Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Wedding Night, A Mutual Breach of Contract
With the first nut, Sophie Shaw precisely found Alaric Blackwood’s lips.
It was a tiny sunflower seed kernel.
She carefully held one end between her lips and fed it to Alaric.
The kernel was so tiny, their lips inevitably touched.
To end this absurd, public spectacle of a game as quickly as possible, Sophie Shaw wasted no time with the remaining nine nuts. She found each one and fed them into Alaric Blackwood’s mouth, one by one.
By the time she had found all ten nuts, a thin sheen of sweat covered her back.
It was exhausting.
Her nerves were stretched taut; it was more tiring than a full day at work.
"All right, the newlyweds must be tired after the wedding. That’s enough games for tonight. As long as everyone had fun, that’s what matters." A gentle female voice spoke up from behind the crowd of young men.
It was Mandy Halloway, carrying two glasses of wine.
The young men sensibly made way for her, greeting her politely as "Mrs. Blackwood."
She nodded with a smile, carrying the wine for their toast over to her son and daughter-in-law.
Sophie Shaw raised a hand and pulled off her red blindfold. Seeing Mandy Halloway bring the wine, she could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
’After the toast, these guys hazing us will probably leave.’
She straightened up and stood tall. Alaric Blackwood rose from the bed as well.
"A toast for your wedding night. May you be forever united in heart and enjoy a sweet, long life together."
Mandy Halloway personally presented them with the wine.
Sophie Shaw reached out for a glass, linked arms with Alaric Blackwood, and drank the wine.
"All right, everyone, time to clear out. Go on home if you’re leaving. If not, go downstairs and play cards with Mr. Blackwood."
Mandy Halloway herded everyone out of the room.
The young men felt the fun was ending too soon, but they didn’t dare defy Mrs. Blackwood.
Once the wedding partiers had all left, Mandy Halloway embraced Alaric Blackwood. As she patted her son on the back, she stealthily lifted his phone.
"You’re a married man now. Treat your wife well."
"I know."
After hugging her son, Mandy Halloway pulled the same move on her daughter-in-law.
Sophie Shaw still hadn’t fully recovered from the boisterous game. Her face was flushed red as Mandy Halloway pulled her into a tight hug, leaving her feeling dazed.
She was completely unaware that her phone had been taken.
"You must be exhausted. Get some rest. I promise no one else will bother you."
Mandy Halloway backed away, her hands behind her, clutching both of their phones. A mysterious smile played on her lips. When she reached the doorway, she freed one hand and gently shut the door.
Alaric Blackwood thought nothing of it at first. But then came a soft CLICK—the sound of the door being locked from the outside. He paused, a thoughtful expression on his face. He realized his mother’s actions—bringing the wine, secretly taking his and Sophie Shaw’s phones—were not so simple.
"She probably put something strong in that wine." ƒгeewёbnovel.com
He knew his own mother, after all.
Sophie Shaw froze at his words. As the realization dawned, her first instinct was to reach for her phone.
However, her pocket was empty.
"Don’t bother. My mom already took them." ƒгeewёbnovel.com
Alaric Blackwood was perfectly calm.
The man sat down on the edge of the bed, looking at her thoughtfully.
In contrast to his nonchalance, Sophie Shaw was panicking. "Are you sure she put something in the wine?"
"I’m not certain, but it’s highly likely."
"Then... then what do we do?"
"We can either climb out the window for help, tough it out until the effects wear off, or... let nature take its course."
Sophie Shaw’s eyes widened. Remembering the click of the lock, she understood why he’d suggested climbing out the window. ’But "let nature take its course"? What the hell does that mean?’
"We have an agreement."
’I’ve already indulged his ’preferences’—letting him kiss me, touch me, hold me. It can’t go any further than this. Otherwise, wouldn’t our contract be nothing more than a piece of scrap paper?’
"Mr. Blackwood, we need to honor our contract."
He leaned back, lounging against the headboard with a devil-may-care air. "I always honor my contracts."
"Then what are you waiting for? Go climb out the window."
"Why don’t you do it?"
"I... Fine, I’ll do it."
Sophie Shaw walked to the window. With a sharp SWISH, she yanked the curtains open, only to find the window wouldn’t budge. It was locked.
"This..."
Anxiously, she pressed her face to the glass and looked down. The courtyard below was illuminated, with several cars parked, but there wasn’t a single person in sight.
She watched from the window for a while longer but didn’t see so much as a shadow.
"What do we do? Mr. Blackwood, hurry up and think of something."
She turned to look at Alaric Blackwood, who was relaxing on the bed. "Don’t just lie there, get up!"
"I’m a little tired."
Alaric Blackwood was telling the truth. He’d been on the go nonstop since the moment he woke up. Now that things had finally quieted down, he could get some rest.
He didn’t feel like moving. He just lounged there, his deep, dark eyes fixed on Sophie Shaw’s frantic expression.
The two stared at each other, locked in a stalemate.
After some time, Sophie Shaw began to feel a strange discomfort in her body...
Alaric Blackwood’s breathing grew heavy. He was feeling the same unease.
"A cold shower might help."
The words had barely left his mouth when Sophie Shaw, without a second thought, bolted into the bathroom.
Soon, the sound of rushing water came from inside.
The corner of his mouth twitched into a smile. ’I can’t believe she’s actually taking a cold shower.’
Suddenly, a loud THUD echoed from the bathroom.
It sounded like someone had fallen.
Alaric Blackwood immediately got up and walked to the bathroom door. He knocked first. "Are you okay?"
There was no response.
A knot of anxiety tightened in his chest as he twisted the doorknob.
It wasn’t locked.
He threw the door open. The first thing he saw was Sophie Shaw, curled up on the floor. The shower was still on, drenching her body.
She was still wearing her traditional wedding gown, now soaked through. She had slipped and fallen, and between the fall and the potent effects of the drug, she had no strength to get up. Her body was limp, her consciousness already fading.
Alaric Blackwood had more self-control. His eyes swept over her quickly before he strode forward, shut off the water, and lifted her into his arms without a word.
The moment she made contact with his warm body, her breath caught. Her hands gripped his shoulders as she pressed her cheek to his and planted a kiss on his face.
"Are you sure you want to do this?"
’I’ve been holding back this whole time, and it’s been hell.’
"If you keep coming on to me like this, I won’t be able to control myself."
But Sophie Shaw was long past the point of reason. Her kisses trailed down his jaw to his neck...
’This is torture.’
Alaric Blackwood sucked in a sharp breath. He carried her out of the bathroom and set her down on the wooden chair by the desk. He tried to peel off her wet clothes, but her slender arms immediately wound around his neck again.
He caught her flailing hands in one of his, using his other to grip her chin. Raw desire blazed in his deep eyes. "Sophie Shaw, I’m asking you one last time. Are you sure this is what you want?"
"I’m sure... Help me... Mr. Blackwood..."
At her soft, pleading whisper, Alaric Blackwood’s eyes turned bloodshot.
He wanted to remain calm and rational, but he couldn’t hold back any longer.
He quickly stripped Sophie Shaw bare, then swept her up and tossed her onto the wedding bed...
Hours later.
Sophie Shaw lay sprawled on the bed, slick with sweat as if she’d just been pulled from the water.
She was utterly exhausted, her voice raw and hoarse. Her long lashes fluttered as she gazed at the drowsy man beside her, her own eyelids growing impossibly heavy.
