Chapter 366: Chapter 242: Applying for the Goldbach’s Conjecture Project
"Renzhe, don’t overthink it, I wasn’t trying to trip you up on purpose!"
"I only want the best for you!"
"Look at you, such a lovely name, almost like a star, yet when it comes to girls, you tend to shrink back, unable to say a word. What a sight."
"This is supposed to be your training!"
"If it had been Fan Lei, he would have surely produced a whistle!"
"You should learn from him!"
After careful contemplation, Li Renzhe had to concede that it indeed seemed like how Zhao Yi had described. If it had been Fan Lei, who was somehow pranked, he would have definitely brushed it off with a whistle, causing passing girls to blush and walk away.
"But I can’t whistle!" said Li Renzhe thoughtfully.
"..."
Zhao Yi realized he couldn’t follow the tangent. He said exasperatedly, "You know how to loiter arrogantly when you smoke but you can’t whistle?"
"I can’t."
"Learn it!"
"I’ve tried, but I just can’t learn." Li Renzhe said seriously. Since he was a boy, he had seen other people whistling and hoped he could also do it well, maybe even whistle a song.
But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t produce a sound.
This was a strange thing.
Some people don’t have to learn at all; they simply pout their lips and the sound comes out, while some people can never master it no matter how hard they try.
Unknowingly, the topic of their conversation had steered off course.
Li Renzhe still enjoyed hanging out with Zhao Yi, not because of Zhao Yi’s fame though. He had a proud personality and didn’t feel he needed Zhao Yi’s popularity. The main reason was that when he was with Zhao Yi, he somehow managed to attract the attention of many girls.
He wouldn’t even dream about the exceptionally pretty ones. His standards weren’t that high. Even a mediocre-looking girl would do...
"Would these girls, after realizing that they can’t date Zhao Yi, opt for me instead?"
Li Renzhe pondered in silence.
This was the difference between Li Renzhe and Fan Lei. Li Renzhe was content to play second fiddle while Fan Lei always strived to be in the limelight. Yet, when hanging out with Zhao Yi, Fan Lei tended to become an ’assistant’ to the center of attention.
Li Renzhe’s role was fixed as the cool guy standing next to the center-stage. Sure, some girls showed interest in this cool guy, but he absolutely couldn’t utter a word for fear of ruining his mysterious aura.
During meals, Zhao Yi and Fan Lei were the ones conversing; Li Renzhe would sit alongside them, his body poised like a soldier’s. His demeanor attracted a lot of attention.
He didn’t speak much.
After the girls from the neighboring table left, Li Renzhe’s demeanor changed. His back hunched, he took the initiative to bring up a topic, "Zhao Yi, your research on virus mutation is impressive. Yesterday, when I bypassed the firewall to access the internet, I saw international news coverage about your research."
"Really?" This news left Zhao Yi feeling surprised. freёwebnoѵel.com
"Apparently it was a medical institution in New York - I’m not sure how to translate it. But it was an international medical report, and it seemed to say that your research holds much significance. What is it? Can you control virus mutations?"
Fan Lei also listened attentively.
"Controlling virus mutations isn’t as easy as that," explained Zhao Yi. "It’s just a discovery that the norovirus has a high probability of mutating in chromatic environments. Lots of instances of virus mutation move in the same direction: increasing infectiousness and decreasing toxicity."
"Oh."
Despite Zhao Yi’s simplified explanation, both of them understood.
They felt a lastingly envious.
As students of Bio-Science, everyone is bound to think about their future jobs. Some students transferred here because they were dissatisfied with their previous majors. They could choose to study a second major, but that’s a privilege reserved for students with outstanding grades.
Fan Lei was one of those transferred students. Not knowing what studying this major would lead to, he only cared about getting his undergraduate degree.
Learning about Zhao Yi’s contribution to Bio-Science research and his achievements raised new thoughts in him.
"If I study hard and do well in my professional course, I might be able to get into research too?"
As Fan Lei thought about it, he quickly shook his head. A professional research career would not suit him. After getting his graduation certificate, taking the public service exam or finding a different job would constitute a normal life trajectory.
Unlike Fan Lei, Li Renzhe had chosen a Bio-Science major from the start, not knowing exactly what it entailed. He chose his field simply because he was good at biology. He held a different idea from Fan Lei; he felt he should study hard with an aim to join a master’s program or perhaps even a doctoral degree, hoping he would stay in academia and do biological research.
That way, he would only need to focus on studying, without the need to consider anything else.
Curious, Li Renzhe asked everyone about how to get into a lab and work on research projects.
"Master’s degree!"
"Doctorate!"
Zhao Yi responded directly and decisively, "If you want to go into research, you’d better have a Ph.D."
"Well, how about this, Renzhe? You should try your best to learn. When you go for your master’s, you can join my team, and I’ll mentor you."
"..."
Ordinarily, Li Renzhe would have just dismissed Zhao Yi’s suggestion as a joke. However, upon giving it some thought, he realized this could be a possibility. They were roommates, but Zhao Yi already held the title of a professor.
Although Zhao Yi was a professor in the School of Sciences, he had already achieved results in biological research. There were more than three years left, perhaps, during this time, he would become a Professor of Biology.
