Chapter 44: Stay Away From Faye Grande

The moment we heard the news, we waited for the closing bell. The seconds dragged. My leg kept bouncing under the desk. Malo kept checking his phone like it might suddenly explode with answers.

When the bell finally rang, we didn’t even pretend to walk normally.

We ran. Straight out of the building, across the field, past the parking lot. My lungs burned but I didn’t stop. Malo was right behind me, breathing hard.

We reached the edge of the woods and slowed down. The cemetery was ahead.

Sirens had already faded, but the flashing lights were still there.

We hid behind the woods to check. There were a few GPF officers around.

Yellow tape stretched across the entrance. Two officers stood near the path. Another one was writing something down on a small notepad.

My stomach twisted.

"Do you think it’s Peamah’s?" I asked Malo, who was behind me.

He leaned slightly to the side, trying to get a better look without stepping out.

"I don’t know. They did not specify whose body it was."

We kept watching, hoping for a sign.

An officer opened the back of the ambulance. Two paramedics pushed a stretcher forward. The body was covered with a white sheet.

My fingers curled against the tree bark.

The sheet shifted slightly when they lifted it. My heart jumped.

I tried to see the shoes. Anything. A shoe, a hand, a piece of clothing.

Something that could tell me if it was him.

We saw the ambulance taking in the body and driving off.

The doors slammed shut. The engine roared

The ambulance pulled away from the cemetery and disappeared down the road.

The place was already a crime scene and the GPF were investigating.

An officer crouched near the ground. Another one took pictures.

The camera kept flashing.

"We are fucking dead, aren’t we?" I muttered.

My mouth had gone dry. Malo rubbed both hands over his face.

"How is it possible? We buried the body, right?" Malo said.

His voice came out tight.

"It’s not Peamah."

Sasha’s voice interrupted us.

I flinched and turned around.

She stepped out from behind another tree like she had been standing there the whole time. Her arms were folded as she stared at the scene.

"What the fuck are you talking about?" I definitely don’t like this bitch.

She shrugged slightly.

"The moment I found out that a body was found, I ran here immediately. I saw the whole scene. It was a groundkeeper’s body. Someone murdered him early this morning," she said.

Malo let out a breath that sounded like he had been holding it all day. His shoulders dropped.

"Okay, we came here for no reason," Malo said as he calmed down. He had been worried since the moment he found out about the body.

I glanced back toward the cemetery again.

Officers were still moving around.

Talking. Writing. Looking at the ground.

Someone murdered him this morning.

That meant something else was happening here. Something we didn’t know about.

And I have a place to be right now. Time to go.

"Great, someone else is doing a murder spree. I’m leaving," I said, picking up my backpack. I hate it here. This place fucking reeks.

I brushed dirt off my jeans and slung the bag over my shoulder.

"There is a party going on tonight at Vera’s house. She is throwing a sweet sixteen. Do you guys want to come?" Sasha said.

I stared at her.

A party. Right now. After everything.

"I’m not really the party kind. I will pass," I said.

Malo scratched the back of his neck.

"I’m not going. I only go to parties to distribute drugs, which you are now doing, so I would rather be eating my donut in some corner," Malo said.

I snorted quietly.

Who the fuck wants to hang out with this bitch?

She is psychic and dangerous.

"I’m new to this drug distribution. I need help. Malo, would you like to assist me?"

"Hell no."

"25%."

Malo froze. Literally froze.

Then he slowly turned his head toward her.

That made Malo’s mind reset. Hearing money made him change his mind.

"50%," he bargained.

Sasha raised an eyebrow.

"25% is all I can give. Take it or leave it."

Malo shook his head immediately.

"50%, since I will be helping. It’s a partnership. So 50 50."

Sasha stared at him. He stared back. Neither of them blinked.

They went back and forth for a while, throwing numbers like they were playing some stupid business game.

After bargaining, they ended up with 40–60.

Malo looked satisfied.

Sasha looked like she had expected that result from the beginning.

"What are you kids doing here?"

The voice came from behind us.

We all turned at the same time.

A young lady in a GPF uniform approached us.

My stomach dropped again.

Her badge reflected the fading sunlight.

"Nothing. We were just passing by, that’s all," Sasha said.

The officer looked around slowly. Then back at us.

"Passing by? The last time I remembered, this is not the route home. What are you doing here?" she asked, putting her hands on her waist belt, waiting for answers.

None of us spoke. We looked at each other. Malo scratched his cheek. Sasha blinked.

My brain was completely empty.

"We have a project, so we were trying to do it..."

That was the only thing I could think of.

The moment the words left my mouth, I regretted them.

"A project in the cemetery?"

She tilted her head slightly. She didn’t look convinced.

Maybe I should just confess to her what happened here last night.

The thought crossed my mind so fast it scared me.

"You know we are not in the cemetery. We are outside... there is a huge difference," Malo said, nervousness crowding his face.

The lady kept staring at us. Waiting. Watching.

Her eyes moved from me to Malo.

Then to Sasha. Then back to me again.

I swear she could notice our strange behavior.

My fingers tightened around the strap of my backpack.

I held my backpack, praying in my mind, hoping for this awkwardness to stop.

"Sasha, can we talk in that corner?"

The lady pointed. Sasha sighed quietly and followed her.

They walked a few steps away from us.

"Hey, I think we should leave," I whispered to Malo.

My voice barely came out.

"We can’t leave. That is Sasha’s sister," he whispered back. "If we leave she might get suspicious, so let’s wait."

Great. Just great.

I watched as they talked.

The officer crossed her arms while Sasha spoke. There was something about the lady.

Our eyes met as she talked to Sasha. For a moment she just stared at me.

Like she was trying to read my mind.

It felt like they were talking about me, so I lowered the volume button on my phone to hear better.

"What are you doing with Faye Grande?" she asked Sasha.

My heart skipped.

"Nothing. We go to the same school and we sit together. Also she is carrying Princess’s pups and I work for Princess now," Sasha explained.

"Wait, what? She is pregnant?"

"Yes she is..."

The officer blinked several times.

"How is that possible?"

"You know when two people smash, it results in a nine month scandal," Sasha said, demonstrating with her fingers together.

"I know. Will you stop it?"

"You are the one who said how is that possible."

The officer rubbed her forehead.

"Look, you stay away from Faye Grande. I don’t want you to mingle with her... you hear?"

"I heard you."

Sasha said that, but her sister grabbed her ear.

"I know you don’t use those ears for hearing, but this time listen to me. Stay away from Faye Grande."

"I said I heard you. Let go of my ear."

Sasha pulled her head away.

The officer released her ear with a sigh. Sasha and her sister finished talking. Then the officer turned and walked past us.

Her eyes flicked toward me again. Just for a second.

All we could do was smile at her before she left. freёwebnovel.com

My cheeks hurt from the fake smile. Sasha walked back to us, putting on her happy face again.

Like nothing had happened. Like her sister didn’t just warn her about me.

"Okay, she doesn’t suspect anything. We will meet tonight. Put on your best dress because anything can happen."

I stared at her. Definitely not liking this.
