Chapter 388: Chapter 252: Can "Correlation Coefficient" be used this way?
In order to embark on the achievement mission in biology, Zhao Yi had done many projects and published numerous papers at the Biomedical Research Institute. Still, his work faced accusations of faking results, which led to a series of public opinion effects. It was only after his biological research capabilities were finally acknowledged that he got the chance to start the achievement task in biology.
The process was extremely hard, at least Zhao Yi found it exhausting.
The physics achievement mission he’s now embarking on is somewhat baffling. He simply used the Supervision Law to spot mathematical errors in the California Institute of Technology team’s work and to point out several problematic details in the task at hand.
Then...
It started?
Zhao Yi felt amused. Initiating the biology task was painstaking, yet, for physics, it just happened.
The key point is, he was a beginner in the field of quantum physics, let alone completing the system’s achievement mission. His understanding of the Higgs particle was barely beyond its name. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
Maybe...
He should study?
Zhao Yi didn’t have much confidence in completing the task, but he reckoned he should give it a try since he had plenty of free time, and it was about time he did some studying.
He immediately indulged in studying quantum physics, with the Higgs particle being the first thing he researched and interacted with.
The Higgs particle, also known as the Higgs boson, is a spin-zero boson predicted by the standard model of particle physics. It carries no charge, its colored charge is highly unstable, and it decays immediately after formation.
The most important part of the above explanation is the prediction. In other words, to date, the Higgs particle only exists in the predictions made during the construction of the standard model of particles.
In particle physics, the standard model is a widely accepted framework that describes three of the basic forces -- strong, weak, and electromagnetic, along with the fundamental particles that make up all matter.
Apart from gravity, the standard model can reasonably explain most of the physical phenomena in this world.
The Higgs particle is predicted to exist in the system of the standard model of particles. Thus far, many pieces of data support the existence of the Higgs particle, but there is no absolute evidence for its presence. Because some data can only be used for inference, not for actual discovery.
The above information is sufficient to explain just how crucial the Higgs particle is to the proof of the standard model of particles.
It also implicates a great deal of physical research, such as the field energy effect of the Higgs mechanism in the standard model of particles, the decay of the Higgs boson, etc. Each one has significant research value in physics, but all of them are predicated on confirming the existence of the Higgs particle.
"If the Higgs particle could be discovered, one could hope to win the Nobel Prize in Physics!"
"This would definitely be a monumental discovery!"
"With so many physicists congregated here, most are probably hoping to prove the existence of the Higgs particle..."
After a brief study, Zhao Yi drew this conclusion. But due to his limited understanding of quantum physics, the standard model of particles, and even the upcoming collision experiment, he didn’t know how difficult it would be to prove the existence of the Higgs particle.
For now, he can only slowly learn more about the relevant knowledge.
Two days later.
His team back home hosted a celebration dinner. Everyone ate and drank merrily. Zhao Yi couldn’t stand the surrounding atmosphere as he was continually praised by those around him. He left early after only a few bites of food.
He took a stroll around the small town and even visited a bar.
Being in the time window before the experimental test, many researchers were relatively relaxing. The bar was bursting with people.
Zhao Yi ordered a Fat Boy Happy Water with whiskey, found a corner, and silently took a few sips.
The taste was not bad.
Sitting quietly in the corner, sipping a drink amidst the lively bar atmosphere, was also a kind of minor indulgence, once in a while.
His enjoyment was interrupted.
A surprised glance was shot from a distance, followed by a dignified woman approaching. It was Kaysa, from the California Institute of Technology team.
Kaysa held a glass of red wine. She placed the glass on the table and asked dubiously, "I’m surprised you drink at bars!"
"Why not?" Zhao Yi responded nonchalantly.
"I thought you didn’t come to bars because I’ve never seen you here before." Kaysa took a seat next to him.
"Do you come here every day?"
"Almost." Kaysa replied, "Thanks to you, I have no work tasks."
Zhao Yi laughed, "You should be thanking me then. Life without work is much more relaxed."
Kaysa became irritated and said through gritted teeth, "Why should I be here then?"
"I don’t care either way."
Zhao Yi responded calmly, "I only came because the team needed me. Actually, I didn’t really want to be here. It’s too far away, and the long journey is tiring. Plus, do you know about the Spring Festival? My family and friends are all celebrating Spring Festival, and I can only work here."
"I know about the Spring Festival."
Kaysa said, "It’s an important holiday for you, isn’t it? Like Christmas. Nobody wants to work on Christmas, but I suspect that such a working opportunity would be more important to anyone than Christmas."
"No, that’s just your opinion." Zhao Yi shook his head and said, "What we’re doing here is a particle collision experiment. I’m sorry, but I don’t know the exact name of the experiment and can only refer to it in plain term. But I don’t have a research background in physics. In fact, I’m not even interested in mathematics. Strictly speaking, I’m a biologist."
