Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Jealousy

Sharu, who had been looking dazed, noticed that Zheng Bin and the others were gone, leaving him all alone. A greedy look immediately flashed across his face.

’If I can just take out Gu Yi, all that loot will be mine.’

He might have been on Zheng Bin’s team, but that didn’t mean they were truly united.

As the saying goes: men die for wealth, and birds die for food.

Sharu immediately began to creep cautiously toward Gu Yi.

Just then, Gu Yi noticed Sharu sneaking toward him. He murmured in despair.

’It’s over!’

The seconds ticked by as Sharu inched closer and closer to Gu Yi, his gun trained on him the whole time. The moment Gu Yi dared to show his head, he would be shot.

Gu Yi’s forehead was drenched in sweat. Time had never felt so agonizingly slow. A bitter refusal to accept his fate swelled in his heart, but all he could do was wait for death.

Just then, a gunshot rang out. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

Startled, Gu Yi peeked out to see Sharu collapse, dissolving into a flash of white light and leaving a backpack behind.

Then, he saw Long Ming vault down from the opposite staircase, land steadily on his feet, and sprint toward him.

"Bro!"

Gu Yi cried out, overjoyed.

Long Ming rushed to Gu Yi’s side and asked with concern.

"Are you okay?"

"I got shot in the left foot! It hurts like hell! What kind of screwed-up game is this? It’s too realistic!"

Gu Yi complained, gritting his teeth against the pain.

Long Ming glanced at Gu Yi’s left foot and saw that it was still bleeding.

He immediately grabbed Gu Yi’s clothes, tore off a strip of fabric, and used it to bind the wound and slow the bleeding.

"We need to get out of here. Those guys will be back any second."

No sooner had Long Ming spoken than Zheng Bin and his two men appeared, running down the upper staircase. Seeing Long Ming tending to Gu Yi, they raised their guns and shouted.

"That bastard! Get him!"

Long Ming instantly pulled Gu Yi behind the circular base of the statue for cover.

BANG! BANG!

Bullet after bullet slammed into the base, sending sparks flying.

Dodging the hail of bullets, Long Ming quickly raised his single-shot rifle, leaned out from cover, and fired.

BANG!

The bullet whizzed past Zheng Bin’s head.

Startled, Zheng Bin stumbled backward, frantically raising his own gun and firing wildly at Long Ming.

His shot having missed, Long Ming immediately ducked back behind the base, quickly ejecting the spent casing and reloading.

He took a deep breath, leaned out again, and sharply pulled the trigger.

BANG!

Sun Wu was instantly headshot and collapsed.

Terrified, Zheng Bin and Wu Kang immediately fell back, taking cover behind two metal trash cans.

"Holy shit, bro! That was amazing! Only two left."

Gu Yi shouted in excitement, seeing Long Ming take down another one.

But Long Ming’s voice was grim as he replied to Gu Yi.

"I’m down to my last bullet. Do you have any ammo?"

"Ah? I’m out, too."

Gu Yi’s mood plummeted, like a roller coaster dropping from its peak into a deep valley.

Long Ming knew this was a tough spot. There was no way he could take out two people with a single bullet. Closing the distance for melee would be difficult, and he wasn’t even guaranteed to win in a fistfight.

On the other side, a nervous Wu Kang asked Zheng Bin.

"Brother Zheng, what now?"

"Go get backup! I’ll keep an eye on them!"

Zheng Bin’s expression darkened. He’d never expected Gu Yi’s new partner to be this skilled. Three of their five-man team were already dead. If it was just the two of them, they might be the ones to get killed instead.

"Right!"

Hearing Zheng Bin’s order, Wu Kang immediately turned and ran.

Long Ming heard the commotion and peeked out just in time to see Wu Kang turn and flee.

BANG!

Zheng Bin immediately raised his single-shot rifle and fired at Long Ming’s exposed head.

Long Ming yanked his head back just in time as the bullet struck the base.

"What’s happening?"

Gu Yi asked hastily, seeing Long Ming’s grim expression.

"One of them ran. Probably to get backup."

Long Ming speculated, his face grim.

"So what do we do now?"

"Our only choice is to fall back. I’ll help you!"

"Forget it. That guy has us pinned down. You’ll never get away while carrying me. Just go, save yourself."

Gu Yi shook his head hopelessly.

Long Ming’s expression shifted, and he said in a hushed voice.

"I have a plan!"

"What plan?"

Gu Yi froze, looking at Long Ming in astonishment.

"We can use the statue to block his line of sight and crawl away backward!"

"That might actually work!"

"Let’s go!"

Long Ming immediately got down on the ground with Gu Yi. Carefully staying out of sight, they began to slowly crawl backward.

Even though Gu Yi’s foot was injured, his arms were fine, so he could still move well enough.

Meanwhile, Zheng Bin remained behind the trash can, his eyes fixed on the spot where Long Ming was hiding.

But after watching for a long time, he hadn’t seen either of them peek out. All he could hear were the occasional distant rumbles.

Zheng Bin was a little puzzled but didn’t think much of it and continued to keep watch.

The seconds ticked by.

As Long Ming and Gu Yi remained completely silent, Zheng Bin grew more suspicious. Still, he didn’t dare go check things out on his own.

Fortunately, Wu Kang soon hurried back with three other players in tow.

"Brother Zheng, we’re here!"

"Good. They’re hiding behind the statue. We’ll move in and surround them!"

A vicious look on his face, Zheng Bin led Wu Kang and the others as they cautiously closed in on the statue.

They approached the statue step by step, their hearts in their throats. Their hands couldn’t help but tighten around their guns.

The moment they were close enough, Zheng Bin and his men threw caution to the wind, raising their guns and charging forward.

But when they rushed past the statue, they found nothing but empty space behind it.

"Where’d they go?"

Wu Kang and the others looked at Zheng Bin, confused.

"Damn it! I was wondering why it was so quiet. So they actually ran off!"

Zheng Bin stomped his foot in frustration.

"So, what do we do now?"

Wu Kang and the others looked grimly at Zheng Bin.

Just then, Zheng Bin noticed the trail of blood on the ground. A cold smirk spread across his face.

"What’s the rush? See this blood? They couldn’t have gotten far!"

"Then let’s go after them!"

The faces of Wu Kang and the others lit up.

"Let’s go!"

Zheng Bin led his men, following the blood trail.

Meanwhile, Long Ming was helping Gu Yi flee toward the street that led into the fortress. The sewer entrance was just ahead.

"Just a little further. The sewer entrance is right up ahead."

"Okay. I really owe you for this one."

"Don’t worry about it. But how did you end up tangling with them?"

"We didn’t do a damn thing to them! Those bastards from Sinful City are disgusting. They just get greedy the second they see someone else find good loot."

Gu Yi grew angry just talking about it.

"I get it."

Hearing this, Long Ming had a good idea of what had happened.

Soon, the two reached the manhole. Long Ming helped Gu Yi climb down.

"Easy does it."

"Right."

Gu Yi began to climb down slowly.

But at that very moment, Zheng Bin, Wu Kang, and their men arrived. Seeing Long Ming and Gu Yi about to escape, they raised their weapons and opened fire.

Long Ming spotted them the instant they appeared. Without a moment’s hesitation, he shoved Gu Yi down into the opening.
