Chapter 79: Firearms

Author’s note: I planned on going into details about how to use firearms, but I don’t think I’ll be able to do that for safety purposes. Thank you.

Amera’s POV

I spent a few more days at the hospital and eventually returned home. Since I wasn’t able to start my training last week, my first session has been rescheduled for today. It’s Wednesday, and I’ve been expecting my instructor, Indigo. At exactly 2:50 p.m., Indigo arrived at the house.

"Let’s go to the firing range," she said, taking me to an open field.

"We’re going to start by shooting those apples," she pointed to apples tied on cans. "But before that, you need to choose your firearm. I brought some for you." She walked to her big bag and took out about seven pistols, arranging them on the table.

"None of these guns are loaded; I want you to choose the one that best fits your hand."

"The one that fits my hand?" I murmured as I went through them. I picked up one gun and held it, but it wasn’t comfortable, so I set it down and picked a different one. The new one was a bit longer; it didn’t fit my hand perfectly, but I liked it.

"No, I don’t think that one will do," she said, examining it. "Pick another one."

I put the gun down and chose a different one, but it was shorter. Finally, I went to the second-to-last gun on the table and picked it up. After holding it, I realized it fit my hand perfectly.

I turned to Indigo. "What is the name of this gun?" I asked.

"It’s a Smith & Wesson Shield EZ."

"You made a good choice; the Smith & Wesson Shield EZ is easier to use and disassemble, and it’s designed for easy cleaning," she informed me.

"Oh," I said, liking the sound of that. "Smith," I added, looking at my new gun as I started to point it in all directions, pretending I was shooting a target. She stopped me.

"No, you can’t do that. The gun is not loaded, but that doesn’t mean you should play with it," she said firmly.

"What? Why?" I raised a brow, confused. Since it’s not loaded, why am I not allowed to play with it? It’s not like I’m going to die.

"There are six basic safety rules you should know before you use a gun. I’ll list them for you." free𝑤ebnovel.com

"First, you have to treat all guns as if they are loaded. That means playing around with guns is not allowed," she stated.

"Huh."

"Second, keep your gun pointed in the safest direction. You also broke this rule just now," she said.

"The third rule: keep your fingers—" she came closer and pushed my finger off the trigger, "—keep your fingers off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot."

"And the fourth one: know your target and look beyond its surroundings, too. Your target is that apple over there," she pointed. "You have to look beyond the apple before you shoot; you shouldn’t only focus on the apple," she instructed.

"Alright."

"The fifth rule: know how to properly operate your gun," she continued. "I’m going to teach you how to operate Lady Smith."

"And the final rule is to always keep your gun unloaded until you are ready to use it. Just like now—there are no bullets in the gun. It’s totally empty. But I’m going to teach you how to load the gun and how to fire it."

"Handguns are usually very difficult firearms. It takes a lot of time before one can master them, and this is because they have shorter barrels, compact sizes, and sight radiuses, but the Lady Smith was made for women’s use, so it’ll be easier for you to learn."

"Hopefully," I murmured, continuing to listen to her. "Okay."

She went to her bag and started mumbling as she searched inside. "Lady Smith only holds 8+1 capacity; it was built for personal protection, and the grip safety is standard on all models. The tactile loaded chamber indicator can be seen or felt, and the single-action trigger has—"

"Hold on," I stopped her. "I can’t understand what you’re saying. I don’t know what that means," I sighed.

She found what she was searching for: magazines.

"Do you know what they are called?" she asked, displaying them on the table.

"Magazines," I smiled.

"Yes, you’re correct; they’re called mags for short. Lady Smith specifically uses a single-stack magazine, and as I told you earlier, the standard capacity is eight rounds." After her explanation, she looked at me. "I have another question for you."

"Yes, ask."

"What are they used for?" freewebnovel.cσ๓

They? Does she mean magazines?

"Magazines?" I asked.

"Yes," she answered.

"Isn’t that a simple question?"

"I know it’s simple, but I need you to answer it. I need to be sure that you know what it’s meant for. If you don’t give me a correct answer, I’m going to correct you," she said.

"Okay, a magazine is an ammunition storage."

"Yes, you’re correct; it’s ammunition storage. It acts as a container for cartridges, holding them in a specific arrangement and pushing them into the chamber of the gun when the action is cycled. So, in short, it allows for multiple shots without having to reload after each shot," she explained.

"I already know that. I also watch movies, and I’ve seen similar situations portrayed," I murmured.

"This is not a movie, Amera. You could die or kill someone using this. You have to understand its usage so you don’t make a single mistake. Mistakes aren’t allowed; you could spend the rest of your life in prison. Do you understand?" She fixed her gaze on me.

"I do," I murmured. "And it’s not Miss Amera; call me Amera," I corrected her. "You promised that you could call me by my name."

"My mistake, Amera."

"Thank you, Indigo."

"Alright, I’ll show you how to assemble and disassemble your gun from start to finish. Then after that, we’ll move to the field, and I’ll instruct you on how to shoot. Hopefully, you’ll be able to hit a target today."

I sighed. "I hope so."
