Chapter 65: Chapter 65: He Understood Everything
With that, Lydia Wynn walked to the back of the car and gestured for the driver to open the trunk.
The driver glanced at Alaric Blackwood, a troubled look on his face.
"If you’re sick, go to the hospital. You don’t need to move anything."
After speaking, Alaric Blackwood instructed the driver, "Bring the gifts later. Take her to a doctor first."
The driver nodded. Just as he was about to help Lydia Wynn back into the car, she pushed his hand away and forced a pale smile at Alaric Blackwood. "It’s nothing, Mr. Blackwood. I just have a slight fever. It’s not that serious. I’ll go home, take some medicine, and I’ll be fine after a good night’s sleep."
This was the root of Alaric Blackwood’s dislike for his assistant. freewebnøvel.com
She just wouldn’t listen.
"Assistant Wynn, get in the car and go to the hospital."
Alaric Blackwood’s tone left no room for argument.
It wasn’t just a slight fever; she was burning up. This shouldn’t be delayed.
Lydia Wynn was stubborn. "Mr. Blackwood, I’m really fine."
His temper flared. "You want to move the boxes, is that it? Fine. You move them."
’What kind of CEO has to put up with this nonsense...’
He pulled the key from the Maybach’s ignition, grabbed Sophie Shaw’s hand, and pulled her into the house.
Seeing his furrowed brow, Sophie Shaw asked in confusion, "Why are you so angry with your assistant?"
"An assistant who’s disobedient and argumentative... Even The Monk would feel the need to put his golden circlet on her and chant the tightening spell."
"..."
The driver came in carrying several gift boxes, followed by a swaying Lydia Wynn.
She was holding just one box, which had a note on it: "Fragile, Handle with Care."
However, the moment Lydia Wynn stepped inside, she stumbled and pitched forward.
The gift box slipped from her grasp and crashed to the floor with the sound of something shattering.
Hearing the crash, Sophie Shaw looked over to see Lydia Wynn collapsed on the entryway floor, the gift box lying beside her.
The driver heard the commotion, stopped in his tracks, and turned to see what had happened.
Only Alaric Blackwood didn’t spare a single glance toward the entryway. Instead, he ordered the driver, "Keep moving them in."
As the words left his mouth, he pulled his phone from his trouser pocket and called an ambulance.
While he was on the phone, Sophie Shaw had already rushed to Lydia Wynn’s side. "Miss Wynn?"
Seeing that Lydia Wynn was completely unconscious, Sophie Shaw grabbed her arm. She couldn’t just leave her lying on the floor and tried to help her further into the house.
"Come and help."
Sophie Shaw called out to Alaric Blackwood and the driver for help.
Feeling herself being dragged, Lydia Wynn’s brow furrowed slightly. She fluttered her eyes open and shot a vicious glare at Sophie Shaw.
"Miss Shaw, you’re hurting me."
Hearing her voice, Sophie Shaw looked down, surprised to find her awake.
"Are you okay, Miss Wynn?"
Lydia Wynn had already wiped the malice from her expression, her eyes now filled with disappointment.
She thought that if she was this sick, Alaric Blackwood wouldn’t be so indifferent. But he was just sitting on the sofa, showing no intention of helping her. Tears instantly welled in her eyes.
"Miss Wynn?"
Sophie Shaw assumed her foul mood was due to her illness. Sick people, after all, were often emotional and vulnerable.
"Miss Wynn, come lie down on the sofa for a bit. The ambulance will be here soon."
She had heard Alaric Blackwood make the call.
But since Alaric Blackwood wouldn’t help, she had to call the driver over to carry Lydia Wynn to the living room sofa.
"I’m giving you a few more days off. Don’t come back to the office until next Monday."
Alaric Blackwood seized the opportunity to extend Lydia Wynn’s vacation.
He was supposed to be on his marriage leave, and his two assistants were supposed to be off as well. Just thinking about Lydia Wynn’s stubbornness gave him a headache. The problem was, she had been personally recruited by Quentin Blackwood and groomed for the position.
He didn’t have the authority to fire her outright. Besides, he knew her grandmother had recently recovered from a serious illness and was now in a nursing home. Lydia Wynn needed the money; she couldn’t lose this job.
Lydia Wynn lay on the sofa, directly across from Alaric Blackwood.
She gazed at him with tear-filled eyes, looking pitiful and innocent.
Without a word, Alaric Blackwood reached for the tablet on the coffee table and tapped the screen a few times.
He was reviewing the security footage from after Lydia Wynn had delivered the car.
The car had been parked in the courtyard since just after three o’clock yesterday afternoon. After delivering it, Lydia Wynn hadn’t left.
She had remained in the driver’s seat until nightfall. As darkness fell and the temperature dropped, Lydia Wynn opened the driver’s door and let the cold wind pour in.
She had even taken off her coat...
He had been wondering why she was still here today when he’d asked her to drop off the car yesterday. Now, it all made sense.
His brows knitted together. He exited the video feed, tossed the tablet back onto the coffee table, and went straight upstairs.
Alaric Blackwood retreated to the study. He didn’t make an appearance when the ambulance arrived.
It was Sophie Shaw who let the paramedics in.
A short while later, the paramedics carried Lydia Wynn out on a stretcher and loaded her into the ambulance.
After the ambulance departed, the Blackwood family’s driver left as well.
The gift boxes were all stacked on the living room coffee table, forming a small mountain.
Sophie Shaw brought the box that had been dropped in the entryway over to the coffee table. She carefully unwrapped it, only to find a traditional blue-and-white porcelain tea set inside.
It was completely shattered.
The moment she opened the box, her finger was cut by a sharp shard wedged in the lid.
A sharp pain shot through her fingertip. Beads of blood welled up and dripped onto the floor.
She grabbed a tissue and pressed it against her bleeding finger. Hearing footsteps on the stairs, she looked up to see Alaric Blackwood hurrying down.
He saw the blood on the floor and her hand pressed tightly against her finger.
"What happened?"
He quickened his pace. When he saw the shattered tea set she had opened, his brow tightened.
"Why would you open it if you knew it was broken?"
Sophie Shaw gave a wry smile. "I didn’t know what was inside. Besides, I thought maybe not all of it was broken."
As it turned out, her efforts were pointless.
The tea set was, in fact, completely shattered.
Alaric Blackwood turned to get the first-aid kit. Taking her hand, he began to treat the cut with a serious expression.
The wound wasn’t deep, just a small cut, and the bleeding stopped quickly.
Alaric Blackwood applied a bandage, quickly tidied up the first-aid kit and put it back, then picked up the box with the shattered tea set and threw it in the outdoor trash bin.
When Alaric Blackwood strode back in, she thought of Lydia Wynn at the hospital all alone and couldn’t help but ask, "Should we notify Assistant Wynn’s family?"
She remembered that Lydia Wynn had been completely dazed when she was put in the ambulance.
Alaric Blackwood sat down beside her. Glancing at the pile of gift boxes on the coffee table, he picked one up and began unwrapping it. "Her parents are deceased," he said. "Her only living relative is her grandmother, who’s in a nursing home."
"Doesn’t that mean she has no one to look after her?"
"She’s an adult..."
"I’ll go to the hospital to check on her."
Sophie Shaw said, getting to her feet.
Lydia Wynn had previously brought her breakfast at the hospital and driven her back to Maplewood Estate. She’d also taken her to the airport to pick up Anne when she saw her car was out of gas. Although Sophie never got to eat the breakfast, she still remembered the favors.
Just as she was about to leave, Alaric Blackwood yanked her back.
"Do you have nothing better to do?"
His tone wasn’t harsh, but it was laced with displeasure.
He gave a sharp tug, pulling her toward him. He wrapped an arm around her waist and forcefully settled her onto his lap.
