Chapter 303: Chapter 303: Investigating the Person Behind
"With a situation like this, the only option is a blanket search. It’s the most tedious and difficult kind of investigation."
Wu Sheng’s brows knitted together. "Who on earth was behind this?"
Was it targeting Su Li, or was it a random crime?
Su Li’s safety was at risk, and Wu Sheng simply couldn’t tolerate it.
He stayed up all night investigating the matter.
But after searching all night until morning, he still hadn’t found any solid leads.
After daybreak, he went home to wash his face and change his clothes, originally planning to go to Su Li’s place to see her off.
While washing his face, however, he suddenly remembered what Su Li had told him—the things Ye Xilan had said behind her back.
A jolt of shock went through Wu Sheng.
’Could the person behind this be Ye Xilan? Did Ye Xilan have someone go after Su Li?’
It wasn’t impossible. After all, the timing was too coincidental. Su Li had just seen her, and right after, she was targeted for kidnapping.
Wu Sheng slammed his hand heavily on the bathroom sink.
"Ye Xilan, it had better not be you. Otherwise..."
Wu Sheng knew Ye Xilan too well. When that woman went crazy, she was capable of anything.
He had to find out as soon as possible if she was behind this. If she was, he had to stop her.
Otherwise, Su Li would still be in danger, and who knew when she might...
Wu Sheng gritted his teeth. Forgetting about changing his clothes or going to see Su Li, he immediately had his people start investigating Ye Xilan.
He wanted them to check her recent activities, to find out if she was the mastermind.
After two days of investigation, they found no evidence or unusual movements.
It seemed like Ye Xilan wasn’t the one who ordered Su Li’s kidnapping.
But if it wasn’t Ye Xilan, then who could it be?
Wu Sheng had no leads. The car, too, seemed to have vanished into thin air, leaving no trace.
All the leads had gone cold. Even if he wanted to continue investigating, there was nowhere to look. He could only set it aside for now and wait for new clues to surface.
Meanwhile, Su Li’s injuries were almost completely healed, with the scabs having formed and fallen off.
Although she still had quite a few black and blue marks, they no longer hurt unless touched. She could fully return to her normal life.
Thanks to Su Li’s efforts, Little Tang Mo finally stopped insisting on escorting her to and from school.
By the time the wound on her forehead had also healed, leaving only a faint scar, Su Li’s final exams were upon her.
Because of the upcoming finals, Su Li had managed to secure a temporary reprieve. She could wait until after her exams were over to meet Wu Sheng’s mother.
Su Li was very grateful for Wu Sheng’s understanding and threw herself completely into studying for her exams.
After her exams, Su Li’s winter break began, while Little Tang Mo’s finals were just around the corner.
On the very first day of her break, Wu Sheng showed up to corner her.
"Your exams are over and you’re on break. You can come back with me now, right? I’ve already bought the gifts my mom likes for you."
Su Li: "..."
"You’d definitely be nervous if we met at my house, so we can meet somewhere else. Just having a meal together would be fine."
Su Li: "..."
Wu Sheng looked at Su Li’s tense face. "You’re still nervous?"
Su Li let out a breath. "Can we push it back another two days? I have to go check on the factory today. The foreman said the renovations are done, and I need to go inspect it."
Wu Sheng: "..."
"After the inspection, I still need to look at office furniture and things. It’s almost the New Year, and if I don’t go soon, all the shops will close..."
Wu Sheng: "..."
Su Li wasn’t lying; she really was busy.
Of course, a part of her also just wanted to delay it for as long as possible.
Since Su Li had put it that way, what could Wu Sheng do but relent?
"Fine. Then we’ll postpone it for another three days."
When Su Li arrived at the factory, her attention was completely captivated.
Compared to a month ago, the factory was now completely transformed.
The layout and the renovations had changed everything.
She had worked with them once before—they were the people Wu Sheng had helped her find—and their character and skills were both impeccable.
Su Li spent the whole morning carefully inspecting the work. After it passed her inspection, she paid the foreman the final balance on the spot.
"Thank you, sir. You’ve worked hard." freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
The foreman really was great. After finishing the renovations, he even had his people clean the entire place, inside and out. It left her speechless with appreciation.
"If you need anything else in the future, just give me a call."
Su Li was pleased with the foreman, and the foreman was pleased with Su Li, who was decisive and didn’t delay her final payment.
Su Li took some more photos and then headed straight for the second-hand market.
She went to the same shop she had worked with before. This time, Su Li needed a larger quantity and more items. The owner sincerely recommended suitable pieces and, in the end, gave her the best possible price.
After a flurry of activity, everything was settled by the afternoon.
The owner arranged to deliver the items the next day.
The next day, Su Li went to the factory at the agreed-upon time in the afternoon.
Just as she opened the door, the furniture delivery arrived right on time.
It was a big truck, completely full.
There were three young men moving the furniture. They didn’t talk much but were very diligent. They first unloaded the goods, waiting for the truck to go pick up the second load.
They didn’t just dump everything and leave, either. They patiently waited for Su Li’s instructions and, while waiting for the second load, arranged the furniture according to her requests.
"Here... over there... and then here..."
Su Li directed them for a long while, spending nearly two hours getting the first batch of furniture arranged just right.
Just as they finished, the second and final load arrived.
The same three young men did the moving. They were efficient the entire time, getting everything properly put into place. It really saved Su Li a lot of effort.
"Thank you all so much. You’ve really worked hard," Su Li said gratefully.
The three young men saw that everything was done and were about to say goodbye and leave.
How could Su Li let them go just like that? "Wait a moment..."
If not treat them to a meal, she should at least buy them some drinks or snacks. It was the middle of winter, yet they had worked up a sweat without even wearing their jackets.
Just as Su Li was about to speak, Wu Sheng suddenly appeared.
He was carrying a large watermelon in his arms and a bag in his hand.
"Thanks for all your hard work, everyone. You must be thirsty. Come have something to drink."
Wu Sheng smiled at Su Li, placed the watermelon on a table, and began addressing the three young men like he owned the place.
He acted so much like the host that the three young men, who had been a bit reserved with Su Li, immediately relaxed. "Thanks."
"Don’t mention it." Wu Sheng was wearing a military uniform, which made the three young men like him even more.
Wu Sheng handed out the sodas he had bought, even unscrewing the cap on one for Su Li.
Su Li had been busy for half the day and was already thirsty. She dazedly took it and drank without a word.
As Wu Sheng played host to the three men, they began treating him as the owner, which made Su Li feel a bit complicated.
She couldn’t quite describe the feeling. It was just... peculiar.
Wu Sheng grabbed a bottle for himself. After they had all quenched their thirst, he pointed to the watermelon on the table.
"Next up is the watermelon."
The three young men looked at the watermelon, their Adam’s apples bobbing.
Eating a big watermelon in the summer is refreshing, but to see one in the dry winter—a rare sight—especially when you’re all sweaty? It was just too perfect.
It’s just...
"We’ll have to find a knife," Su Li said. She wanted to ask Wu Sheng where he had found a huge watermelon in the middle of winter but held back, deciding to eat first and ask later.
To eat it, they needed to cut it open, which meant they needed a knife. As she spoke, she started to head out, but Wu Sheng stopped her.
"What do you need a knife for?" Wu Sheng rolled up his sleeves and showed his fist. "It’s sweetest when you use this."
Su Li looked at his fist. "Will that work?"
"Of course, it will." Wu Sheng held up his hand. "You guys, stand back a little."
