Chapter 15: Base

Edgar looked through the three paths he had in front of him.

’All three of them are increases in skill rather than qualitative changes.’

He had hoped to get a skill that could rapid-fire and kill multiple Nightmares at once.

And the second option was the closest to such a skill.

’Though, the poison attack is also quite tempting.’

Edgar rubbed his chin, thinking calmly about his decision.

After a while, he chose the second path with the active skill.

The thirty Nightmare Stones flew in the air and cracked as white liquid swept out of them.

The liquid began to cover the Level 2 ⟨Watch Tower⟩ like a cloak before solidifying over it.

When the liquid cooled down, the tower had significant changes to it.

Another layer of stone and wood had covered the outer area, making it much sturdier.

A better staircase was also added that connected to the upper part.

Edgar stepped up and walked towards the extended platform with a railing around it.

’This is really cool...’

The wind breezed past Edgar’s face as he stood on the platform looking at the barren land around him.

Even though most of the place was covered with fog, Edgar could feel how isolated his fortress was.

’Damn, those Atreus Clan fuckers, they really want me dead.’

Cursing the clan the previous Edgar belonged to, he looked at the centre of the ⟨Watch Tower⟩.

The inside was much more similar to the lighthouse he had seen in his previous life.

A single fire in the middle burned brightly that reflected the ’Unbroken Fire’. Around it were two different lenses and a net-like structure.

At the outer edge were engravings for ten different slots for Nightmare Stones.

’Is it for activating the ’Light Net’ skill?’ Edgar thought. ’So, I can fire ten shots before reloading?’

He walked down and picked up ten Nightmare Stones and placed them on the engravings.

With a hum, the light burned a little more brightly.

Edgar turned to look at Andrew who was standing on the side.

Thinking quickly, he took out seven stones, created a Level 2 ⟨Beast Trap⟩, and passed it to him.

"Can you dig a hole and create a trap like the one I made yesterday?"

Andrew nodded his head. "Of course, young master."

He quickly rushed out of the fortress zone.

After completing the task, Edgar created another ⟨Watch Tower⟩ and upgraded it to Level 2.

But this time instead of increasing the range of the beam, he added a crossbow to the tower.

As the wooden crossbow the size of two metres hung on the tower, Edgar felt much more assured.

Having his fill of the breakfast made by Lady Viera, Edgar lay down in his new bed before falling asleep.

---

Edgar woke up once it was already close to the Eternal Night descending again.

He rubbed his groggy eyes and walked out of his house.

His body felt rather tired but he was more or less in peak condition.

Once out, Edgar found Andrew and Oswald close to the ’Unbroken Fire’, talking about something.

He walked towards them and sat down beside the fire as well.

The creation of the tower didn’t affect the fire much as its light swept from the lower part of the tower.

"What are you guys talking about?" Edgar asked, looking at them.

"Andrew was reminiscing about his previous clan." Oswald replied. "I was just listening."

"The Bullan Clan, right?" Edgar looked at Andrew. "I haven’t heard much about them."

Andrew’s black hair was a mess as he wasn’t much into grooming, his brown eyes drifted around the place.

"Our clan is rather secretive." Andrew said. "They don’t like to deal with others after what happened forty years ago."

Edgar curiously looked at him. "And what could that be?"

"Actually, the Bullan Clan was once part of an expedition team that set out to find the treasure in Norwood Mountain."

Andrew shifted in his seat as he stole glances toward his mother’s house.

"The Atreus Clan, Freeman Clan, and Yamhad Clan were also part of the expedition but every one of our clan members who entered the mountain died."

"The Yamhad Clan also lost all their members except one." Oswald added. "That guy is now the current head of their clan."

"Theo, huh?" Edgar mumbled to himself before he looked at Andrew.

"So, does your clan think the other clans killed your clan members?"

Andrew nodded his head. "That’s what we were told."

Edgar rubbed his chin looking at the young boy. ’He doesn’t seem to be lying.’ ƒгeewebnovёl.com

But Edgar couldn’t understand why only his clan members died.

He cleared the foggy thoughts and asked the main question. "What is this treasure about?"

"It’s a treasure left behind by our Bullan Clan ancestor in Norwood Mountain five kilometres from here." Andrew replied with a hint of pride in his voice. "They say it’s a treasure left behind by a Level 10 Fortress Owner."

Oswald quickly rebuked him. "There is no such thing as a Level 10 Fortress, kid." fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

Andrew pursed his lips but he didn’t rebuke him, he only lowered his head.

Edgar’s mind was somewhere else. ’How did someone defeat a Level 10 Fortress...?’

The more he thought about it the bleaker his expression became.

’Are the Nightmares really that dangerous that they can even uproot such a fortress?’

Edgar rubbed his temples and decided not to think about it.

He stood up and began preparing himself for the Eternal Night once again.

With one Level 3 and one Level 2 ⟨Watch Tower⟩, Edgar was more at ease.

He quickly checked the three traps and the one that he asked Andrew to bury.

Once done with it, Edgar walked inside the safety of the fortress and looked at the sky.

The murky dull grey-black fog began to disperse, giving way to the Eternal Night.

Edgar waited close to the ’Unbroken Fire’ as the light from the tower illuminated the area around him.

’More Grass-slugs?’

Edgar couldn’t help but grin when he noticed the weird creatures from yesterday.

But his smile dimmed when he noticed something else.

Along with the Grass-slug Nightmares, there was another Nightmare floating in the air.

A grim thought crossed Edgar’s mind.

’....Ghosts?’
