Chapter 165: Chapter 149: A Genius at Scouting Talents
Doing things alone is too hard.
Designing a computer program usually requires a small team at the very least. When a shell company takes on a project, they have to hire 10 to 20 people to work on it together.
Mainly because there’s too much of the ’dirty and tiring tasks’.
The top-level programmers deal with technology, build the framework, and work on the core algorithms. The programmers on the next level are responsible for filling out the code within that framework, while those on a level lower simply debug and correct errors.
Once all of the code is written, the tedious task of debugging, running, modifying, and maintaining it follows.
That’s for ordinary software design.
Designing the top-notch algorithms and doing technical research varies significantly, but the common factor is that there’s still a lot of ’dirty and gruelling tasks’. The core members of a project can’t possibly do everything by themselves.
This is why some labs recruit ordinary PhD and Master’s students. Most people join these labs to do what seems like ’sophisticated drudgery’.
Of course.
Because even the grunt work is sophisticated and can’t be accomplished by just anyone.
As Zhao Yi carefully thinks through the design of a ’robot capable of independent shopping’, he realizes there are plenty of these drudgery tasks to do.
First and foremost, the obvious point is, there are so many things in a supermarket!
Vegetables, fruit, fresh produce, cooked foods, snacks, toys, clothing, everyday items...
And so on, and so forth.
Just taking one category, you could list a ton of items. Even if you don’t consider the brands or models, just listing each item would overwhelm you.
To allow artificial intelligence to recognize these items, specific data packages have to be made and fed into the computer database.
Zhao Yi is confident he can write the core code, but researching and collecting data, along with writing the auxiliary code, would be practically impossible for one person to accomplish.
He still wants to continue enjoying his high school life and not just become a tool for writing code.
He taps his forehead in frustration.
Man, this is stressful!
He must hire people, there’s no getting around it.
After thinking it through carefully, Zhao Yi realizes there’s nobody he can use from his immediate circle. He’ll have to look outside, but his research has to remain confidential. Therefore, his hires have to be trustworthy acquaintances.
But who to look for?
...
There’s no rush to hire people just yet.
Research-related achievement tasks don’t have a time limit. Zhao Yi decides to continue enjoying his vacation.
After spending two days at the hotel, he and the three women go sightseeing at local attractions. For Zhao Yi, sightseeing seems secondary. The primary objective seems to be taking lots and lots of pictures.
It’s so boring...
Zhao Yi doesn’t really enjoy photography, but he’s always being asked to take photos. The sadness in his eyes is clear to see. He even plans on hiring a professional photographer.
Lin Xiaoqing firmly opposes this idea, "It’s more fun when you take the pictures yourself."
"Right, right, right!"
"We can’t just throw money around like that!"
The last statement is obviously from Zhao Hongjuan. Zhao Yi realizes that hiring a photographer will be of no use, as he’s always being summoned to take group photos with them.
Sigh...
Life is just so tough!
While lamenting, Zhao Yi checks the messages on his phone and sees a bunch of texts from Sun Liang bragging about how great his winter camp is, how fantastic the teachers are, and how nice the dorms are. It sounds more like Sun Liang is living it up than attending a Mathematical Olympiad training and examination.
This guy doesn’t deserve my time!
Zhao Yi casually continues his sightseeing tour. When he gets back he willingly reviews the photos with Lin Xiaoqing and Zhao Linlin. He casually suggests, "We should send the pretty photos to Monkey through Penguin Number. Even though he’s at the training camp, I bet he still finds time to go online."
"Send him those beach pictures as well, including the ones of us on the speedboat and dining. Oh right, send plenty of the dining pictures."
"We can take a helicopter ride on the far west end of our beach, right? Let’s do that tomorrow and make sure we take plenty of photos!"
"Make sure to send those to him too!"
Zhao Yi says thoughtfully, "This is called sharing. I remember when I was little, my parents would always tell me that when we have fun or tasty things, we should learn to share."
"Now I finally understand the joy of sharing. Let’s share more with Monkey!"
Lin Xiaoqing and Zhao Lnlin chuckle at this.
After returning to his room, Zhao Yi finds lots of pictures on his phone. He chooses a few and sends them to Sun Liang, discovering just how joyful sharing can truly be.
In his memories...
Fast forward a decade or so and he has practically stopped posting on his feed. He despises those who brag about their vacations or lavish meals on social media.
But now, he’s beginning to understand the joy it brings, especially knowing that Sun Liang is stuck at a gruelling winter camp.
"We’re taking a helicopter ride tomorrow, and it’s not for the ride, but to take more pictures to send to him..."
"Right!"
"The more pictures I send, the more joy I’ll experience!"
After closing the chat with Sun Liang, Zhao Yi is once again reminded of the headache-inducing ’recruitment’ problem.
The computer professionals he knows aren’t run-of-the-mill people. Each one looks exceptional. In the ’Computer Technology Discussion Group’, people like Zhang Zhen are considered ’ordinary’. Most of them teach at universities or work in labs. ƒгeewebnovёl.com
Right!
Lab personnel.
Zhao Yi closes the group chat window and clicks on one of his Penguin contacts.
Xu Chao!
Xu Chao is a real PhD student with ’excellent’ technical abilities. However, he’s one of the less successful ones, perhaps due to life’s circumstances. He worked at a lab in Shencheng City on a project with his supervisor and planned to continue doing research there after receiving his doctorate.
