Chapter 299: Chapter 299: Who Is It?

Wu Sheng and Little Tang Mo both let out a breath and started to head inside.

"Wait, the nurse is dressing her wounds," the doctor said, quickly stopping them.

Wu Sheng frowned. "Does she need to be admitted?"

The doctor was exasperated. "No. She just needs to rest for a couple of days."

When Su Li came out, her wounds treated, she looked much the same, aside from the gauze on her forehead and a slightly slower walk.

She smiled upon seeing Little Tang Mo.

Wu Sheng frowned, strode over, and helped her into her coat.

"Be careful with the wound on your hand."

When Su Li saw Wu Sheng, a complicated emotion flickered in her eyes, but she obediently let him help her with her coat.

Once her coat was on, Wu Sheng carefully wrapped a scarf around her neck.

"Thank you," Su Li murmured. The words had barely left her lips when Wu Sheng suddenly bent down and swept her into his arms.

Su Li let out a small gasp, mystified. "What are you doing? Put me down."

Wu Sheng was the one who felt mystified. ’What am I doing? We’re going home, of course. I already picked up your prescription.’

He started walking out, carrying Su Li. "Let’s go, Little Point."

"I’m fine. I can walk on my own," Su Li said, trying to wriggle free.

"Don’t move." Wu Sheng stopped and frowned down at Su Li. "The doctor said you have multiple soft-tissue contusions, and your legs and hands are covered in scrapes. That has to hurt. Why do you keep insisting you’re fine and it doesn’t hurt?"

Su Li stared at Wu Sheng’s face, momentarily stunned.

Wu Sheng sighed and started walking again. He already knew Su Li had a habit of acting tough and insisting nothing hurt, but this time, he realized it wasn’t just an act.

It was as if she genuinely didn’t feel pain.

"This habit you have of never crying out in pain... when did that start?"

After setting Su Li down in the car seat, Wu Sheng didn’t pull away. He leaned forward, one hand on the roof of the car, and looked at her from close range.

He’d been injured often enough to know that the only people who weren’t afraid of pain were those who, for some medical reason, couldn’t feel it.

Otherwise, even for someone with an incredibly high pain tolerance, it’s impossible not to feel it.

You only get used to it by being hurt over and over again.

But that kind of habit—being used to pain, used to not crying out—is forged in blood and tears.

’So what about Su Li? She’s so young, why is she like this?’

’Did she get hurt, time and time again, until she built up this tolerance?’

At the thought of this possibility, Wu Sheng’s hand on the roof of the car tightened, and he stared directly into Su Li’s eyes.

Su Li averted her gaze, turning her head slightly.

’How could I possibly answer that? Tell him I got used to pain in my last life? That an injury this minor really doesn’t hurt?’

Su Li remained silent.

Seeing her reaction, Wu Sheng took a deep breath.

"Su Li, from now on, if it hurts, I want you to cry out. Okay?"

When Su Li didn’t cry out, when she said it didn’t hurt, his own heart ached for her.

After a moment’s hesitation, Su Li gave a slight nod.

Only then did Wu Sheng close the car door.

After discovering this quirk of Su Li’s, Wu Sheng became extremely anxious every time she got even slightly hurt. He was terrified she was lying about the pain. A small nick from chopping vegetables was enough to make him want to rush her to the hospital for a full-body scan.

Of course, that all came later.

Wu Sheng turned and picked up Little Tang Mo, who was standing nearby. "Congratulations, Little Point."

Little Tang Mo let out a small, hoarse grunt. "Put me down. The police are waiting." fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

Wu Sheng burst out laughing. "Tsk, tsk... your voice sounds terrible."

Su Li overheard and couldn’t help but speak up.

"Little Mo’s voice is like that because he hasn’t spoken in a long time. It’ll be back to normal in a couple of days."

Wu Sheng opened the back door, placed Little Tang Mo in his seat, and muttered, "Can’t even say one little thing."

The corner of Little Tang Mo’s mouth twitched into a fleeting smile.

As they drove away from the hospital, Wu Sheng glanced over at Su Li.

"Su Li, did you see who it was?" freewebnovel.cσ๓

He was asking about her kidnapper.

’Once I find out who it was, I’ll hunt them to the ends of the earth. I will absolutely not let them get away with this.’

Su Li looked into Wu Sheng’s eyes and shook her head. "I didn’t get a clear look."

She had glanced at the person in the driver’s seat, but unfortunately, they were wearing a hat that obscured their entire face.

As for the person who actually abducted her, she hadn’t seen them at all. She only heard a bloodcurdling scream.

"Do you suspect anyone? Did anything unusual happen before the kidnapping?" Wu Sheng pressed urgently.

Su Li paused. "No."

’I wonder if it was Wu Sheng’s mother...’

They drove back to the scene of the incident. The crowd was gone from the street, but had gathered in a nearby shop.

Most of the people who had come out earlier were still there, all gathered in one store. The two police officers were inside as well.

The basic facts had been explained, and the police officers’ questions were similar to the ones Wu Sheng had asked.

In this era, there were no surveillance cameras, leaving them to rely solely on witness memories.

"There were two people in the car?"

"I think so. I didn’t have time to get a good look," Su Li answered, trying to recall the details.

"What about the license plate? Did you get the number?" an officer asked.

This time, Su Li nodded emphatically.

"I didn’t, I didn’t have time. But Little Mo saw it."

Little Tang Mo quickly recited the license plate number.

"Yes, that’s it! I think that’s the one I saw earlier, too."

A few of the shopkeepers chimed in, agreeing.

Cars weren’t common back then, so people didn’t have the modern instinct to immediately memorize a license plate number after an incident.

Most people hadn’t developed that awareness yet. Fortunately, Little Tang Mo remembered.

He had a good memory to begin with, and since it was Su Li who was in danger, the image was seared into his mind.

"The car was white... and the person in the driver’s seat seemed to be wearing a golden chain on their wrist..."

Little Tang Mo took the notebook and pen directly from the officer’s hand and quickly sketched the car he had seen.

It was just a few simple strokes, nothing complex, but the image was perfectly clear.

When Little Tang Mo stopped drawing, he was met with a chorus of amazed gasps.

"That’s incredible."

"What a capable kid."

As everyone praised him, Little Tang Mo ducked his head with a shy smile before looking at the officer with a serious expression.

"Sirs, you have to catch the bad guys."

’If they don’t get caught, how can I stop worrying about Su Li?’

Hearing this, Su Li immediately added, "That’s right, you have to catch them."

’Thank goodness they took me. What would have happened if it had been Little Tang Mo? He’s so small, he would have had no way to break free!’

The officer nodded gravely. "We will do everything in our power to apprehend the suspects. We’ll also increase patrols in this area. In the meantime, everyone please stay vigilant and look out for your neighbors."

Everyone readily agreed. "Of course. We’ll all be more careful from now on. We might not know everyone around here by name, but we know the faces. If we see a stranger, we’ll all keep an eye out."

Once all the questions had been answered, the two officers left to continue their investigation.

Wu Sheng walked them out.

"Thank you for your trouble. I’ve also asked a friend to look into that car. I should have some information soon. I’ll let you know what I find. If you learn anything and need assistance, feel free to call me anytime."

"Okay, we will."

"Thank you. Thank you both," Wu Sheng said politely.
