Chapter 318: Chapter 215: Only smart people know how to play like this

After Zhao Yi left, Dai Tianqing was depressed for a long time. He felt extremely anxious at one point.

One reason was the long-standing lack of progress in the experiment. As Zhao Yi pointed out, there always seemed to be a gap of a few weeks between each advancement, leaving them uncertain as to when the next breakthrough might come.

Now they were trying to verify a new inhibitory factor. When they discover something new, they need to find incontrovertible evidence before they can confirm this, prepare a report and publish a paper. This discovery needs to be associated with the Biomedical Research Institute, laboratory, and research team.

The research surely needed to speed up!

Even though Dai Tianqing had no idea what his peers were up to, he was certain that other research institutions were meticulously verifying Zhao Yi’s hypothesis. They would also undoubtedly zone in on one key point -

The new inhibitory factor!

This would be a significant medical breakthrough, and after successful verification, it could potentially bring a top national award for the research institute, the laboratory and Dai Tianqing himself, perhaps even international medical awards.

The attractiveness of verification research was evident in this.

Dai Tianqing hurried to urge the laboratory staff to work faster, "We need to quicken the pace, we must be the first to get results!"

"This isn’t about one or two papers. Have you heard what Zhao Yi said? Even an uninformed person says our progress is too slow..."

This was the second reason for Dai Tianqing’s depression. Zhao Yi had questioned the laboratory’s progress.

But...

Does Zhao Yi understand medical research?

He doesn’t!

He is just a rookie who lacks experience and has no idea about the normal pace of progress!

Medical research, chemical research, or any significant scientific discovery work in similar ways. Forming a scientific hypothesis is just the first step. Even if a new substance is identified, detecting it is no easy feat.

Proteins in the human body are somewhat easier to detect because protein molecules are large.

Factors, however, are different.

From the term ’factor’, it’s clear that it refers to a very minute substance. It may not be a large molecule, but a small compound, which plays a role in the complex system of the human body. But how can one prove its existence?

In the initial stages, which is where they were at right now, they could only infer its existence through a series of experimental data. And just being able to make that inference was a significant achievement.

Because they had virtually no knowledge about these new substances, they had no idea how to measure the data. They could only conduct one experiment after another, looking for irregularities in the data, and then perform more analyses to increase their understanding of the substance being measured.

This process naturally was very slow.

Only after gaining enough understanding about the new substance could they rely on reliable tests to sieve out substances with a high concentration of this new substance, and then conduct a series of measurements.

For instance, using an infrared spectrometer to measure the functional groups of organic substances, or using nuclear magnetic resonance to determine the type and quantity of hydrogen atoms in the molecule.

Only after a series of analyses, could they confirm the chemical composition of the new substance.

If they could achieve all this in one year, it would be considered a quick pace.

This was also Dai Tianqing’s plan. His cooperation with Han Hui’s lab, along with the participation of Academician Zheng, was purely for division of labor. How long it would take was still up to chance. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

For instance, they could make considerable progress tomorrow, and that would greatly speed things up.

Although this had always been the way with research and development, Dai Tianqing still felt frustrated when he thought about Zhao Yi’s words. He had to repeatedly remind himself, "Zhao Yi doesn’t understand research...".

"I won’t take it to heart! I won’t take it to heart! I won’t take it to heart..."

No matter what, Dai Tianqing still felt a sense of urgency. The importance of the experiment validation project was just one reason. Additionally, he didn’t want to lose to Han Hui’s lab.

Dai Tianqing and Han Hui, they cooperated and yet they competed.

Han Hui’s lab had the experienced Academician Zheng, and their progress was relatively faster. They were more significant in spotting traces of the inhibitory factor.

This was another reason for Dai Tianqing’s irritation. His laboratory was understaffed.

Dai Tianqing returned to his office to check the data, and couldn’t help but think, "If only Zhang Wei was here. She’s very capable, young and might have more innovative ideas. She’s also hardworking!"

"Should I ask Zhang Wei to come back?"

"Right!"

"Let’s try one more time!"

With that, Dai Tianqing went straight to ’Zhao Yi’s lab’, knocked on the door and saw Zhang Wei sitting at her desk working on a document.

Zhang Wei had been trained by Dai Tianqing personally. They knew each other well, so he didn’t beat around the bush and got to the point.

"Zhang Wei, we need more hands in our lab, can you come back...."

Before Dai Tianqing could finish, Zhang Wei hastily apologized, "Teacher Dai, I am sorry, I’m very busy right now."

"You’re busy? With your project?"

"Yes!" Zhang Wei pointed at her computer screen, "I am organizing the experimental data and also need to write reports and papers."

"Write reports? Draft papers?"

Dai Tianqing leaned over to look at the computer screen and saw an open file titled ’IL-1α Protein Project Settlement Report’, "Settlement?"
