Chapter 193: Chapter 193: Don’t Scare Me

A furious roar was drowned out by a piercing screech of brakes as the car—at the very last moment—stopped.

It had stopped. The driver had managed to slam on the brakes at the very last second.

The car came to a halt with its bumper already brushing against Su Li’s pant leg.

As the tires screeched, Su Li squeezed her eyes shut, threw her arms over her head, and let out a sharp cry.

After the screech of brakes and the shriek, a dead silence fell. Even the air itself seemed to grow still.

Seeing Su Li still standing there, completely unharmed, Tang Yuanxiao’s knees buckled from a short distance away, and he nearly collapsed.

Wu Sheng, who had charged forward like a panther with inhuman speed, was now just a few steps away from Su Li.

He didn’t stop. He lunged forward, seized Su Li by the arms as she cowered with her head in her hands, and roared in fury.

"Su Li, do you have a death wish?! Why didn’t you move?!"

His tone was darker than she had ever heard it, and the murderous rage on his face was terrifying.

Without pausing after his roar, his face a mask of murderous fury, he stormed over to the driver’s side door. "Get the hell out of the car!"

He landed a heavy kick on the door. The horrifying THUD made the driver inside, who was already on the verge of pissing himself, flinch and freeze in terror.

"Get out!" Wu Sheng’s roar was the only sound. The next second, he violently raised his fist and smashed it into the car window.

With a loud CRACK, the window instantly spiderwebbed with fractures.

The driver shrieked in terror.

"Get the hell out here! If you can’t drive, what the fuck are you doing behind the wheel?!" All of Wu Sheng’s rage and terror were unleashed on the driver.

After roaring, Wu Sheng raised his hand again. With another BANG, the window glass shattered completely.

Wu Sheng’s hand was instantly covered in blood, and a savage light glinted in his eyes.

The pain in his hand finally brought him back to his senses. He stood panting, glaring at the driver inside.

The driver was a chubby kid with a baby face, trembling as he stammered out an apology.

"I’m sorry, I didn’t do it on purpose... I’m sorry... I’m a new driver..."

The chubby kid had only started learning to drive a few days ago. Spoiled rotten by his family, he had pestered his parents into buying him a car, and he’d been so eager to show it off that he’d taken it out the moment it was delivered.

As a result, he’d gotten flustered, overshot the turn, and stomped on the accelerator instead of the brake...

Thankfully, he’d finally managed to hit the brake at the last second.

Wu Sheng gritted his teeth, desperately suppressing the urge to beat the pulp out of the kid.

Meanwhile, Tang Yuanxiao had finally made his way over. He looked Su Li up and down. "Are you okay?"

"Are you hurt?"

His voice was shaking, and his whole body trembled.

Today, he finally understood what it felt like to be scared out of his wits.

"I’m fine." Su Li’s fingers were trembling as she looked over at Yu Zhengqing, who was sitting on the ground where she had pushed him.

"Yu Zhengqing, are you okay?"

The storm of shock in Yu Zhengqing’s eyes had yet to subside. He stared blankly at Su Li and shook his head mechanically.

Before Yu Zhengqing could answer, Wu Sheng roared from the side.

"What could possibly be wrong with him? You nearly died pushing him out of the way!"

"Wu Sheng," Su Li called out, her voice faltering. "I’m sorry..."

"Shut up." Seemingly oblivious to the blood dripping from his hand, Wu Sheng kicked the car again to vent his fury, then strode toward Su Li, his face dark.

"Su Li, I’m telling you, if you ever pull a stunt like that again, I’ll... I’ll kill you!"

His eyes were bloodshot, and his face and tone were brimming with murderous intent.

He closed the distance to Su Li in a few large strides, looking as if he truly meant to kill her.

Just as the chubby driver, his face pale with fright, thought Wu Sheng was actually going to kill Su Li, Wu Sheng suddenly reached out and pulled her into his arms.

Wu Sheng held Su Li, holding her so tightly it felt like he was trying to merge her into his very being, so tightly that Su Li couldn’t breathe.

It was only then, held in his arms, that Su Li realized it wasn’t just his hands that were shaking. His entire body was trembling, and so was his voice.

"All my life, I’ve never been afraid of anything. Not heaven, not earth. I’ve never feared a single thing. But today..."

Wu Sheng’s low, trembling voice reached Su Li’s ear. "Today... I was scared to death."

He had been afraid today. More afraid than ever before. So afraid that he’d lost control.

Su Li had shown him what it felt like to be so scared his heart stopped. She had turned him into a coward.

His arms around Su Li tightened unconsciously, again and again. Feeling her warmth, her presence, Wu Sheng’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he murmured in a raw voice.

"Su Li, don’t scare me. I’m begging you, don’t you ever scare me like that again..."

Listening to his voice, feeling him tremble, Su Li’s face was suddenly streaked with tears.

"Wu Sheng, I’m sorry. I was just..."

’I was just trying to save Yu Zhengqing. I just didn’t want him to get hurt.’

’I didn’t mean to scare you, Wu Sheng...’

Standing to the side, Tang Yuanxiao froze, his hand outstretched in midair. He stared at the embracing couple, at Su Li’s tear-streaked face.

His hands clenched into tight fists, and his already reddened eyes became even more bloodshot.

A few steps away, Yu Zhengqing, having recovered from his shock and just gotten to his feet, stopped in his tracks. He stared at the embracing pair, his expression unreadable.

The world was utterly silent, save for Su Li’s suppressed sobs.

After a long moment, Yu Zhengqing moved.

He stood up and took a couple of steps forward. Noticing that the blood from Wu Sheng’s injured hand was staining the back of Su Li’s shirt, he spoke, interrupting her sobs.

"Su Li, your friend’s hand needs to be bandaged."

Hearing Yu Zhengqing’s voice, Wu Sheng closed his eyes for a moment, masking the savage look within them. He took a deep breath and released Su Li.

Su Li hastily wiped her tears away, then gasped when she saw Wu Sheng’s hand.

"There’s so much blood..."

"It’s nothing. Just a scratch," Wu Sheng said, glancing at it nonchalantly. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

"How can you call that a scratch with all this blood? We need to go to a hospital to get it treated and bandaged," Su Li retorted, cradling his hand to examine it.

Wu Sheng was about to argue, but hearing her last sentence, he immediately shut his mouth.

"I’ll go with you," Yu Zhengqing offered. "There’s a hospital just down the road."

"Not necessary," Wu Sheng said, rejecting the offer without hesitation as he shot Yu Zhengqing an icy glare.

Yu Zhengqing’s expression faltered for a second before he looked back up at Su Li. "Thank you, Su Li."

The shock still hadn’t subsided. There were a million things he wanted to say, but his feelings were too complex to put into words. In the end, all that came out were two simple words: "Thank you."

’In that life-or-death moment, he couldn’t understand why Su Li had decided to save him without a second thought, without the slightest hesitation.’

’In that instant, aside from his own terror, the thought of pushing her away had never even crossed his mind.’

’For Su Li to react like that in such a short amount of time... it was as if her decision was pure instinct, made without a single thought.’

’How could he not be stunned by that?’

Su Li could clearly see the complex shock in his eyes.

Su Li shook her head and managed a small, reassuring smile.

"It’s fine. As long as you’re okay, that’s all that matters."

Yu Zhengqing stared at Su Li, stunned.

The tear tracks on her face hadn’t yet dried, yet she looked genuinely relieved, as if she truly meant what she said—that all that mattered was that he was okay.

It was as if his safety was the only thing that mattered. She looked so gratified, without a trace of fear or regret, as if she would truly give her life to ensure he was unharmed.

So utterly resolute.

The joking words of his roommate, the image of Su Li smiling at him through her tears, and a dozen other wild thoughts and fragmented images all flooded his mind.

Yu Zhengqing’s mind was in turmoil. There was so much he wanted to say, so much he wanted to ask, but in the end, he couldn’t get a single word out.

’He’d never known a girl like Su Li could even exist in this world.’

Her actions, combined with the sense of familiarity he’d felt when they first met, gave him an inexplicable feeling of destiny.
