Chapter 1803: Order for a Baron
A killing contract.
This wasn’t the first time Adam had faced such a task, but usually the wording was different.
It wasn’t a murder, but a hunt for a specific monster because its materials were valuable or it posed a threat to the region.
In the past, Adam constantly took on various missions. It was his way of getting stronger, just like for many other Phantoms, but the stronger he became, the less necessary it was.
He no longer needed money or any help from the government. His only goal was to create his Grand Stars, and to do that, he had to fulfill his conditions.
In fact, taking on missions in such a situation would negatively impact him. He would be wasting time on something that couldn’t make him stronger, which meant it would be a mistake.
The last time Adam took a mission from the Citadel was when he first went to the Tarnished Lands. He was supposed to kill a monster, and he handled the task.
But now, Farla wasn’t offering him a monster hunt, she was offering him a contract to kill a Baron.
"A Baron? You do know I’m not a Second Rank Phantom, right?" Adam crossed his arms over his chest.
Farla nodded deeply.
"Of course. However, we know what you’re capable of. You managed to defeat Zin and that guy, one of the strongest First Circle monsters in the whole world. If our target were at a higher level, I wouldn’t have offered this to you. But I think you’ll want to take this mission yourself."
Adam raised an eyebrow, confused.
"Yeah? Why? This is my first time going to the Gray Sea and the far reaches of the Tarnished Lands. Why should I take this mission? I have a much more important goal."
"I understand that. Still, this will be a good opportunity for you to test your strength. Besides, you are a human after all."
Adam didn’t understand what that meant or what Farla was trying to say, but very soon everything became clear to him.
A hologram appeared above her watch, and several windows displaying photographs appeared before Adam.
Each photo showed dead bodies, victims of the Phantoms. Every death was brutal. Some had their heads torn off, one woman’s body was torn in two, and from others, only a hand remained.
The photos kept appearing, while the old ones faded away.
This was no coincidence, as the number of victims in the new photos kept growing until the final photo appeared, showing a hill made up of dead bodies.
Adam frowned. freeweɓnovel.cѳm
Sure, this wasn’t the first or even the tenth time he’d seen scenes like this. Even during his first missions, he had seen many Phantoms die either from a powerful monster’s random attack or because they had misjudged their own strength.
This was the fate that awaited most Phantoms who regularly ventured into the Dead Lands, whether to complete missions or for personal growth.
However, Adam had never seen anything on this scale.
"All these photos. There are different people in each one, aren’t there?"
Farla nodded, her expression remaining calm.
"That’s right. What I showed you were this Baron’s first victims, and the mountain of corpses at the end is the last thing this Baron did before fleeing to the Gray Sea."
Tap.
Farla tapped the screen, and a list of numerous names with photos and levels appeared before Adam. More than a hundred lines flashed before him, quickly scrolling to the end of the list.
"These are all the victims of a Baron whom we are asking you to kill."
"I see." Adam nodded deeply, his brow furrowed. "But what happened? Is there any reason why this monster decided to attack the Phantoms?"
Farla shook her head.
"We doubt that this Baron wanted anything from the Phantoms. Most likely, these murders were simply a way for this Baron to vent his anger over another situation. He is one of those Barons who, for some reason, had to flee to the Gray Sea." ƒгeewebnovёl.com
Adam remembered Aiden’s words. Now he knew what monsters might be waiting for him at the Gray Sea.
"I gather the killings took place in different locations and at different levels?"
The list, among the many slain Phantoms, included practically every level. Adam saw many K2 and K3 levels, among them were several K1 and even K4 level Phantoms.
"Yes. He killed some while they were on missions. Those Phantoms’ deaths were the easiest to identify. Others were unlucky enough to cross his path on the way to the Gray Sea. He’s fast and strong, and he possesses a multitude of abilities that allowed him to evade Frida’s gaze and hide from other, stronger Phantoms."
Adam nodded deeply.
He knew that, for the most part, the Dead Lands were a safe area for K4-Phantoms and below.
The Lords from other lands couldn’t risk exposing themselves to attack just to kill first-rank phantoms. There was no point in that.
"So, basically, you’re asking me to kill this bastard, who’s a powerful monster, but at the same time, he fled to the Gray Sea from even stronger monsters. Meanwhile, he killed over a hundred Phantoms of various levels, just to feel better about himself?" Adam tried to summarize everything he knew about his potential target.
Farla nodded.
"That’s pretty harsh, but you’re not wrong. I understand you don’t know any of these Phantoms, but I’m sure these photos stirred up deep anger within you."
Adam didn’t deny it. No matter what he’d gone through on his path, he would always care about the deaths of other Phantoms, people just like him who’d wanted to achieve their dreams in the Dead Lands, but who’d been less fortunate than he had.
"Let’s say I really did get angry. But what about you, Farla? What does a human like you feel? You’ve lived at least half a thousand years. Do you still feel anything when you see Phantoms dying?"
Without hesitation, Farla raised her gaze, staring intently at Adam.
"You can be sure of that, Adam. If I had the chance, I’d tear that Baron to pieces and put on a public display of his brutal execution."
Adam chuckled.
At that moment, he made up his mind.
