Chapter 28: The bells of the Battle

-Tang! Tang! Tang!

Right when the flare-fire was seen in the high sky, the city gates rang the battle bells that the people of the Sungrade were well familiar with.

The creatures from beyond the Demonic forest were coming.

Standing between them and this city was a wall standing a hundred and fifty meters and stretched to an entire mile.

There were three gates that led to this city but only two that touched the demon forest, thus the emergency protocol was activated the moment the emergency was perceived by the city.

The Six cradles were locked down and the magical barrier that surrounded them was activated.

The same happened with the city. A thin invisible shield was activated all around the city. However, as thin as it was, the mages that reinforced it with their elemental powers and the dense layer of Mana prided on its strength.

Even the Unique ranked demonic beasts would not pass this barricade.

Furthermore, at the command of the patriarch of the Sungrade, all the guests that were present at the colosseum were escorted to a safer place beneath the city.

-Ooooooooooooong!

The wall was then manned by the mages, the knights, the archers, the battle units. The finest tamers of Sungrade waited for the inevitable attack that was going to barge at their gates.

On top of that, the younger children were sent back to the city’s central areas around the castle where they were safer.

The Proof of Worth was suspended for the time being. What was coming mattered more to any of them than the trash that must be thrown out of the family.

"Flora, what is the status?" The Patriarch of the Sungrade got in contact with his daughter who somehow had found the demon army.

He went to her himself without waiting and, through her, he got to know the level of the army that was coming for them this time.

"It is already too late." The Lord was already hatching. It was too late and going in there, fighting inside the forest would only prove disadvantageous for them.

They would not be able to deal with them here, so, he took his daughter and the brave scouts that were still in hiding and teleported them out of the forest with his powers.

-Zaaaaaaaa...

He was a powerful man that could kill several demons on his own, but he was also wise enough to not underestimate those wicked things.

The people of the city may not have fought a ’lord’ of the demons, but as someone who had fought the true demons, he knew just how wicked their kind was.

He had the power, but he knew he was not almighty before the scale of the force coming for them.

So, he moved.

He commanded the guards, the city petrol, the knights, the mages, and asked the guests that were put under protection for any help that they could provide to their city.

"Grrrrrrr...!"

"GHAAAAAAAA!"

"NIGHHHHHHHHHH!"

-ZAAAAAAAAA!

Creatures, strange by looks and ugly of heart, were marching towards them with a ’thing’ that would not spare any living ’pure’ thing that walked this earth.

The Lords were born to rule their kind. That was the rule of nature.

The nature was equal and fair. It did not discriminate: it was the mother that birthed and the sword that cut down what she gave birth to when the time came.

He, as an Assimilator, understood the nature and the nature of these demonic beings much better than the others.

He may have been caught by surprise if they had attacked out of the blue, but this time, he had the time to prepare.

And by the grace of all the gods watching over them, he did prepare thoroughly.

So thoroughly that war preparations would seem bleak in front of the fortified Sungrade frontier.

"What we are facing is unlike anything you’ve seen until now." Gathered on the wall, the patriarch floated in the air and looked at the people, brave people that had gathered before him.

"A lord, by its inherent nature, rules." The reason those demonic beasts had gathered around the ’egg’ was not only to protect it, but also to follow it.

Its very presence made them submit to it. That ’thing’ by birth, was noble to those demonic beasts.

However, that was no good thing for the ones who would get devoured, fucked, and corrupted by them.

Too many atrocities occur when demonic powers are involved.

"We are not going to fight demonic beasts in this battle." Looking at the people that included his wife and the knight commander, his eldest daughter... as well as his youngest son, he clenched his heavy heart.

If it weren’t for Flora and Lady Markeet’s strong insistence,he would never allow a child to fight in a battle like this.

He was gifted. He was a genius. And as a tamer guarding the Salamanders, he knew what that little white bird sitting carelessly on his head actually was.

Someone as special as him must not die in a place like this...

"You will be fighting an army commanded by a leader." As a father, he had responsibilities. As a lord, he had responsibilities. As a guardian, he had responsibilities.

But above all, as a Sungrade patriarch, repelling and annihilating these demons was required of him.

"This is war, people."

Grim as it may be, that was the truth.

"Let us burn those wretched things to ashes."

-Oooooooooooooooooooong...!

The human army was ready.

The demon army was now approaching the periphery of the Sungrade barricade.

Magic of the spirits, aura of the knights, the potions of the alchemists, and the items of the magic engineers that manned the wall. A war was not merely fought with hands and armor... Here, the enemy was children of nature themselves.

And they were here to protect their families. Their children.

The people they did not know.

And also the world that lay beyond the horizon of Sungrade.
