Chapter 409: Chapter 261 Physics teacher: You guys, deduct 10 from your usual score!
School of Sciences classroom.
Qian Zhijin looked around for a moment before declaring the official opening of the press conference.
A whole row of people was seated at the desk, including the university’s vice-principal, administrative officers from the academic affairs department, and professors from various colleges. However, they were all insignificant. The one and only star was Zhao Yi.
All camera lenses were pointed at Zhao Yi.
Since they were holding an interview-style news conference, no special announcements were needed, and the question and answer segment began straight away.
Many reporters from major media outlets were in the audience, including those from national and local television networks, large news websites, academic press, and foreign media known for their speed. Once they found out Zhao Yi had returned to the country, they instructed their domestic correspondents to rush over for an interview immediately.
The first journalist who stood up to speak was from Capital TV Station, sitting in the front row. He asked the question that everybody was curious about, "Hello, I’m a reporter from Capital TV Station. May I ask how you came up with the idea of verifying the new particle, or that is, the God Particle?"
Zhao Yi brought the microphone to his mouth, hesitated for a moment, and then candidly said, "It was Prof. Chen Ming from the Science Academy who put the idea in my head. On our way to Switzerland, Prof. Chen Ming and I discussed our work, talked about the objective of the experimental tests, and we hashed out some ideas on the subject of the new particle. I was wondering at the time, could this be an opportunity to discover a new particle?"
"When we officially started our work, everyone told me it was impossible, because theoretically, even if the God Particle does exist, they would be in very small quantities. It’s unlikely to be discovered using conventional detection methods."
"I then thought about using a filtering method. I have to thank Prof. Chen Ming for that, he reminded me of it."
"If conventional methods don’t work, reduce the amount of data, and the anomalies will become incredibly evident."
"Finally, I succeeded."
"Here, I want to express my gratitude to Prof. Chen Ming, Prof. Kibor. They have greatly assisted me in my research work. Additionally, there’s also Prof. Ruan Wenye, he was the one who decided to have the team support my verification work."
Zhao Yi’s answers were very clear and standard.
He reflected back on his journey!
He expressed gratitude!
Many people at the university thought Zhao Yi was too young, and might be nervous during the interview, but his responses turned out to be very standard.
The elderly Vice Principal sitting beside him let out a sigh of relief.
Qian Zhijin saw this and naturally understood the sigh was born out of concern that the interview might go wrong. Seeing how committed Zhao Yi was reassured him.
But...
This felt like letting one’s guard down too soon, didn’t it?
Qian Zhijin thought he knew Zhao Yi quite well and he figured Zhao Yi was the type to tell the truth when facing journalists, especially about things he didn’t care much about, sometimes he wouldn’t consider the consequences at all.
The interview had just started!
Several other reporters asked questions next, and Zhao Yi answered them all earnestly, without coming across any problems.
That was until a reporter from a major internet media company stood up, "Many people say that if the new example actually is the God Particle, it would be a very significant discovery. Can you talk about the significance of this discovery?"
"I don’t know."
Zhao Yi shook his head, "Actually, even I, myself don’t know what use discovering a new particle might serve. Of course, it would certainly be of importance in advancing the standard model of particle physics. But even that work of defining the standard model is in its early stages."
"Our understanding of the quantum world of particles is still far too limited. For instance, we don’t have an adequate theory on how gravity and electromagnetism interact."
"The God Particle can help us to refine part of the particle model, but in fact, the theory of the Higgs field has already existed for several decades."
"I hope the new particle is not a Higgs particle. Any new discovery would have significant value for science, but confirming something that had been predicted doesn’t carry much significance."
"But I have a feeling that it is indeed the Higgs particle."
"That’s unfortunate..."
The way Zhao Yi expressed himself caught everyone on the scene by surprise.
When someone makes a significant research breakthrough, most would highlight the importance of their findings rather than disparage their own achievement or even express some disappointment.
But Zhao Yi did exactly that. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com
Not only did he do that, but everyone also agreed with what he said.
Indeed, the discovery of the Higgs particle would be astounding news, confirming decades-old predictions.
However, if the new particle were not the Higgs particle, it would mean that something truly novel had been discovered, which would carry greater significance for scientists studying the quantum world. It could even have the chance to overturn the particle model theory completely.
However, from Zhao Yi’s point of view, this was probably the same as saying, "If the new particle turns out to be the Higgs particle, the discovery wouldn’t hold much significance. "
Such honesty!
The Vice Principal sitting nearby couldn’t help but curve the corners of his mouth. He then tugged his beard so hard that one of the hairs got plucked out, causing him to grimace in pain. Lucky for him, no one noticed.
Another reporter followed up with a question, "Regardless, you’ve created a new data analysis method for particle research and found a signal for the new particle. This carries tremendous significance for scientists studying the microscopic world. Have you considered pursuing research in physics?"
"No!"
Zhao Yi replied very definitively, "The discovery of the new particle and the creation of the new method were accidental... you could call them unexpected. I was in Switzerland at the time, and everyone around me was studying data from collision experiments. But to be honest, I’m not really interested in physics, plus my foundation in physics isn’t that good. I haven’t fully grasped knowledge at the undergraduate level."
