Chapter 116: Chapter 116: How About Taking It Off to See If It’s Injured

Wen Ci’s lips curved. "What do you think?"

Without a word, Huo Jingyuan threw off the quilt covering him. His upturned, fox-like eyes narrowed, and he stared at her with a dark, profound gaze, speaking slowly and deliberately:

"Why don’t I take this off so you can have a closer look and see if I’m injured?"

The man’s tone grew a few shades heavier.

As he spoke, he made a move to take off his clothes.

Wen Ci smiled brilliantly, reaching out to pull the quilt back over him. She waved her hand and explained, "I didn’t mean anything by it. I just hope you focus on your recovery, so you don’t end up less capable than you were before."

Huo Jingyuan: "..."

"Are you subtly mocking me?!"

Wen Ci shrugged. "I said, *so you don’t end up*!"

Huo Jingyuan sighed softly. His injuries were mainly on his upper body and had nothing to do with his lower half. After a moment of contemplation, he lifted the quilt and glanced at his abdomen.

Seeing his action, Wen Ci blinked, tilting her head in confusion. "You didn’t actually injure it, did you?"

"I..." Huo Jingyuan swallowed, then grabbed Wen Ci’s slender, smooth hand. A hint of a plea entered his deep eyes. "Why don’t... you test it out?"

Wen Ci: ???

Her face was a picture of confusion.

’Test what?’

’No, the question is *how* am I supposed to test it?!’

’A hospital room is a public place. To be so reckless here... Is this even right?’

Wen Ci was still lost in thought when... (This part has been censored. Please use your imagination. Her hand was guided under the covers by that rascal.)

Huo Jingyuan let out a breath of relief. A tender smile touched his eyes, and his voice was deep and magnetic. "Looks like there are no problems at all. And no problems with... duration, either."

The tips of Wen Ci’s ears flushed red. She bit her lip shyly, glaring at Huo Jingyuan. "You did that on purpose, didn’t you?"

’That rascal definitely did it on purpose!’

Huo Jingyuan flatly denied it. "No."

"Yes, you did!"

Seeing Wen Ci’s flustered and exasperated look, Huo Jingyuan’s eyes crinkled at the corners, and his lips curved into a slight smile. "Whatever my wife says, goes. In this whole wide world, my wife is number one."

"Hah, you smooth-talker!"

Wen Ci immediately shot back, "Since you say your wife is number one, then you’ll listen to me and stay in Beijing to recover for at least six months before you go back to the Northwest."

The room fell into a brief silence.

However, Wen Ci knew he was worried about his subordinates back in the Northwest. But the most urgent thing was for him to get his health back.

Otherwise, if this led to a latent injury, he’d regret it for the rest of his life.

Seeing that the silence was stretching, Wen Ci thought for a moment, then broke it with a cough. "What’s this? You just said your wife is number one, and now you’re not listening?"

"It’s not that I won’t listen..." Huo Jingyuan replied calmly.

"I know you’re worried about your subordinates, but you have to think of yourself first." Wen Ci paused. "And it’s not just for you. You have to think of me, and of the home we’ll build together."

They had just gotten married. Now that they had formed a family, they had to be considerate of each other’s feelings.

Huo Jingyuan explained, "The doctor said I can be discharged in a few days. I’ll be bored just sitting around in Beijing..."

Suddenly, Wen Ci had an idea that would both keep Huo Jingyuan in Beijing and give him something to do. "After you’re discharged, you can rest for another half a month, then get a temporary transfer to the Beijing Police Station. Going to work and coming home every day won’t be boring!"

In the 1980s, Beijing was quite safe. Soldiers on patrol were a common sight, and there wasn’t much for the police to do, big or small. It was a cushy job.

"A temporary transfer to be a police officer?"

"Mhm."

·

When visiting hours were over, Wen Ci walked back to the military district. She didn’t hurry to the cafeteria to eat, heading to the barracks first. She had returned too late last night.

Worried about disturbing Captain Xu’s rest, she hadn’t gone to pick up Xiao Chuan.

Outside the barracks, Wen Ci asked the soldier on duty to call Xu Wen for her.

She waited outside for a few minutes.

Xu Wen came out holding Xiao Chuan’s hand, his face wreathed in smiles. "Good news. We caught the trafficker who abducted Xiao Chuan, and we’ve found his family."

Wen Ci’s eyes widened. "So fast?"

Only a day had passed, and not only had they caught the trafficker, but they’d also found Xiao Chuan’s relatives. Their efficiency was top-notch.

Wen Ci gave him a thumbs-up. "Captain Xu, you guys are amazing."

It was the first time Xu Wen had been praised by a woman, and he couldn’t help but blush. He lowered his head and smiled shyly. "We’ve already confirmed the identity of Xiao Chuan’s relatives. They’ll be coming from Shanghai in a few days."

Xiao Chuan nodded emphatically. "It’s the uncle Mommy talked about!"

"Uncle??"

Wen Ci gasped. An uncle should be a very close relative. Why would Xiao Chuan phrase it as "the uncle Mommy talked about"?

’Does this mean Xiao Chuan has never met his uncle?’

Xu Wen explained, "Xiao Chuan’s mother cut off ties with her family to marry his father. The two sides have had no contact ever since.

But when his mother’s family learned of her death, they were heartbroken. They never imagined a trafficker would take advantage of the chaos and abduct Xiao Chuan."

Wen Ci nodded.

"In a few days, Xiao Chuan’s uncle will come to Beijing."

"Okay. When his uncle gets here, have him come to our place to pick him up."

·

Wen Ci left the barracks, holding Xiao Chuan’s hand.

Xiao Chuan was in a state of high excitement. As he held Wen Ci’s hand, he swung it uncontrollably. "Big Sister, I’m going to have a home again soon!"

"Mhm."

"I won’t be a kid without a home anymore! As soon as my uncle is done with his work, he’s going to take the first flight to come get me."

"Take a flight?" Wen Ci was surprised for a couple of seconds. In this day and age, anyone who could afford a plane ticket was either a high-ranking official, a person of great importance, or truly wealthy.

"Yep, I talked to my uncle on the phone."

On the way back to the family courtyard, Wen Ci took Xiao Chuan to the cafeteria. She reached out, ruffled his hair, and asked, "Have you had breakfast?"

"Uncle Xu already took me to eat."

Wen Ci laughed out loud. She realized that Xiao Chuan called any man "Uncle" and any girl "Big Sister," reserving "Auntie" only for those with white hair.

Wen Ci got two eggs.

She ate one of them on the way home.

By the time they got home, it was almost eight o’clock.

Wen Ci stood at Wen Yaozu’s door, raised her hand to knock, and called out, "The sun’s been up for ages! Are you going to sleep all day?"

The plan she had made for Wen Yaozu was to wake up at 6:30, increase the number of laps he ran each day, take a one-hour nap, and then get up to start studying.

Xiao Chuan asked curiously, "Big Sister, who’s here?"

"It’s my little brother."

Wen Yaozu had been planning to stay in bed, but hearing the childish voice outside, he shot up from his bed and flung the door open in one smooth motion.

"Sis, who is he?!" he demanded.

Xiao Chuan looked up at the chubby boy in front of him and couldn’t resist poking his round belly. "Big Brother, your tummy is so soft."

"Who’s your big brother," Wen Yaozu retorted grumpily.

But seeing how thin and frail the little boy was, his tone softened considerably. Though he might throw his weight around at school, he never bullied the weak for no reason.

’Anyone he bullied totally deserved it!’
