan Yi’s case, her applications sunk like stones in the sea. Her problem wasn’t that she was underqualified or incapable; no laboratory was willing to take her up.
Yan Yi found herself in an extremely awkward situation. She couldn’t quit her job as a lecturer directly but hoped to slowly transition into research.
After being rejected repeatedly, she found that Zhao Yi had a laboratory in the Biomedical Research Institute. Out of desperation, she thickened her skin and asked him for help.
It was hard for her to bring it up!
Although Zhao Yi is a professor at the university, even an esteemed Second Grade Professor who has become a very famous scholar internationally, he was, in fact, just a sophomore student, and could be considered Yan Yi’s student in a sense.
Having to ask a student for job assistance made her feel very awkward.
When Yan Yi heard Zhao Yi say he’d "think about it", she was extremely apprehensive. A rejection from him would have made her feel even more awkward.
Zhao Yi didn’t overthink it. He discussed with Yan Yi in all honesty; he genuinely intended to discuss with the people in his lab.
The following day, when he went to the lab, he told Zhang Wei about the situation.
"She’s the lecturer who teaches ’Biological Cell Science’," Zhao Yi said. "She came to me and wondered whether she could work in our lab. I want to know your opinions."
Zhang Wei laughed. "We are indeed short-staffed in our lab, but you can make this decision on your own."
"No," Zhao Yi said. "We should conduct an interview process for a new person. I don’t know much about Professor Yan."
"That’s true, let me take a look," Zhang Wei agreed. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
Being a woman of action, Zhang Wei quickly returned with details.
"Yan Yi is very accomplished. She even studied in Germany as an exchange student because of her outstanding performance. She has been working for only one year and she had applied to our institute twice before," She skimmed through some documents and frowned, "However, as she is a faculty member, it will be hard for her to fully devote to research, wouldn’t it?"
"Does this mean we are refusing her?" asked Zhao Yi.
"Not necessarily," Zhang Wei replied. "We need someone after all. She has studied in Germany, and her doctoral advisor is an expert from the Berlin Biological Research Institute. She should be competent enough?"
"We have just introduced two new systems from Germany. Maybe she has some experience?"
A light bulb went off in Zhao Yi’s head.
Indeed, operating and using new equipment is a challenge.
Although the equipment manufacturers dispatched experts to guide the usage of the equipment, becoming proficient in its use was no easy task. Occasional mistakes during the operation process were commonplace.
In research, mistakes are the biggest fear.
A single mistake could change all results, potentially destroy expensive materials, and unnecessarily expend a huge amount of budget.
After all, just hiring an assistant researcher will not cost the institute much. There is no significant loss for the lab, even if they hire one more person.
"Let’s have her over for an interview. I’ll tell Professor Yan to come over. You and Brother Ai can act as the interview panel. I will not be present then."
Technically speaking, since Zhao Yi was Yan Yi’s student, him being present during the interview was inappropriate.
...
Hearing that she could come in for an interview, Yan Yi became somewhat nervous.
She prepared for a long time on the day of the interview, reading until the wee hours that left her with dark under-eye circles. When she arrived at the lab, her extreme nervousness was quite evident. She thought she would be tested or undergo some complex procedure. However, the interviewing person, Zhang Wei, only asked her if she could use the lab’s new equipment.
"A microarray chip scanner?" After glancing quickly, Yan Yi was genuinely surprised as she recognized the machine. "I used this piece of equipment a lot when I was at the Berlin Biological Research Institute. My advisor often asked me to assist with various tests."
