Chapter 5: New Plans

=======

⟨Fortress Wall⟩

⟨Agricultural Land⟩

⟨Watch Tower⟩

⟨Wooden Houses⟩

⟨Tower of Souls⟩

========

Apart from the [Beast Trap], these were the five different things whose blueprints the system provided Edgar.

’It’s just as I thought, I am a lot different from traditional Builders.’

Edgar rubbed his chin as he looked at the items that he could craft right now. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

He looked through the details of all the items one by one.

---

⟨Level 1 Fortress Wall⟩

Can withstand attacks from low-level Nightmares and provide shelter.

Cost: 5 Nightmare Stones per meter.

---

⟨Level 1 Agricultural Land⟩

An area in the Fortress that is enhanced and greatly reduces the growth time of crops.

Cost: 2 Nightmare Stones per plot.

---

⟨Level 1 Watch Tower⟩

Keeps an eye on enemies and deals damage to low-level Nightmares with light.

Cost: 10 Nightmare Stones.

---

⟨Level 1 Wooden Houses⟩

A simple house that provides shelter.

Cost: 2 Nightmare Stones.

---

⟨Level 1 Tower of Souls⟩

Can refine the bodies of Nightmare creatures to obtain special resources.

Cost: 25 Nightmare Stones.

---

Edgar frowned when he saw the cost of making them.

’I am too broke to craft any of them....’

With his current resources, it would be nearly impossible to create anything.

He took in a deep breath and thought. ’One step at a time.’

He stared at the cost of making the Fortress Wall.

That was his priority as it would reduce his chances of dying by a lot.

’I would need at least 200 Nightmare Stones to create a decent Fortress Wall....’

Edgar gave up on the idea of creating a wall anytime soon.

He would need to kill a shit ton of Nightmare monsters to have that kind of reserve.

’For now, let’s kill some Nightmare monsters and get decent savings.’

He took in a deep breath and stared at the Nightmare Stone in his hand.

He had a vague memory of the previous Edgar trying to awaken his ability by absorbing Nightmare Stones.

Both his parents were powerful Aberrants, they could have been called the backbone of their Clan.

His mother was a Level 5 Builder while his father was a powerful Knight.

Part of the reason why Edgar was tolerated by Albert was because there was a small chance of him awakening as well.

But once he failed, Albert didn’t think twice before throwing him away.

’What an irony, they both died protecting the Clan from a Nightmare Tide and the very Clan sent their son to die.’

Edgar chuckled softly at the cruel fate of his predecessor.

He drew in a deep breath and lay down on his rough bed.

’Thankfully, I didn’t inherit the previous Edgar’s feelings otherwise I would have returned to the Clan and showed my newly attained strength.’

He closed his eyes and decided to sleep for most of the day.

---

In no time, the Eternal Night returned once again, tearing through the dull grey-black fog.

Edgar, who had already gotten into better shape, sat close to the ’Unbroken Fire’ that illuminated the nearby fortress.

When the night fully descended, he could feel dozens of hungry eyes on him.

They felt eerie, bizarre, and the Eternal Night only amplified the feeling.

Edgar looked at the [Beast Trap] in his hand that he had tied with a rope.

By his side was the old butler Oswald who was looking at him with concern.

"It’s dangerous, young master." He said in a gentle voice. "What if we anger them by doing such a thing?"

"They are already angry." Edgar replied with a chuckle. "Don’t worry, I will keep you safe."

"That’s my duty...."

Oswald said in a fleeting voice while Edgar stood up.

He threw the [Beast Trap] into the darkness and tied its rope to a pole. Edgar also placed the dagger nearby to kill the Nightmare monsters.

Along with that, he also grabbed the sling he had made yesterday and looked around into the darkness.

Unlike on his first day, Edgar was much calmer and clear-headed.

He drew in a deep breath and placed a stone on the leather part of the sling before swinging it.

’Come on. Give me your Nightmare Stones!’

He threw the stone into the darkness!!

The first three stones didn’t hit anything but it didn’t affect Edgar much.

’I am practically throwing arrows into the darkness, there is little chance for anything to catch the stray.’

Just as he threw another stone, a miserable sound echoed throughout the place.

Before long, a glowing object appeared not too far from the fortress area.

Edgar quickly grabbed the handmade stick and scooped the Nightmare Stone inside.

Even though some creatures tried to grab the stick, Edgar was quick enough.

At the same time, the rope of the [Beast Trap] began to shake violently.

Edgar quickly pulled the trap back inside the range of the ’Unbroken Fire’.

Trapped inside the steel frame was a rabbit with a short horn on its forehead. Its body was covered in pure white fur.

Its eyes were red as blood and it was trying to bite through the trap with its two large teeth.

When it saw Edgar, the creature tried to bite him as well but it couldn’t break free from the restraint of the trap.

Edgar didn’t waste a single second. He drew in a deep breath and took the dagger.

"Let me do it, young master!" Oswald insisted, grabbing the dagger from his hand.

He was trying to look for ways he could still be useful.

Edgar didn’t say anything and only nodded while passing the dagger.

He picked up the sling and began to take shots into the darkness.

Oswald stabbed the dagger into the creature and with a squealing sound, the Snow Hand Rabbit lost its life.

Taking the creature out of the trap, Oswald waited for a few seconds as its horn shed apart and the Nightmare Stone appeared from its head.

Oswald threw the [Beast Trap] back into the darkness.

Edgar also got lucky as he hit another beast not too far away. Within a few seconds, another glowing object appeared in the darkness.

His eyes lit up as he quickly used the stick to bring the object closer.

But on closer look, it was different from a Nightmare Stone. It looked more like a fist-sized clay ball.

’What is this...?’

Edgar wondered while picking it up.

Oswald noticed the object as well and he couldn’t help but shout in excitement.

"It’s a Nightmare Shard!!"
