Chapter 349: Chapter 322: Human Nature, the Heart of Man
Wen Ying listened closely. The sound seemed to be coming from the hallway.
’No wonder they keep you inside at night in these horror movie setups. A normal person would be scared to death.’
The sound was like a swarm of ants on the move, causing both physical and psychological discomfort.
Wen Ying finished her instant noodles and drank a bottle of water.
Then she stood up. "Should we go take a look?"
The words had barely left her mouth when she heard a THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!
The knocking grew louder, starting as a light tap before turning into a heavy pounding, as if someone were hammering on the door with their fist.
The door shook with the impacts. The force behind it was immense.
’Wen Ying wasn’t sure if the door could hold.’
Zizi, zizi, zizi...
Suddenly, a small crack appeared in the wall behind her bed. A slip of paper was tucked inside. Wen Ying pulled it out. The handwriting on it was rather ugly: Turn off the light, be quiet, play dead.
It was just those seven words.
Wen Ying understood. It was a warning from a kind soul next door.
Wen Ying followed the instructions, turning off the light, lying down on the bed, and closing her eyes.
[This plot twist doesn’t fit Doctor Wen’s M.O. Shouldn’t she just come out swinging?]
[That was her image after entering the mental asylum, sure, but she gets tired too. It’s normal for her to want to rest, right?]
[Yeah! Doctor Wen is Superman, but even Superman gets tired!]
[Stop making a thing out of Doctor Wen resting! I just like watching her sleep!]
[I’m just analyzing the plot. I just feel like this doesn’t fit the persona Doctor Wen has had since entering the fog. I didn’t mean anything else by it.]
[Okay, we get it. Great analysis. Don’t do it again.]
After the light went out, the knocking continued.
But after a few minutes, the sound vanished.
Wen Ying opened her eyes. She could see clearly, even in the pitch-black darkness.
"I doubt that thing is gone. It’s probably looking for another way into my room. Now, where would it come from?"
Just as Wen Ying was wondering, a sound from the storage room grew louder.
The storage room door swung open.
"Well, no need to guess anymore. It’s in."
Wen Ying lay motionless, her eyes wide open, watching the dark figure approach.
The dark figure walked toward Wen Ying, stopping in front of her window to stare at her.
A minute passed, then two...
Five whole minutes passed!
Finally, the dark figure reached out a hand toward Wen Ying’s body.
"Aren’t you tired? After five whole minutes, I was getting tired of holding my breath."
Wen Ying’s voice made the dark figure jump.
But his next move was even faster, a lunge for Wen Ying’s neck.
He meant to subdue Wen Ying in one move!
Just as his fingers were about to touch her neck, his arm froze, unable to move another inch.
A powerful grip had seized his arm!
"I’ve been wondering what you are. Why don’t we turn on the lights and let everyone get a good look?"
And just like that, Wen Ying grabbed the figure’s arm, dragged him across the room, and flipped on the dorm light.
The man squeezed his eyes shut against the harsh light before opening them again.
"When did you realize I was here?" the man asked, his gaze dark.
’How could this woman have possibly found me?’
’He’d snuck in when she left and hadn’t moved a muscle since hiding in the storage room.’
’With his patience and his skills, he shouldn’t have failed.’
And yet, he had!
’Did this woman know he was hiding here the whole time?’
The implications were terrifying.
’This woman wasn’t nearly as stupid as everyone thought.’
"Just now," Wen Ying said, her nonchalant tone making the man falter.
’Just now?’
’She must be lying.’
’Just as I thought. This woman isn’t as stupid as she seems. She’s trying to trick me into revealing something!’
"I thought the thing that was knocking had gotten in. I was actually curious to see what it was. I didn’t expect it to be a human like you. Did everyone see that clearly? When you’re out in the world, it’s hard to know what’s in a person’s heart. So never assume you can trust someone just because they’re human. You have to know that in a place like this, the one trying to hurt you is very likely human."
Of course, Wen Ying was addressing the livestream with that last part.
"Who are you talking to?" The man looked around warily. He couldn’t see any accomplices.
’As far as anyone knew, this woman was a loner.’
’But now he was starting to panic. Could everyone have been wrong about her?’
’Was she a wolf in sheep’s clothing, luring her enemies into a trap?’
’But the dorm room was so small!’
’Besides the storage room he’d been hiding in, there weren’t any other corners where someone could hide.’
