Chapter 135: Chapter 135: Old Witch

Su Guilan peered through the iron gate. The courtyard door wasn’t locked, and the pavilion was in a blind spot from the entrance, so she couldn’t see anyone inside.

She pushed the gate open and went in.

Hearing the gate open, Wen Yaozu instinctively shot up from his chair. His gaze locked onto the middle-aged woman at the entrance, and he recognized her instantly.

’The last time she showed up at the house out of nowhere, I didn’t go after her because I had to protect Xiao Chuan.’

’I can’t let her get away this time.’

Wen Yaozu snatched a broom from beside the pavilion, leaped into the middle of the courtyard, and brandished it with a flourish. "Ha! It’s you again, you old witch! You got away last time, but let’s see you try and escape now."

The words had barely left his mouth when Jiang Chen’s gaze landed on the chubby kid’s face. His youthful cheeks and features bore a slight resemblance to Jiang Ye.

"Who are you?"

"You barge into my home and have the nerve to ask who I am!"

Jiang Chen chuckled, his eyes filled with disdain. "A poor country bumpkin like you could never afford a place like this in your entire life."

Wen Yaozu was completely unfazed. He mimicked the tall, uniformed man’s tone in a mocking, singsong voice, "A poor country bumpkin, could never afford it in your entire life~"

He waved a hand in front of his face as if clearing away dust and asked indifferently, "Where’s Jiang Ci?"

"None of your damn business, you old witch!"

Jiang Chen glared at him. Seeing the boy’s fearless gaze, he strode forward, caught the broom the chubby kid swung at him with one hand, and snapped,

"Since your parents failed to teach you any manners, I’ll teach you today."

With that, he wrenched the broom from Wen Yaozu’s hands, snapped it in two over his knee, and grabbed the boy’s collar with his other hand.

Just as he was about to strike, Yu Qing appeared at the gate and yelled, "You’re a soldier! What kind of man barges into someone’s home to bully a child?"

Jiang Chen froze.

He recognized the woman before him; she was one of Wen Ci’s colleagues from the Northwest Military Region. "This little brat has no manners. I’m just teaching him a lesson on his parents’ behalf. So what?"

"Is it your place to be teaching him? Or should we head to the military base and discuss this officially?"

Yu Qing was using the threat of the base to intimidate Jiang Chen.

She was making it clear that Jiang Chen was trespassing and meddling in affairs that weren’t his. No matter how this escalated, they would be the ones in the right.

Su Guilan stepped in to play the good cop. "How old are you? Don’t stoop to a child’s level."

At this, Jiang Chen released Wen Yaozu’s collar. His eyes narrowed as he warned, word by word, "If you ever call someone an ’old witch’ again..."

He punctuated the threat by clenching his fist.

Wen Yaozu scrambled behind Yu Qing and grumbled, "I guess not all soldiers are good guys."

Yu Qing smiled. "You’ll find scumbags in any profession."

Jiang Chen was about to erupt in anger, but Su Guilan stopped him. She gave him a cold look. "Haven’t you caused enough of an embarrassment?!"

’What happened this morning already caused a huge stir in the family compound. If they caused another scene at the base this afternoon, the Jiang Family would be utterly disgraced.’

Su Guilan turned to Yu Qing, her tone becoming much gentler. "I’m Jiang Ci’s birth mother. I’d like to ask, where has she gone?"

"Jiang Ci? Who’s that?"

Yu Qing feigned ignorance, turning to Wen Yaozu. "Do you know who Jiang Ci is?"

"Don’t know her. You’re looking for the wrong person, old witch. My sister’s name is Wen Ci. Wen, as in my name, Wen Yaozu!"

Jiang Chen frowned.

’Just as I thought,’ he mused. ’This chubby kid is Jiang Ye’s biological younger brother. They’re biological siblings, yet their personalities are worlds apart. Your family of origin really has a huge impact.’

’People in the countryside always value boys over girls. Thank goodness Ye Zi was switched at birth. I can’t even imagine what she would have turned out like under the influence of her biological family.’
