― Once he’s caught, he’s going straight into custody. No question about it.

“Is that so? You’ve done well, Chief Prosecutor.”

Through the receiver, I could hear Chief Prosecutor Yoon let out a hollow laugh.

― “Done well,” you say? Everything’s so corrupt I can’t believe they’ve gotten away with it this long. There are even connections to several missing persons cases. Unless you’re the President himself, not even lawmaker Kim Seyoung can make this disappear.

“He’s got skills, though. Chief Prosecutor, I’m in the middle of something important. I’ll call you again tomorrow morning.”

― Got it. Talk then.

The call ended.

I let out a silent sigh into the air.

Hyunseong’s words had shaken me for a moment—but this wasn’t something to drag out.

I dialed Park Dongsu.

― This is Lee Sanggeun.

“This is Kim Muhyuk. Is Mr. Park with you?”

― Ah! One moment, I’ll pass the phone.

A few seconds later, Park Dongsu came on.

― It’s me. What’s up, bro?

“The prosecutors are raiding Geukseong Construction tomorrow. He’ll probably try to flee today. You’ve got people on him, right?”

― I’ve sent guys to both his house and his office.

“Just have them tail him quietly and mark the hideout. I’m going too.”

― You’re coming? Don’t you trust me?

“It’s not that—I do trust you. I just want to see it with my own eyes. Don’t speak to me when we’re there. I’ll wear a cap and mask and watch from the back.”

― Got it. See you later then.

I hung up and stepped outside.

“Who was that?”

“Work.”

The smell of food tickled my nose. I turned instinctively toward the kitchen, where Hyunseong’s mom was busy cooking. A smile spread across my face.

“Kimchi stew, huh? Smells just like I remember.”

I sat down and looked at Myungsoo and Hyunseong.

“What were you guys talking about?”

“I asked this punk what he’s gonna do now, but he won’t say a thing. Frustrating bastard.”

Myungsoo shook his head. I turned to Hyunseong.

“You’re gonna take a leave from school, right?”

He nodded.

“Anything you want to do?”

“No, for now I just want to rest.”

Fair enough. Aside from a few years of drifting, all he’d ever done was train. What kind of dreams could he have?

“Alright, take some time to rest and sort things out. Help me out with my work too.”

Hyunseong didn’t respond.

What was going on in his head?

Just then, his mom called us.

“Come eat.”

We all stood up.

Myungsoo and I helped Hyunseong over to the table.

“Ah, this smell—it’s the scent of a mother’s love-filled kimchi stew~”

“Stop talking nonsense and eat.”

We helped Hyunseong into a chair and took our seats.

I scooped up a spoonful of the stew first. It tasted exactly like it had when I ate it at Hyunseong’s place as a kid.

“Ah~ Mom, you’re killing it! Still got the magic touch!”

We reminisced and laughed through the meal.

Afterward, we ate fruit she’d sliced and started to stand.

“Thank you for the meal, ma’am.”

“Oh, dear... It’s been so long since I cooked for you boys, I’m the one who’s happy.”

“I’ll get going now. You’re heading back down tomorrow, right?”

“Yes. Gotta leave early in the morning—”

She stopped mid-sentence and stared at me.

“Forget it. Don’t bother coming.”

She cut me off before I could say anything. I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Yeah, yeah. Just come down to Busan during break.”

“Okay, ma’am. Travel safe.”

She patted my shoulder. I turned to Hyunseong.

“Think it over. I haven’t changed. I’m still your friend, Kim Muhyuk.”

Hyunseong didn’t respond.

Once outside, Myungsoo followed and asked quietly, frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

“Something happen to Hyunseong? What’s with him lately?”

I’d thought about waiting until it was over... but I hesitated, then told him everything that had happened.

“What? It wasn’t an accident—it was on purpose? Just for the national team spot?”

“Yeah.”

“Those fucking psychos. That’s not something a human being does!”

Just as expected, Myungsoo erupted with rage.

“So that’s why he’s like that? That bastard’s being all high and mighty? Can’t tell if he’s loyal or just dumb. But still—you did good. You get hit, you pay it back a hundred, a thousandfold. Damn right you did good.”

Myungsoo’s reaction was different from Hyunseong’s.

“Remember that Jinpyo punk from back then? What if you hadn’t had power back then? This is Korea. Having power and not using it makes you a fool.”

“Thanks.”

“Don’t be stupid. Since when did Kim Muhyuk ever care what others think? Do what you want. You’re not the type to do otherwise. Shit, you’re gonna crush every last one of those bastards.”

He scoffed and added,

“You told me to go to college, so I did. You told me to take the bar, so I’m studying for it. I believe in you. And Hyunseong will too.”

I nodded slightly and smiled.

“I’ll take care of that idiot myself. Don’t worry about it—just focus on your thing.”

“Alright, get going.”

“Yeah.”

Waving goodbye, I got in the car.

Chief Ma said nothing as he drove us home.

The next night.

We drove through dark roads to the location Park Dongsu had given us.

We were heading to a villa in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do—where Jo Hyungu was hiding.

We stopped where we could see the villa from a distance. Park Dongsu’s men had arrived ahead of us.

Everyone except Park Dongsu gave me a respectful bow.

“Welcome, sir.”

“...Mr. Park, this really isn’t necessary.”

“Nah, it’s gotta be done right.”

I nodded reluctantly and looked at the villa.

“He’s in there?”

“Yeah. He went in yesterday and no one’s come out since. Looks like around ten guys total. Shouldn’t be too hard.”

“Then go in. Once it’s settled, I’ll follow. You don’t need me, right?”

Park Dongsu chuckled.

“Bro! I’m Park Dongsu. Just give me ten minutes.”

He split his men and Lee Sanggeun between vans and sedans.

I watched the vehicles move toward the villa.

“Shall we go too?”

“Yes.”

Chief Ma and I followed from a distance.

By the time we parked in front of the villa, the gate was already smashed in.

Yells and screams rang from inside.

We waited in the car. Soon, Lee Sanggeun approached, blood on his clothes.

“It’s done. You can come in.”

I put on a cap and mask and entered.

In the trashed living room, Jo Hyungu was kneeling while Park Dongsu sat calmly in a chair.

I stayed quiet behind Park Dongsu’s men, observing.

“Hyungu hyung, how long’s it been? Since that Incheon event, right?”

“You son of a bitch, Park Dongsu! It was you?!”

Even bleeding, he glared. I almost laughed.

Park Dongsu leaned on his chin, looking down.

“Let’s keep it simple. Hand over all your Geukseong Construction shares. Then you can go to the prosecutors in one piece. Sanggeun, got the paperwork?”

“Yes, boss.”

Lee Sanggeun handed over an envelope with a share transfer agreement.

“Here. Sign it.”

“You lunatic! Why the hell would I do that?! Are you insane?! Was it you who attacked Chanseong?!”

“Heh. What are you talking about? Who’s Chanseong? No idea. Just sign already.”

“...”

As Jo Hyungu stayed silent, Park Dongsu scratched his head.

“Hyung... you keep this up, we’ll bring your family in. Want me to make a call? The boys are standing by.”

“...Don’t. Let’s talk this out. Leave my family out of it.”

He caved quickly at the mention of family.

Park Dongsu gave a cold smile.

“See? You should’ve listened when I offered the friendly route. You wanna limp for life after getting beat by underlings? Just sign.”

“Sigh...”

Jo Hyungu exhaled in despair.

As he hesitated, Park Dongsu’s face darkened.

“Sanggeun, make the call.”

“Yes, boss.”

Just as Lee Sanggeun pulled out his phone, Jo Hyungu shouted.

“I’ll do it! I’ll sign! Where?!”

With a nod from Park Dongsu, Sanggeun approached and pointed to where to stamp.

Once the documents were sealed, he stood and said,

“It’s all done.”

Jo Hyungu sat blankly, staring at the paperwork in Dongsu’s hands.

Glancing over them, Park Dongsu muttered,

“If the prosecutors play dumb, your whole family dies. I’ll take care of the shares your wife holds. Don’t worry about it.”

He stretched and stood, glancing my way.

I nodded and stepped forward.

Jo Hyungu turned his head toward the noise—

Thud!

My kick sent him sprawling.

His blood splattered on my sneakers.

“W-What the fuck?!”

He spat blood and looked up at me, stunned.

Chief Ma stepped forward and grabbed him by the collar, dragging him up.

“Chief, he’s going to the prosecutors. Keep it light.”

“Yes, boss.”

But in Chief Ma’s hands, he quickly became a bloody mess.

I sat down across from him and muttered.

“You’re probably thinking, ‘I’ll kill these bastards later,’ right? If you’re hoping Kim Seyoung will help—don’t. You’ll meet in detention soon enough.”

Jo Hyungu snapped his head up.

“Everyone connected to you will lose everything because of you. And they’ll blame you.”

“Wh... who are you...”

“I’m the friend of the person whose life you ruined. Mr. Park, you can go now. The police and prosecutors will be here soon. I’ll be in touch.”

Park Dongsu nodded and left with his men.

The villa fell quiet. Only Chief Ma, Jo Hyungu, and I remained.

“Felt like you had # Nоvеlight # the world, huh? Cops, prosecutors, ruling party lawmaker friend... CEO of a mid-sized company. Must’ve been nice.”

“Wh... why... are you doing this to me...”

He wasn’t even worth responding to.

Soon, he slumped into a bloodied heap.

It didn’t feel satisfying.

There was no fight left in him. No resistance. No rage.

Just disbelief—that someone like this had ruined Hyunseong’s life.

The silence was broken by the arrival of police and prosecutors.

They looked between me and Hyungu, unsure what to do.

Then, a young man in the back stepped forward.

He had a prosecutor’s ID on his chest. A rookie.

“May we take Jo Hyungu into custody?”

I nodded silently.

The investigators dragged him out—barely conscious.

Once they left, the prosecutor came to me.

“I was sent by the Chief Prosecutor. I look forward to working with you.”

I bowed 90 degrees and watched him leave.

“Let’s go too.”

“Yes, boss.”

I left the villa with Chief Ma and headed back to Seoul.

“Chief Ma.”

“Yes?”

“Can you take care of it in the detention center?”

“Of course.”

“Once everyone connected to lawmaker Kim Seyoung and Geukseong Construction is arrested... make it look like a suicide. Quietly.”

“Understood.” fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

“I’ll nap a bit. Wake me when we get there.”

I closed my eyes.

The revenge was over—but all I felt was emptiness.

For days, Jo Hyungu and Kim Seyoung’s names filled the front pages and TV news.

The opposition called it a presidential scandal, targeting the Blue House.

The ruling party brushed it off as individual corruption.

Chief Prosecutor Yoon gained fame as a bold figure unafraid to defy the regime.

But those with power knew the truth—that no ruling party lawmaker could be arrested without presidential approval.

And when the new year of 1994 dawned, no one mentioned Jo Hyungu anymore.
